(CNS News) — Sen. Chuck Grassley (R.-Iowa), the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, told CNSNews.com on Wednesday that U.S.-Mexico border is “absolutely not” secure.

“You can’t be a secure, sovereign nation if you have an open border,” Grassley said.

“The president of the United States ought to uphold the law, and he’s inviting violation of the law,” said Grassley.

At the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, CNS News asked the senator, “Should illegal aliens be given a pathway to citizenship?”

Senator Grassley said, “That would have to be part of a comprehensive piece of legislation. If you’re asking me just cold out as a separate issue, should they have a path to citizenship, the answer is no. But when you’re negotiating a bipartisan piece of legislation, what you call comprehensive immigration, that could be a part of it.”

“But I would say it would be a pathway that would be fairly long and you can’t have criminal activity and they have to pay all their taxes,” he said.

In a follow-up question, CNS News asked, “And is our southwestern border secure now?”

Senator Grassley said, “Oh, absolutely not. We have an open border. You can’t be a secure, sovereign nation if you have an open border. No, they, we had — we were on a path to having a secure border, when you build a fence, and the fence should have been completed.”

He continued, “And I was down there three months ago and the Border Patrol told us that they were called in to advise a transition team before Biden was president, and they were asked what to do about the border.

“The Border Patrol said, ‘Just leave things alone. If you want to bring people in the country, bring them in in an orderly way.’ And then they said they didn’t do it. So on January 20th, they just opened the border up and invited people in. That’s not right.”

“The president of the United States ought to uphold the law, and he’s inviting violation of the law,” said Senator Grassley.

Senate Democrats are pursuing a pathway to citizenship for an estimated 8 million illegal aliens, or “undocumented immigrants,” as part of a $3.5 trillion budget resolution aimed at achieving many items on President Joe Biden’s agenda. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has said they will act on the resolution before the extended August recess.

As part of the broad economic package, the Senate Judiciary Committee was charged with crafting a $120-billion bill for “making improvements on U.S. ports of entry, clearing out a backlog of visa applications, or other changes,” a Senate Democratic aide working closely on the plan told Bloomberg News. There was no mention of any funds going towards border security.

“Of the 8 million immigrants that Democrats want to aid in the economic package, 3 million would be young, undocumented immigrants known as ‘Dreamers,’ migrant workers, and some with ‘temporary protected status’ because dangerous conditions present risks, if they return to their home countries, the aide said,” according to Bloomberg News. “The other 5 million would be ‘essential workers’ who have yet to be defined.”

This immigration piece apparently is becoming increasingly crucial for the Senate Democrats to secure, as several House Democrats have said they will not support the larger economic package unless it is included.

Fox News’ Jesse Watters said as much in the wake of their reaction to President Trump’sdefense of upcoming Immigration and Custom’s Enforcement (ICE) raids.

“You have Democrats saying don’t follow the laws of our country. They want American citizens to follow the laws but they don’t want illegal aliens so at this point you have to think, do they want any enforcement? They don’t want it in the interior. They don’t want it at the border,” Watters said.

“They don’t want you to have to stay in the country that you are and apply when you get there. They don’t want you detained if you commit a crime in a sanctuary city, they don’t want to let us know about it. They don’t even want the federal government to ask you a question, are you a U.S. citizen?”

The “Watters’ World” host then outlined what he believes Democrats are “offering” illegal immigrants.

“What they do want, they want to give you an American job. They want to give you a driver’s license, in-state college tuition and they want to give you free health insurance. So at this point, the Democrats are the party of open borders and that’s just a fact,” Watters said.

Co-host Greg Gutfeld praised Trump and the logic of the immigration raids.

“Word gets out that we’re going to deport people who are there illegally disincentivizes people from coming here. It’s the opposite of waving caravans through,” Gutfeld said.

“The Greg Gutfeld Show” host said he believed Democrats were “losing” the American public over the issue of immigration.

“So these are two things that human beings understand fairness and incentives. These are two things that the Democrats can’t get into their thick skulls. And that’s why they’re losing the American public and they’re devouring themselves,” Gutfeld said.

President Trump said Friday that the US would begin dumping illegal immigrants in sanctuary cities across the US — adding that the move would make the “Radical Left … very happy!”

“We are giving strong consideration to having people after a 20-day period, because again you are not allowed legally to hold them for more than that, we’ll move them into sanctuary cities,” the president said at the White House after an unrelated tech event.

The 20-day limit, which the administration had wanted extended, was part of the so-called Flores agreement, which forces the feds to release non-criminal, non-citizens from custody after 20 days.

Trump had earlier tweeted that he was considering making a political point — a day after the White House had firmly denied it.

“Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as reported, giving strong considerations to placing Illegal Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities only,” he tweeted.

“The Radical Left always seems to have an Open Borders, Open Arms policy – so this should make them very happy!”

On Thursday, a White House official and a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security said the proposal was no longer on the table.

“This was just a suggestion that was floated and rejected, which ended any further discussion,” the White House said.

But Trump confirmed reports this week that he wanted to transport thousands of asylum seekers to sanctuary cities, to ease the crush at the border and deal Democrats a political blow.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — whose district in San Francisco was among those the White House wanted to target — slammed the plan, accusing Team Trump of using children as pawns in their effort to demonize immigrants.

Trump’s revival of the plan of drew was quickly condemned on Friday by Pelosi and other Democrats.

The No. 2 House Democrat, Steny Hoyer of Maryland, criticized the idea of using ICE, the military or any federal agency “to penalize” sanctuary cities “for political reasons.”

“That’s not the act of a democratic government,” he said.

Democrats in the Senate were just as harsh.

“The president should stop the tweeting and start leading on this issue and others,” said Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer’s top spokesman, Angelo Roefaro.

Other New York pols joined the chorus.

“President Trump has yet again proven that the only constant in his immigration policy is cruelty,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “He uses people like pawns. New York City will always be the ultimate city of immigrants – the President’s empty threats won’t change that.”

There are roughly 200 states, counties and cities that have declared themselves as sanctuaries — including New York, Newark, San Francisco, Boston and Philadelphia.

Asked during a pre-election television event with voters whether she would do things differently if faced with the same situation, Mrs Merkel said, in retrospect “I still think my decision was right”.

She added that her government had taken numerous steps to ensure the crisis is not repeated.

The influx of almost a million refugees to Germany in 2015 prompted sharp criticism of Mrs Merkel from some politicians on the right, including her conservative allies in Bavaria.

But Horst Seehofer, who leads the Bavarian sister party of Mrs Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, appeared to back away Sunday from his long-standing call for a cap on refugees.

Mr Seehofer previously demanded an upper limit of 200,000 refugees per year.

“The situation has changed, Berlin has changed course,” Mr Seehofer told public broadcaster ARD.

“We now have significantly less immigration than at the time when I made those comments.”

He was responding to a question about whether his Christian Social Union party would sign a new governing coalition agreement with Mrs Merkel’s party without a firm assurance that there would be a maximum number of refugees allowed in Germany.

Mrs Merkel has rejected such a cap.

Mr Seehofer said he would aim to ensure the measures already taken to reduce refugee arrivals are protected by a future government after the September 24 election.

Mrs Merkel told private German broadcaster RTL on Sunday that she would run for a full four-year term if she is re-elected next month.

Asked whether she would stand for election again in 2021, the 63-year-old chancellor said: “That will be discussed again at the appropriate time.”

She repeatedly used the same phrase before committing herself to run in this year’s election.
