The Palestinian Authority (PA) has recalled its envoys to Romania, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria after their ambassadors attended an Israeli reception marking the US embassy’s move to Jerusalem, it said Wednesday.

The statement from the PA’s foreign ministry said the EU nations’ ambassadors had attended the reception the day before the US opened its Israel embassy in Jerusalem on Monday.

The statement said that the PA considered the envoys’ participation in the reception “a gross violation of international law and several United Nations resolutions that confirmed that Jerusalem is occupied territory since 1967 and forbid countries from moving their embassies to this city.”

“The recalls are to consult with our ambassadors to these states about their positions and their commitment to the EU’s positions.”

Austria, Czech Republic, Romania, and Hungary broke with European consensus in accepting invitations to the Sunday reception, which most EU ambassadors declined in keeping with its official opposition to the embassy move.

The European Union opposed the US move of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

“We highly appreciate the commitment of most [EU] member states to international law and UN resolutions related to the Palestinian cause,” the PA statement said.

The embassy move and Washington’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has deeply angered Palestinians, who see the Arab-majority eastern sector of the city as the capital of their future state.

Only a day earlier PA President Abbas ordered the top Palestinian representative in Washington to return home.

Husam Zomlot, the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) envoy in Washington DC, was expected to arrive back in Ramallah on Wednesday.

Zomlot was also recalled in December after US President Donald Trump’s announcement of his to decision to relocate the US embassy to the disputed city, which he also recognized as Israel’s capital.

The Palestinian leadership has effectively refused to speak to Trump’s team since the move was announced, including his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who is supposed to be spearheading a new drive for peace.

Zomlot himself has described the embassy move as another step toward “a full-fledged apartheid.”

Asked for confirmation and comment on the Palestinian announcement, a State Department spokesperson referred i24NEWS to the PLO office.

Salem)" />

Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah survived an apparent assassination attempt on Tuesday after a roadside bomb went off near his 20-vehicle convoy, shortly after entering the Gaza strip.

Hamdallah, who is a member of the internationally-backed Palestinian Authority (PA) in the West Bank, continued his trip into Gaza following the blast to give a speech at the opening ceremony of a waste treatment plant.

Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which left three vehicles damaged and six security guards injured.

Hamdallah immediately returned to the West Bank after delivering the speech, vowing to continue reconciliation efforts with rival Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza.

“This will not deter from seeking to end the bitter split. We will still come to Gaza,” he said.

Responsibility unclear

PA President Mahmud Abbas said he held Hamas responsible for the attack. But his security chief, Majed Farraj, said it was too early to say whether Hamas had been involved.

Hamas, which condemned the attack, said it considered the attack as an attempt to block a Palestinian unity agreement drawn up in October. Hamas security forces said they launched an investigation into the attack.

Gaza, which is separated from the West Bank by Israeli territory, has been controlled Hamas since the militant group ousted the PA in 2007. Several other militant groups also operate in Gaza.

Hamas’ troubles

Hamas has fought three wars with Israel and Gaza has suffered from a devastating Israeli and Egyptian blockade.

Egyptian-backed reconciliation talks between Hamas and the PA have stuttered since Hamas handed over control of Gaza’s border crossings to the PA in November.

Hamas’ police force and armed wing, which the US and the European Union consider a terrorist organization, continues to have full control of the rest of Gaza. Hamas has refused to disband its miltary wing and hand over security to the PA as part of a reconciliation deal.

White House meeting on Gaza

The US is set to discuss the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza during a White House meeting later on Tuesday.

It is unclear whether PA representatives will attend the meeting, since the PA has boycotted US officials in response to the US’ recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital city in early December.
