]]> BEIJING (AP) — As Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrives in China on Wednesday, his hosts see an opportunity to peel the longtime U.S. ally away from their rival, at least a bit.

China’s state media is calling on the Canadian government to set a foreign policy path independent of the United States — what it calls “strategic autonomy.”

Canada has long been one of America’s closest allies, geographically and otherwise. But Beijing is hoping that President Donald Trump’s economic aggression — and, now, military action — against other countries will erode that longstanding relationship.

]]> Canada has abruptly scrapped its plan to enforce a new digital service tax on American tech firms — days after President Trump blasted the “foolish” move as a “direct and blatant attack” on the United States.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney caved just hours before the new levy was slated to go into effect on Monday, as the country scrambles to revive stalled trade negotiations ahead of a looming July 21 deadline.

A fuming Trump had nixed the talks Friday after Canada said it was sticking with its plan to slap companies — including Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber and Airbnb — with a 3% levy on revenue from Canadian users.

]]> TORONTO (AP) — Former central banker Mark Carney will become Canada’s next prime minister after a Liberal Party leadership vote in a landslide.

Carney is 59. He was born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, on March 16, 1965, and raised in Edmonton, Alberta.

Credentials

Carney ran the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. After helping Canada manage the worst impacts of the 2008 financial crisis, he was recruited to become the first non-Brit to run the Bank of England since it was founded in 1694.

In 2020, he began serving as the United Nations’ special envoy for climate action and finance.

Carney is a former Goldman Sachs executive. He worked for 13 years in London, Tokyo, New York and Toronto, before being appointed deputy governor of the Bank of Canada in 2003. He has no experience in politics.
