]]> Mali is experiencing a major escalation in violence, with jihadist groups advancing and the defense minister assassinated. The crisis threatens to destabilize the Sahel region.
Mali has seen an unprecedented advance by armed groups in recent days, and among the groups involved are Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), considered a jihadist organization, and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), seen as a group seeking an independent region or state for the Tuareg people.

The groups have attacked cities in northern Mali, and the country has faced massive setbacks as its officials have been killed and Russian mercenaries have fled.

]]> BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — The president of Mali’s transitional government signed a decree Tuesday dissolving political parties amid a backdrop of pro-democracy opposition, a minister in the government announced.

The decision by Gen. Assimi Goita comes amid a surge in kidnappings of pro-democracy activists in the capital Bamako and just days after a demonstration by several hundred pro-democracy activists.

“Political parties and organizations of a political nature are dissolved throughout the national territory,” announced Mamani Nassire, the minister delegate to the prime minister in charge of political reforms and support for the electoral process.

Nassire was reading from a decree signed by Goita on national TV. The decree was announced after an extraordinary council of ministers meeting Tuesday.

The decree reads: “It is forbidden for members of dissolved political parties and political organizations to hold any meetings.”

]]> (Bloomberg) — Mali’s military junta started executing an interim order to seize gold at a mine run by Barrick Gold Corp., escalating a dispute over the West African government’s share of revenues from the project.

The authorities started executing the order on Jan. 11 against gold stockpiled at the Loulo-Gounkoto operations, according to a Barrick memo seen by Bloomberg. The order was issued a week ago, according to the Canadian miner.

The world’s No. 2 gold producer is locked in a dispute with the Malian government that centers on the distribution of revenue from the vast Loulo-Gounkoto complex. Shipments from the mine have been blocked since November, the memo said.

]]> West African bloc ECOWAS on Wednesday strongly condemned jihadist attacks which a day earlier hit the Malian capital where locals voiced concern and questions remained about the rare and deadly strike.

An Al-Qaeda-linked group on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the attack in Bamako against highly sensitive targets, including a military police training centre and the military airport.

The operation was the first of its kind in years and was a forceful blow to the ruling junta, experts say.

The Malian capital is normally spared the sort of attacks that occur almost daily in some parts of the West African country.

]]> BAMAKO, Sept 16 (Reuters) – Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, three West African Sahel nations ruled by military juntas, signed a security pact on Saturday promising to come to the aid of each other in case of any rebellion or external aggression.

The three countries are struggling to contain Islamic insurgents linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State and have also seen their relations with neighbours and international partners strained because of the coups.

The latest coup in Niger drove a further wedge between the three and countries of the regional bloc, the Economic Community of West African States, which has threatened to use force to restore constitutional rule in the country.

Mali and Burkina Faso have vowed to come to Niger’s aid if it is attacked.

“Any attack on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of one or more contracted parties will be considered an aggression against the other parties,” according to the charter of the pact, known as the Alliance of Sahel States.
