Several residential buildings were reportedly hit and all of the Russian capital’s airports shut down as a result of the attack.

Ukrainian drones struck several targets around Moscow on Wednesday night, setting an oil refinery on fire and forcing the Russian capital’s airports to suspend flights.

Both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the attacks. Photos and videos circulating on social media and news agencies showed the refinery on fire, with thick black smoke rising above the site.

“Last night, our long-range sanctions once again reached the Moscow region — for the second time this week, the Moscow oil refinery was hit,” Zelenskyy wrote on X on Thursday morning.

Moscow Car Blast Kills Russian General

The Russian General Staff head of training was reported “murdered” by Moscow investigators, after an explosive device planted under his car exploded; they say Kyiv’s special forces may be “linked.”

A senior Russian general was killed in southern Moscow on Monday after an explosive device placed under his car went off, investigators said in a statement.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, which examines major crimes, said it had opened a probe into the “murder” of Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, head of the training department within the General Staff.

The possibility that the attack was “linked” to “Ukrainian special forces” was among the lines of inquiry, it said.

The Kremlin has declined to comment on growing evidence that the Afghan branch of Islamic State (IS), known as Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), masterminded the terrorist attack on the Crocus City concert hall in Moscow that left 137 people dead.

Asked by reporters whether the Kremlin recognised IS was behind the attack, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said: “You ask a question related to the progress of the investigation. We do not comment on that in any way. We have no right to do so. But we urge you to rely on the information provided by our law enforcement agencies.”

Reporters also asked why Vladimir Putin and Russian authorities did not mention IS as a possible organiser of the attack.

“The investigation continues. No solid theory has been announced just yet. This is only a matter of preliminary information,” Peskov said.

Russia says Ukraine has launched “a terrorist drone attack” on Moscow, with several buildings damaged.

It is the first time Moscow has been so heavily targeted in a single operation, but Ukraine denies carrying out the strikes.

What was hit by the drones?

The Russian military says eight drones were used in the strikes.

It says five were shot down and three stopped with signal jamming technology – causing them to lose control and miss their targets.

By piecing together visual clues in video footage – such as building exteriors and parks – BBC Verify has confirmed the location of three drone strikes in south-west Moscow:

A residential building hit on the outskirts of Moscow
A high-rise apartment block, where a drone reportedly flew into an apartment on the 13th floor
Another high-rise building, reportedly hit earlier this morning

Moscow possibly on track for coldest August on record

The first week of August in Moscow was cold, with an average air temperature of only 13°C. That is 5 degrees below the norm and corresponds more to the last days of the month.

How does that compare with other Augusts in Moscow?

The coldest August on record, with an average daily air temperature of 12°C, and an anomaly of -4 degrees, was back in 1884. That August turned out to be colder than May, and in the second half of the month the maximum air temperature did not exceed 19°C.

Putting that more clearly, this August so far is running 5 degrees below normal, while the coldest August on record, back in 1884, ran only 4 degrees below normal.

The beginning of August in Moscow has been characterized by unusual weather in terms not only of cold, but also of rainfall and sunshine. Precipitation has already almost fulfilled the norm for the entire month.

The most abundant August rains came in 2016, with rainfall of 167.1 mm (217% of the norm). For the month, 19 days saw rainfalls of various intensity. August 15, 2016 saw 88 mm of rainfall in one day.

As to sunlight, the year 2001 was marked by the least sunlight in the current century. The sun appeared in the sky for only 181 hours, while the norm is 238 hours.
