Authorities said they had been able to access the shooter’s phone but had still not found anything pointing to a motive for opening fire on the former president.

BETHEL PARK, Pa. — Authorities said Monday that they had accessed the phone of the person who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump and had completed searches of his car and his family’s home in suburban Pittsburgh, as ongoing efforts to understand the shooter’s motives have so far come up empty.

The FBI said its investigation remains in the “early stages,” but the immediate lack of a clear motive for Saturday’s shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has only deepened the mystery around the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, more than 24 hours after his name was released by authorities. The presumptive Republican nominee was whisked off the stage during the shooting, which claimed the life of a former fire chief and injured two others.

Gregg McCrary, a former FBI profiler who spent more than 25 years with the bureau, first as a field agent and then in the behavioral science unit, said the lack of information about Crooks, 20, poses a challenge for law enforcement.

Gov. Tom Wolf ordered soldiers to the city in anticipation of a second night of violent riots over deadly cop shooting

The Pennsylvania National Guard was deployed to Philadelphia Tuesday as the city braces for a second night of violent riots after tense confrontations between angry demonstrators and police hours after two officers shot and killed a Black man.

Several hundred guardsmen will assist local agencies in “protecting life, property and the right to peacefully assemble and protest,” Lt. Col. Keith Hickox said in a statement Tuesday. “We are able to conduct operations in support of civil authorities to enhance local law enforcement’s ability to provide continued public safety and critical infrastructure security.”

The move by Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, to activate the guard is a stark difference from other Democratic governors who have been hesitant or slow to mobilize troops in response to unfolding unrest.

The Philadelphia Police Department will also beef up its presence across the city in anticipation of possible unrest over the death of Walter Wallace Jr., 27, city leaders said.

“For today and this evening, we anticipate the chance of additional incidents of civil unrest and, as such, we will be taking additional steps to ensure order,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said during a news conference along with Mayor Jim Kenney and city leaders.

The city will increase the number of officers at “key locations” within the city to respond to any reports of violence, she said. Officials have also asked law enforcement agencies outside the city to help bolster personnel, Outlaw said.

Specifics regarding the number of officers and locations of where they will be placed were not released.

“We were hoping that we won’t have any repeat of we’ve seen last night and we’re taking every precaution that we can,” Kenney said.

Wallace, who struggled with mental health issues, was shot Monday by two officers responding to a domestic call about someone with a weapon. He was armed with a knife and refused to drop it, police said. Each officer fired approximately seven rounds, officials said.

It was not clear how many times Wallace was hit.

The shooting ignited outrage among residents and prompted hundreds to take to the streets in protest.

The gathering turned violent. About 30 officers were injured, including one who was “intentionally run over” by a pickup truck. Some officers were pelted with objects and 91 people were arrested.

Outlaw said eight police vehicles were damaged, including one that was set on fire.

“This completely caught us off guard,” she said of the unrest.

In a joint statement, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., denounced Wallace’s death and the unrest that followed.

“Walter Wallace’s life, like too many others’, was a Black life that mattered — to his mother, to his family, to his community, to all of us,” the statement said. “At the same time, no amount of anger at the very real injustices in our society excuses violence. Attacking police officers and vandalizing small businesses, which are already struggling during a pandemic, does not bend the moral arc of the universe closer to justice.”

Outlaw said the department has not determined when police body camera footage of the shooting will be released.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner reportedly said he hopes that his office will release the footage, but that he would need to discuss it with Outlaw and other city leaders. In a news conference Tuesday afternoon, he pledged that his office will conduct an impartial investigation, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

“We are not out to cover for anybody. We are not out to get anybody,” Krasner said.

In his three years in office, Kranser has charged two police officers over misconduct. Both cases are pending. No Philadelphia police officers have been charged for an on-duty shooting in two decades, according to the newspaper.

Calls from Fox News to the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police, the union that represents rank-and-file officers, were not returned.

Several were damaged Monday night, including 10 CVS Health stores, a company spokeswoman told Fox News. In response, all CVS stores in the city will close at 7 p.m. “out of an abundance of caution.”

“Thankfully, no employees were hurt,” the spokeswoman said. “We’re working to repair the damage and will reopen stores as soon as it is safe to do.”

In February, Penn State confirmed it was teaming up with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to “tackle what could be the most destructive species in 150 years,” the spotted lanternfly.

While these insects aren’t known to harm humans, the pests raise concerns ahead of the holiday season. Spotted lanternflies may lay their eggs on Christmas trees which could then hatch inside homes, the Philly Voice reported.

EXTREMELY RARE ‘OPEN’ BEEHIVE IN VIRGINIA STUNS WILDLIFE EXPERT

Freshly laid eggs “have a grey mud-like covering which can take on a dry cracked appearance over time,” the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture said, encouraging anyone who sees the masses to scrape it off.

Any sightings of spotted lanternfly eggs, which can be killed with alcohol or hand sanitizer, should be reported to state wildlife officials.

A sweeping grand jury report uncovered credible allegations Tuesday against more than 300 predator priests and identified over 1,000 victims of child sex abuse covered up for decades by the Catholic Church in Pennsylvania.

The report is thought to be the most comprehensive to date into abuse in the US church, but while prosecutors have filed charges against two priests, the vast majority of crimes happened too long ago to prosecute under current laws.

The report said testimony from dozens of witnesses and half a million pages of internal church documents contained credible allegations against more than 300 predator priests and more than 1,000 child victims were identifiable.

But the real number was “in the thousands,” the grand jury estimated following an exhaustive, two-year investigation, given those children whose records were lost or who were afraid to come forward.

One cleric raped a seven-year-old girl in hospital after she had her tonsils out, the report said. Another child drank juice, only to wake up the next morning bleeding from his rectum and unable to remember what had happened.

The vast majority of victims were boys and many were pre-pubescent, some manipulated with alcohol or pornography, and some were raped and groped, the report summarized. Many of the priests are dead.

So far only two new priests are being charged with crimes that fall within the statute of limitations. One allegedly ejaculated in the mouth of a seven-year-old and the other assaulted two boys for years until 2010.

“The pattern was abuse, deny and cover up. The effect, not only victimized children, it served a legal purpose that church officials manipulated for their advantage,” Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro told reporters.

– ‘Hid it all’ –

“As a direct consequence of the systematic cover-up by senior church officials almost every instance of child sexual abuse we found is too old to be prosecuted.”

The grand jury called for changes in the law that would scrap the statute of limitations for child sex abuse, give victims more time to file civil lawsuits and tighten legislation compelling people to report abuse they find out about.

“Despite some institutional reform, individual leaders of the church have largely escaped public accountability,” the report said.

“Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. For decades.”

Between 5,700 and 10,000 Catholic priests have been accused of sexual abuse in the United States, but only a few hundred have been tried, convicted, and sentenced for their crimes, according to the watchdog Bishop Accountability.

Since the abuse crisis became public in the 2000’s, the US church has spent more than $3 billion in settlements, according to Bishop Accountability.

The group has documented settlements for 5,679 alleged victims of Catholic clergy — only a third of 15,235 allegations that bishops say they have received through 2009. One estimate suggests up there were 100,000 US victims.

A grand jury investigation into the Pennsylvania diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, one of those omitted in Tuesday’s report, revealed in 2016 that two bishops spent four decades covering up sexual abuse of hundreds of children.

The number of 300 predator priests detailed in Tuesday’s report dwarfs the estimates of 150-250 in identified since 2002 in Boston, Massachusetts.
