A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 has struck the Flores Sea in southern Indonesia, causing damage and prompting people to flee to higher ground in fear of a tsunami, officials say. The tsunami warnings have since been canceled.

The earthquake, which struck at 11:20 a.m. local time on Tuesday, was centered in the Flores Sea, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Maumere, one of the largest towns on Flores Island, which is west of Timor-Leste (East Timor).

Indonesia’s seismological agency BMKG put the preliminary magnitude for Tuesday’s quake at 7.4. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), however, put the magnitude at 7.3, down from an earlier reading of 7.6. Both said the earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 12 to 18 kilometers (7 to 11 miles).

Tsunami warnings were immediately issued for nearby coastlines, prompting scores of people to flee to higher ground. The warnings were later downgraded to tsunami advisories, which were canceled at 1:25 p.m. after only small tsunami waves had been recorded.

The USGS estimates that up to 21 million people could have felt Tuesday’s earthquake, of which 347,000 people may have felt “moderate” shaking and “strong” shaking for about 2,000 people. Homes were reportedly damaged on Selayar Island, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Indonesia is on the so-called ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin that is prone to frequent and large earthquakes.

A 9.1-magnitude earthquake, one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded, struck off the west coast of Sumatra in December 2004, causing a massive tsunami that struck countries across the Pacific Ocean. At least 227,898 people were killed.

(Reuters) – A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck near the coast of Northern Chile on Tuesday, the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences said, and some damage and minor landslides were reported in areas near the epicenter, according to local media.

A number of people living near the coast were evacuated as a precaution, according to BNO News. There were no reports of casualties.

GFZ reported aftershocks of around magnitudes 6.2 and 5.5.

There was no tsunami threat from the earthquake, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

GFZ earlier showed the magnitude as 7, with the quake at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

Chile is on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin which is prone to frequent earthquakes.

In June, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Chile´s mineral-rich northern desert. Damage in that quake was minimal and mining companies in the region had told Reuters their operations had not been affected.

Mine facilities and other infrastructure in Chile are built to withstand extraordinarily large quakes.

A mass evacuation is underway in the Philippines, where an erupting volcano 65km south of the capital has triggered some 75 earthquakes and on Monday spewed lava and “ballistic fragments”, forcing the nation’s financial markets to suspend trading and Manila airport to close.

A “hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days”, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said on Monday. Thousands of people have been evacuated since late Sunday, with plans to move as many as 200,000 people. Officials ordered schools and government offices shut, and advised private businesses to do the same. However, some residents refused to leave their homes and farms, officials said.

“We have a problem, our people are panicking due to the volcano because they want to save their livelihood, their pigs and herds of cows,” Mayor Wilson Maralit of Balete said. “We’re trying to stop them from returning and warning that the volcano can explode again anytime and hit them.”

Maralit, whose town lies along the coastline of Taal Lake surrounding the erupting volcano, appealed for troops and additional police to be deployed to stop distraught residents from sneaking back to their high-risk coastal villages.

“You could not sleep anymore, because every time you closed your eyes the house would shake,” restaurant owner Lia Monteverde said, recalling quakes striking minutes apart.“All of us didn’t sleep at all. We just prepared to leave.”

Weak lava fountaining, accompanied by thunder and flashes of lightning, indicated intense activity at the main crater of the Taal Volcano, the volcanology agency said. Dozens of towns and urban areas all the way to Metro Manila, including the main business district of Makati City, are enduring ashfall and volcanic particles up to 2.5 inches in diameter.

“It’s been endless evacuation since last night,” said Lita Laverinto, an operations officer with the Office of Civil Defence in Calabarzon. “We need masks; our volunteers and respondents who are directing rescues and evacuation really need them.”

Manila’s international airport, the country’s main gateway, remains closed until the airspace and runways are clear of volcanic debris, authorities said in a statement.

About 200 flights were canceled, affecting about 60,000 passengers, according to a statement from Cebu Air and Philippine Airlines. The airport may resume partial operations on Monday, it’s General Manager Ed Monreal told local radio DZMM.

Bank of the Philippine Islands, the nation’s oldest lender, suspended operations in “badly affected areas”, mostly in Batangas and Cavite, and allowed some staff in less affected areas to work remotely, according to Owen Cammayo, vice-president of corporate communications. The bank will decide later today if it will close early, he said.

More than 20,000 residents from 14 towns have been moved to some 73 evacuation centers in the provinces of Batangas and Cavite, as of 6 am on Monday. Hundreds of thousands more may need to be evacuated if eruptions in the main crater cause surrounding craters to explode.

“I’m afraid that it might erupt… but I’ll leave it to fate. I just have to pray,” said Eduardo Carino, who works in a hotel near the volcano.

Taal is considered the second-most active volcano in the Philippines. Located in the middle of a lake less than 10km inland of Balayan Bay on the island of Luzon, Taal volcano has some 30 active craters, according to Batangas province Vice Governor Mark Leviste.

“Right now, we are witnessing a vertical eruption, and thanks to God we are just experiencing ashfall,” Leviste told DZBB radio Sunday. “But if this turns into a horizontal explosion, this could affect the mainland.”

A change of wind direction means ash is blowing over municipalities not included in earlier emergency plans, swelling the number of communities affected.

“Our problem is access to affected areas,” said Jovener Dupilas, an information officer with the Office of Civil Defence. “The ash fall is so thick and heavy that visibility is poor and some trees even fell.”

In metropolitan Manila, traffic is lighter than usual, indicating that while many private companies haven’t suspended work, many employees have stayed home anyway.

The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Battered by about 20 typhoons annually, the country also sits on the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, exposing it to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Between 2000 and 2016, natural disasters in the Philippines caused more than 23,000 deaths and affected 125 million people, according to the Asian Development Bank. The socioeconomic damage was about US$20 billion with average annual damage estimated at US$1.2 billion, it said.

JAKARTA (AFP) – A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the Indonesian coast early on Monday (Jan 7), sending residents running out of their homes, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake hit at a depth of 60km under the Molucca Sea, some 175km north-north-west of the city of Ternate, according to the United States Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties and Indonesia’s geophysics agency did not issue a tsunami alert.

“We felt the quake and some people got out of their house but there was no real panic. There is no damage in my area,” said a man from Ternate called Budi, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

Mr Bani Nasution, who was in the city of Manado when the quake struck, told AFP: “I ran out of my house and so did other people here, but we’ve all returned to our houses now.” A series of aftershocks also rocked the area.

Indonesia is still reeling from a deadly tsunami at the end of December triggered by an erupting volcano in the middle of the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra islands that killed more than 400 people.

The vast South-east Asian archipelago is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth due to its position straddling the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide.

The tsunami was Indonesia’s third major natural disaster in six months, following a series of powerful earthquakes on the island of Lombok in July and August and a quake-tsunami in September that killed around 2,200 people in Palu on Sulawesi island, with thousands more missing and presumed dead.

EARTHQUAKES are not an uncommon occurrence in areas of seismic activity – 34 have been reported today alone. Here is the latest news.

The biggest quake to strike today was a magnitude 5.0, in Kainantu, Papua New Guinea, neighbouring the island archipelago Indonesia which is still reeling from a devastating earthquake in August.

Today’s quake struck deep below the Earth’s surface, some 80 miles deep, meaning the impact to the surface was minimal.

Indonesia itself saw a quake near Abepura, registering at 4.6, which was too deep to wreak havoc.

Japan, which has seen a spate of deadly natural events this year, has had two quakes today, the biggest registering at 4.4, east of Tomakomai.

Stateside, Alaska has seen a total of eight tremors today, though none of them big enough to cause any damage, the strongest registering at 3.3 just near Tok.

Earthquake-prone California has seen two in the past 24 hours, but again only small ones, with the biggest only 2.8 near Pinnacles.

So what do all these areas have in common?

These areas all form part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a massive horseshoe shape of seismic activity encircling the Pacific Basin.

What is the Ring of Fire?

About 90 percent of all earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire, which is dotted with 75 percent of all the active volcanoes on earth.

A string of 452 volcanoes stretches from the southern tip of South America, up the West Coast of the Americas, across the Bering Strait, down through Japan and into New Zealand.

In total, the ring forms a 25,000 mile arc from the boundary of the Pacific Plate, to the Cocos and Nazca Plates that line the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

The ring is the result of tectonic plates – huge slabs of the earth’s crust which fit together like a puzzle to make up the earth’s surface.

The plates are not fixed, but constantly moving on top of a layer of solid and molten (liquid) rock, called the earth’s mantle.

Sometimes, these plates collide, move apart, or slide against each other, which results in an earthquake.

The volcanoes form when one plate is pushed under another into the mantle (through a process known as subduction), releasing pressure and causing the molten rock to push up through the earth.

The Ring of Fire is a result of the earth’s oceanic plates and continental plates interacting, which has led to the massive activity which is associated with the area.

What is the ‘Big One’?

Around times of increased seismic activity, talk of the ‘Big One’ often increases.

The Big One, according to the hypothesis, will occur along the San Andreas Fault, a 750-mile-long tectonic boundary through California.

A study published in 2006 in the journal Nature found the San Andreas fault has reached a sufficient stress level for an earthquake of magnitude greater than 7.0 to occur.

The paper concluded: “The information available suggests that the fault is ready for the next big earthquake but exactly when the triggering will happen and when the earthquake will occur we cannot tell.

“It could be tomorrow or it could be 10 years or more from now.”

Papua New Guinea has deployed armed forces to help emergency evacuations, after the Maman Island volcano erupted on Saturday.

The massive eruption sent a plume of ash nine miles into the sky, blocking out the sun for several hours and triggering panic among villagers.

Around 2,000 villagers from three seperate villages have fled so far from the flowing lava and blanket of ash.

Manam Island, just six miles wide, is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and sits along the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire.

Steve Saunders, from the Rabaul Volcano Observatory (RVO), said: “The most affected areas are Baliau and Kuluguma and due to the very poor visibility caused by the ash fall, people are using torch light to move around.”

He added that the eruption was “unusually large” and warned that a new vent had opened, indicating more activity was likely to come.

The ash has been so heavy that trees have snapped under its weight and at least two houses have collapsed.

Peter Sukua, a local leader from Baliau village, said villagers were in a state of shock.

The Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre issued a threat warning to commercial planes to reroute around the cloud.

The Acting Provincial Administrator, John Bivi, said: “This eruption is different. There are two craters that have erupted and lava flow has happened. This is problematic.”

A little more than a month after a 7.5 earthquake struck Papua New Guinea, a 6.9 magnitude tremor occurred near the coast and triggered a tsunami warning earlier today.

Papua New Guinea’s location within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped string of volcanoes along the edges of the Pacific Ocean, makes seismic activity common.

According to National Geographic, 90 percent of all earthquakes occur in the Ring of Fire and 75 percent of the world’s active volcanoes are located in that region.

Although no damage was reported, resort goers near where the quake struck felt the shaking and ran out of buildings in fear of collapse.

“We felt the earthquake, everything was moving so we went out of the building,” May Dovon, a receptionist at the Rapopo Plantation Resort told The Guardian. “Nothing was damaged.”

The earthquake struck around 100 miles southwest of the town of Rabaul on New Britain Island.

According to the Guardian, the area where the quake was felt was much remote than where the earlier 7.5 quake struck.

The latest earthquake triggered a tsunami warning that was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center which went out to all coastlines located within 200 miles of the epicenter of the earthquake.

The tsunami warning was later called off, but while no damage has been reported for this quake the country is still recovering from the earlier quake.

The February earthquake caused major landslides, damaged water supplies and killed 100 people.
