]]> After the news that Europe’s largest car producer VW may close two plants, experts are sounding the alarm that the downsizing of manufacturing isn’t just limited to the car industry. The German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) says companies need to evolve.

As EU car companies struggle with the phasing out of combustion engines and a transition to electric vehicles before 2035, experts are predicting that thousands more jobs may be cut across different sectors over the next couple of years.

DIW President, Marcel Fratzscher, says that the German economy is both export and industry dependent, and in the face of the energy transition, “companies have missed out on the transformation,” and that many, such as VW, have “fallen behind”.

“It’s not just the automotive sector, it’s machinery, it’s the pharmaceutical, the chemical sector, this is quite a problem many have,” he told Euronews.

]]> The German chancellor is set for a balancing act during his talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, as Berlin weighs economic interests against geopolitical concerns.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz leaves for China on Saturday for a three-day diplomatic visit that includes meetings with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Accompanied by a high-level business delegation, the German leader is expected to address grievances over the trade deficit between the EU common market and the world’s second-largest economy.

Scholz is also expected to question China’s ties with Russia amid the Ukraine war and Beijing’s aggressiveness toward Taiwan — a self-ruled island China claims as its own.

Scholz is scheduled to meet Xi and Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing on Tuesday, the last day of his trip. This is Scholz’s second trip to China as chancellor — he completed his first visit in November 2022.

]]> US chip giant can no longer commit to starting construction by mid-2023, Volksstimme reports.

U.S. tech giant Intel is backing away from plans to start construction in the first half of 2023 on a “mega-fab” semiconductor plant in Germany, according to media outlet Volksstimme.

Intel earlier this year committed an initial investment of €17 billion into the facility in the German city of Magdeburg. The planned investment, announced in March, could grow to more than three times that amount, according to the company.

The company had said construction was expected to begin in the first half of next year, with production planned to come online in 2027.
