North Korea on Thursday released new images of what it claims is its first nuclear-powered submarine, a massive vessel equal in size to some of the United States Navy’s attack subs.

The pictures released by state media showed leader Kim Jong Un inspecting the guided-missile submarine at an indoor construction facility, indicating it has not yet been launched.

]]> April 8 (UPI) — The United States, Australia and Britain indicated Monday they will officially consider Japan’s push to be included in the AUKUS military pact between the three nations.

Japan’s possible inclusion in the “pillar” of the pact seeking to bolster defense technology collaboration to counter China’s growing naval presence in the Indo-Pacific region is now on the table, the three countries said in a joint statement.

The AUKUS strategic partnership was formed in 2021 in response to increasing Chinese military provocations in the region. “Pillar I,” the centerpiece of the pact, focuses on the acquisition of a nuclear submarine capability for Australia, while “Pillar II” seeks to spur the development of a range of advanced defense capabilities in areas such as artificial intelligence and hypersonic missiles across all three nations.

]]> North Korea launched its first “tactical nuclear attack submarine” in a ceremony attended by Kim Jong Un.

The launching of the submarine was announced in North Korean state media. The Korean Central News Agency boasted that the launching of the submarine ushered in a “new era of Juche-oriented naval force,” referring to the state ideology.

“The majestic birth of the first underwater nuclear attack ship … heralded the beginning of a new chapter for bolstering up the naval force of the DPRK and made clearer the steadfast will of the WPK and the government of the DPRK to further strengthen the state nuclear deterrence both in quality and quantity and by leaps and bounds for regional and global peace and security,” it said.
