]]> Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer hailed “really good progress” during talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday. After the 80-minute summit, China also announced that it will relax its rules for British citizens ​visiting ‍the ​country, allowing them to ​enter visa-free for trips under 30 days.

British ⁠Prime Minister Keir Starmer told Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday that he wanted to build a “sophisticated relationship” with Beijing to boost the UK economy, signalling a reset after years of strained ties.

On the key day of his four-day visit to China, the first by a British prime minister in eight years, Starmer held an 80-minute summit with Xi at the ​Great Hall of the People before they lunched together. Starmer said the pair chatted about football and Shakespeare, as well as business matters.

China agreed to relax rules to allow some visa-free ⁠travel for British citizens as part of a partnership ​deal which London hopes will help expand its ‍service sector.

]]> BEIJING/MOSCOW, May 16 (Reuters) – China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Thursday pledged a “new era” of partnership between the two most powerful rivals of the United States which they cast as an aggressive Cold War hegemon that was sowing chaos across the world.

Xi greeted Putin on a red carpet outside the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where they were hailed by marching People’s Liberation Army soldiers, a 21-gun salute on Tiananmen Square and children waving the flags of China and Russia.

China and Russia declared a “no limits” partnership in February 2022 when Putin visited Beijing just days before he sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine, triggering the deadliest land war in Europe since World War Two.

Xi, 70, and Putin, 71, signed a joint statement on Thursday about the “new era” that proclaimed opposition to the United States on a host of security issues and a shared view on everything from Taiwan and Ukraine to North Korea and cooperation on new peaceful nuclear technologies and finance.

From deepening defense and military ties to greater collaboration on technology and diversification of supply chains, senior administration officials discussed a wide range of deals in a briefing with reporters.

“The nature, the depth and breadth of our deliverables for this is unprecedented,” said one of the officials.

India has overtaken China as the world’s most populous country and is set to become the third-largest economy in the coming years.

“India will be a critical strategic partner for the United States in the coming decades,” one official said.
