Poland’s national-populist leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski accused Germany of trying to turn the European Union into a federalist “Fourth German Reich” in an interview published Friday.

There are countries that “are not enthusiastic about the prospect of building a German Fourth Reich on the basis of the EU,” the Law and Justice (PiS) party president told Polish far-right daily GPC.

According to Kaczynski, who is also Poland’s deputy prime minister in charge of national security, the term “Fourth German Reich” “has nothing negative about it, as it is not the Third Reich but the First”, i.e. the Holy Roman Empire.

During the recent visit of the new German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Poland, his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki described the German coalition government’s support for greater federalism in the European Union as “utopian and therefore dangerous” and reiterated that his government backed the concept of “a Europe of sovereign nations”.

Kaczynski, who is generally considered to be the “mastermind” of any significant change in Poland, added in the interview that “if we Poles agreed to such a modern submission we would be degraded in many ways”.

And he attacked the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU), which he said was “the basic instrument used” to impose federalist ideas.

The CJEU, he said, can interpret European law and draw conclusions he deemed illegitimate. “And it does,” he argued.

Brussels has been engaged in a drawn-out battle with Warsaw, notably over the judicial reforms launched by the PiS government since 2015.

These reforms, accused of undermining the independence of judges, have earned Poland several condemnations by the CJEU.

Under the influence of national-populists, the Polish Constitutional Court challenged the authority of the EU Court of Justice in June, and in October questioned the primacy of European law over Polish law.

On Wednesday, Brussels launched an infringement procedure against Poland following these rulings by the Constitutional Court, pointing out that the court “no longer meets the requirements of an independent and impartial court established by law, as required by the Treaty”.

Summary:

Pope’s second visit to refugees on Lesbos
Pope again condemns politicians who exploit migration crisis
Global migration crisis cannot be ignored, pope says

LESBOS, Greece, Dec 5 (Reuters) – Pope Francis condemned the exploitation of migrants for political purposes on Sunday during a visit to the Greek island of Lesbos, branding the global indifference to their plight the “shipwreck of civilization”.

Francis walked through the Mavrovouni camp, which holds about 2,300 people, stopping to greet dozens of refugees and giving a high five to a young African boy.

He first visited the island, one of the main entry points for migrants, in 2016 and took 12 Syrian refugees back to Italy with him. He lamented that “little has changed” since then.

The Mediterranean, where thousands have died trying to make the crossing from north Africa to Europe, was still “a grim cemetery without tombstones”.

“Please, let us stop this shipwreck of civilization!” he said.

Francis for the second straight day chided those who use the migration crisis for political ends.

“It is easy to stir up public opinion by instilling fear of others,” he said, adding that people who are anti-immigrant “fail to speak with equal vehemence” about the exploitation of the poor, wars, and the arms industry.

“The remote causes should be attacked, not the poor people who pay the consequences and are even used for political propaganda,” he said.

The camp, set up in a old army firing range, is made up of dozens of prefabricated structures, some similar to shipping containers and other, smaller ones made of plastic.

The spaces between the structures are like streets of a bleak village where people live in limbo. Baby carriages and children’s tricycles leaned on the home of one Afghan couple.

Sitting on a chair under a tent with the sea behind him, the pope listened to Christian Tango Mukaya, a 30-year-old refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo who has been at the camp with two of his children for a year. He has not had contact with his wife and another child since he arrived.

Mavrovouni, whose perimeter is surrounded by cement, barbed wire and the sea, replaced the notorious Moria camp that burned down last year.

The pope visited several families there at the end of his morning visit.

Departing from his prepared address, Francis said it was “distressing” to hear that some European leaders wanted to use common funds to build a wall and put up barbed wire to keep immigrants out. read more

“We are in the era of walls and barbed wire,” he said.

Poland’s prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki has called for the EU to jointly finance a border wall to stem the tide of migrants coming from the Middle East through Belarus into Poland.

As grim and bleak as Mavrovouni is, it is a marked improvement over Moria, which human rights groups decried for its squalid and overcrowded conditions.

Greece has long been the main entry point into the European Union for migrants and refugees fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Asia and Africa. Hundreds of thousands of people arrived on Lesbos’s beaches in 2015 after crossing on boats from Turkey.

Joshue, an 18-year-old refugee from Congo, was among those who welcomed the pope’s visit.

“It’s not like hearing it from afar, he came to the field to see how we live, to see how things happen here, so it gives us hope and strength knowing that such a leader is thinking about us,” he said.

“Of course it’s not going to be punishable, not going to be seen as criminal, to say that there were Polish perpetrators, as there were Jewish perpetrators, as there were Russian perpetrators, as there were Ukrainian, not only German perpetrators,” he said.

Mr. Netanyahu swiftly replied, calling the comments “outrageous.”

“There is a problem here of an inability to understand history and a lack of sensitivity to the tragedy of our people,” he said, adding, “I intend to speak with him forthwith.”

Later on Sunday, Mr. Netanyahu spoke by phone with Mr. Morawiecki and told him that this previous remarks were unacceptable and that there was no basis for comparing the actions of Poles during the Holocaust to those of Jews, according to the Israeli prime minister’s media adviser.

Mr. Netanyahu pointed out that the goal of the Holocaust was to destroy the Jewish people and that all Jews were under sentence of death, the official said. He also told his Polish counterpart that the distortion regarding Poland could not be corrected by means of another distortion. The two agreed that the countries would continue their dialogue on the matter.
