Papua New Guinea volcano: ‘Unusual’ Ring of Fire ERUPTION ‘blocks the sun’ amid mass panic

Papua New Guinea is on high alert after the Maman Island volcano erupted yesterday, forcing 2,000 villagers to evacuate, as concerns grow over the volatile site along the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Papua New Guinea has deployed armed forces to help emergency evacuations, after the Maman Island volcano erupted on Saturday.

The massive eruption sent a plume of ash nine miles into the sky, blocking out the sun for several hours and triggering panic among villagers.

Around 2,000 villagers from three seperate villages have fled so far from the flowing lava and blanket of ash.

Manam Island, just six miles wide, is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and sits along the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire.

Steve Saunders, from the Rabaul Volcano Observatory (RVO), said: “The most affected areas are Baliau and Kuluguma and due to the very poor visibility caused by the ash fall, people are using torch light to move around.”

He added that the eruption was “unusually large” and warned that a new vent had opened, indicating more activity was likely to come.

The ash has been so heavy that trees have snapped under its weight and at least two houses have collapsed.

Peter Sukua, a local leader from Baliau village, said villagers were in a state of shock.

The Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre issued a threat warning to commercial planes to reroute around the cloud.

A team from Papua New Guinea’s National Disaster Centre has been sent to Manam Island to inspect the damage from the eruption.

Madang Governor Peter Yama also confirmed that two Papua New Guinea Defence Force vessels had been sent to help conduct emergency evacuations.

The Acting Provincial Administrator, John Bivi, said: “This eruption is different. There are two craters that have erupted and lava flow has happened. This is problematic.”

Previous eruptions on Manam have killed residents who breathed in the ash or were buried by landslides.

Earthquake near Papua New Guinea triggers tsunami warning

A little more than a month after a 7.5 earthquake struck Papua New Guinea, a 6.9 magnitude tremor occurred near the coast and triggered a tsunami warning earlier today.

Papua New Guinea’s location within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped string of volcanoes along the edges of the Pacific Ocean, makes seismic activity common.

According to National Geographic, 90 percent of all earthquakes occur in the Ring of Fire and 75 percent of the world’s active volcanoes are located in that region.

Although no damage was reported, resort goers near where the quake struck felt the shaking and ran out of buildings in fear of collapse.

“We felt the earthquake, everything was moving so we went out of the building,” May Dovon, a receptionist at the Rapopo Plantation Resort told The Guardian. “Nothing was damaged.”

The earthquake struck around 100 miles southwest of the town of Rabaul on New Britain Island.

According to the Guardian, the area where the quake was felt was much remote than where the earlier 7.5 quake struck.

The latest earthquake triggered a tsunami warning that was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center which went out to all coastlines located within 200 miles of the epicenter of the earthquake.

The tsunami warning was later called off, but while no damage has been reported for this quake the country is still recovering from the earlier quake.

The February earthquake caused major landslides, damaged water supplies and killed 100 people.

Papua New Guinea hit by 6.6 earthquake

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake struck about 80 miles east of Kimbre on the island of New Britain at a depth of about 25 miles, according to the agency.

No tsunami watches or warnings were issued due to the quake, and there were no immediate reports of injuries.

A magnitude 7.5 quake last month in central Papua New Guinea region killed at least 125 people and forced another 35,000 from their homes.

The region is remote and undeveloped, and assessments about the scale of the damage and injuries have been slow to filter out. Strong aftershocks have continued to rattle the area.

The quake on Monday was just the latest spark of activity this year along the volatile “Ring of Fire” seismic fault system.

‘RING OF FIRE’ FURY STRIKES ALASKA, PHILIPPINES, JAPAN

More than half the world’s active volcanoes located above ground are in this ring, according to the USGS.

The region is the location of most of Earth’s subduction zones, where oceanic plates slide under the lighter continental plates. Earthquakes tend to happen when those plates scrape or subside underneath each other, and, when that happens at sea, it can trigger tsunamis.

So far this year, activity in the volatile region included volcanic eruptions in Japan and the Phillipines, and an earthquake off the coast of Alaska.

Magnitude 6.3 Quake strikes off Papua New Guinea, no tsunami threat

The latest quake comes as Papua New Guinea struggles to get aid to desperate survivors of the 26 February quake, which flattened whole villages and spoiled water supplies.

SYDNEY – A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the northeast coast of an island of the Pacific Ocean nation of Papua New Guinea on Saturday, officials said, but the tremor posed no tsunami threat to the region.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which was centred in a much more remote region than a magnitude 7.5 tremor that rocked the country’s mountainous mainland highlands on 26 February, killing 100 people.

The epicenter of Saturday’s quake was located 180 kilometers southwest of Rabaul on New Britain island, some 900 km northeast of the capital Port Moresby, at a depth of 68 km, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The quake was revised down from an initial reading of magnitude 6.8 and a depth of 60 km.

“Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected,” the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin.

Quakes are common in Papua New Guinea, which sits on the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire”, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates. Rabaul lies in the shadow of Mount Tavurvur, an active volcano that destroyed the town in 1994 during a severe eruption.

The latest quake comes as Papua New Guinea struggles to get aid to desperate survivors of the 26 February quake, which flattened whole villages and spoiled water supplies on the country’s main island. A month on, disaster and relief officials say the scale of the emergency is testing the finances and capacity of one of the world’s poorest countries.

The impoverished country is also missing its largest revenue earner, after the quake forced a shutdown of Exxon Mobil Corp’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, which has annual sales of $3 billion at current LNG prices. The firm is still assessing quake damage at its facilities.

Papua New Guinea rocked by HUGE 6.8 earthquake amid Ring of Fire fears

A 6.8 MAGNITUDE earthquake has struck off the island of New Ireland in Papua New Guinea, according to disaster officials, putting the Ring of Fire on high alert.

The earthquake struck off the island of New Ireland in Papua New Guinea.

The devastating quake hit at around 3:40am local time at a depth of six miles (10km), the US Geographical Survey (USGS) said.

Officials at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said that, based on the current evidence, there is no tsunami threat to nearby islands.

A spokesman said: “A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.”

No serious injuries were immediately reported following the incident this morning.

At least 55 people died in a separate earthquake in Papua New Guinea last week, although authorities fear the toll could exceed 100.

The 7.5 magnitude disaster, which took place last Monday, destroyed homes, triggered landslides and halted work at four oil and gas fields.

Southern Highlands governor William Powi yesterday people were feeling traumatised from the earthquake and ongoing aftershocks.

He said: “It is beyond the capacity of the provincial government to cope with the magnitude of destruction and devastation.

“Our people are traumatised and finding it difficult to cope.”

Officials said there is currently no tsunami threat to nearby islands.

Australian Sally Lloyd, who is visiting Papua New Guinea, said villagers were terrified by the constant shaking.

She said: “It is terror. They think the end of the world is happening.”

The Pacific Ring of Fire is the most geologically active area in the world, with more than 90 percent of earthquakes occurring there.

The recent volatility in the region has increased fears for the Big One: a major earthquake in a highly populated area on the US west coast or in Japan.

Papua New Guinea Earthquake Triggers Landslides; at Least 30 Feared Dead

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck central Papua New Guinea early Monday local time, killing at least 14 people in landslides triggered by the tremor.

Unconfirmed reports said the death toll could be at least 30, but officials said it could be days before the final scope of the damage is known. BBC.com said reports of “extensive” damageare coming from the country, with numerous structures claimed by the large slides.

One woman in the town of Mendi said she feared “the ground might open up and swallow us” when her roof gave way, BBC.com reported via Reuters.

The landslides cut off several roads, making it more difficult for officials to reach some of the areas where the damage was most severe, the report added. Networks and electricity were knocked out by the disaster, cutting off communication.

“There are massive, massive disruptions,” Hela Provincial Administrator William Bando told the Associated Press.

A Catholic priest told local media at least four children were among the victims, BBC.com also said.

“Our police station, courthouse, hospital … even private houses have been ripped apart or sunk into the ground,” Philip Undialu, the governor of Hela province, told BBC.com.

Chris McKee, acting director of geohazards management for the Papua New Guinea government, told the AP that tens of thousands of people live in the forested highlands region affected by the quake. Porgera is the site of a large gold mine that employs more than 2,500 residents; the quake halted production at oil and gas plants and coffee plantations in addition to the mines, the AP added.

Papua New Guinea is located on the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, to the east of Indonesia. It is home to about 7 million people.

Huge earthquake strikes Ring of Fire: Papua New Guinea rocked by 7.6 magnitude quake

PAPUA New Guinea has been rocked by a huge 7.5 magnitude earthquake just moments after a smaller seismic event struck Japan, increasing fears of a natural disaster impacting the dangerous region dubbed the ‘Ring of Fire’.

The 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the heart of the island near the near the Southern Highlands area, with tremors felt across the nearby region.

The phenomenon hit at a depth of 10km at roughly 4am local time (6pm GMT).

A further eleven quakes, all with an average magnitude of five, hit the island in the aftermath of the initial hit.

There is not thought to have been any damage or injuries cause by the substantial siesmic event.

Papua New Ginuea rests on the so-called ‘Ring of Fire’ – a hotbed of seismic activity surrounding a tectonic plate that spans the pacific.

Despite the magintude of the huge quake, officials have confirmed there is no risk of a resultant tsunami.

A statement from the US’ Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said: “An Earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 occurred in New Guinea, Papua New Guinea at 1745 UTC on Sunday February 25, 2018.

The huge seismic event rocked the island nation

“Based on all available data, there is no Tsunami threat from this earthquake.”

The quake follows another seismic event in Japan, where a 5.5 magintude earthquake struck just hours before.

Japan’s earthquake occurred some 78 miles from Honshu off the island’s east coast but was felt in several cities including Tokyo and Fukushima.

Tokyo and Fukushima are some 176 miles apart – equivilant to a three-and-a-half hour drive away.

But while the earthquake’s centre was closer to Fukushima, where the nuclear disaster of the same name took place in 2011, the tremor was still felt further south in the island in the city of Tokyo.
