]]> CHISINAU, Sept 29 (Reuters) – Moldova’s pro-European ruling party won a resounding victory over its Russian-leaning rival in a key parliamentary election, results on Monday showed, in a major boost for the country’s bid to join the European Union and break away from Moscow’s orbit.

The surprisingly strong performance on Sunday by President Maia Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) against the Patriotic Bloc was a relief for the government and its EU partners, who accused Moscow of seeking to influence the vote.

]]> Moldova’s pro-EU President Maia Sandu has claimed a second term after a tense election run-off seen as a choice between Europe and Russia.

The Moldovan Central Electoral Commission confirmed Sandu’s victory on Monday morning.

Sandu won 55% of the vote, according to preliminary results, and in a late-night speech on Sunday she promised to be president for all Moldovans.

Her rival Alexandr Stoianoglo, who was backed by the pro-Russian Party of Socialists, had called for a closer relationship with Moscow.

During the day the president’s national security adviser said there had been “massive interference” from Russia in Moldova’s electoral process that had “high potential to distort the outcome”.

Their meeting in the French capital will take place after pro-Russian officials in Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria last week appealed to Russia for “protection”. There is mounting concern that the territory could become a new flashpoint in Moscow’s two-year war against Ukraine.

In response to the spike in applications for Moldovan citizenship, the country’s immigration agency has asked the government to extend the processing time from the current 20 days to six months. Officials attribute Russia’s war against Ukraine as the primary factor driving the increase.

According to Moldova’s immigration agency, roughly 70% of applicants are Russian citizens, while 20% are Ukrainians. However, they did not disclose specific numbers.

]]> Moldova’s Foreign Ministry said the decision was taken following “ongoing tensions and unfriendly actions,” and that embassy staff and diplomats would have to leave by 15 August.

Several diplomats from the Russian embassy in the Republic of Moldova left the country on a charter plane on Monday morning, after being expelled in the wake of what Moldovan authorities called “unfriendly actions”.

The flight was scheduled to take off at 9:00 am (local time) with approximately 100 people on board. Among them were diplomats and technical staff from the Russian embassy, as well as their family members.

They were taken to the airport in two buses, while others seem to have left in their cars and other chartered means.
