Ukraine and the US have reached a consensus on several key issues aimed at ending Russia’s nearly four-year war, but territorial control in Ukraine’s eastern regions and the management of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant remain unresolved, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy spoke as the US shared the latest 20-point plan with Russian negotiators. A response is expected from Moscow on Wednesday, the Ukrainian president said.

]]> Jan. 19 (UPI) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he has rejected U.S. calls for a Palestinian state after the war in Gaza ends.

Netanyahu told a news conference in Jerusalem on Thursday that he had made clear to Washington that his focus was on defeating Hamas and that he opposes any peace plan involving a pathway to a sovereign Palestinian like the one favored by the Biden administration.

“In any arrangement in the foreseeable future, Israel must have security control over all the territory west of the Jordan River. This clashes with the idea of [Palestinian] sovereignty. What can you do?” Netanyahu said.

“I told this truth to our friends, the Americans, and I also blocked the attempt to impose a reality that would harm Israel’s security. The prime minister needs to be able to say ‘no,’ even to our best friends.”

]]> China’s 12-point plan blames Western governments’ ‘Cold War mentality’ for Russian invasion

The People’s Republic of China has called for a cease-fire between Russia and Ukraine, releasing a 12-point “peace plan” on the one-year anniversary of the invasion.

China’s position paper calls for an immediate end of violence in Ukraine and a return to dialogues with the aim of ending the conflict through diplomacy.

“All parties must stay rational and exercise restraint, avoid fanning the flames and aggravating tensions, and prevent the crisis from deteriorating further or even spiraling out of control,” the peace plan states. “All parties should support Russia and Ukraine in working in the same direction and resuming direct dialogue as quickly as possible, so as to gradually deescalate the situation and ultimately reach a comprehensive ceasefire.”

    “China have told us they have such an initiative. But I have not seen the document yet,” Zelensky said during a news conference with visiting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Kyiv.

    Beijing has sought to position itself as a neutral party in the conflict, while maintaining close ties with strategic ally Russia.
