MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off Sarangani on Monday morning, killing at least 35 people, leaving 12 others missing and injuring more than 200 as buildings collapsed and landslides hit several areas in Mindanao.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tectonic earthquake occurred at 7:37 a.m. It was initially recorded as magnitude 7.0 before being upgraded to magnitude 7.8.

Exclusive: Satellite images show fresh Chinese bomber deployment in South China Sea

HONG KONG, March 28 (Reuters) – China deployed two long-range H-6 bombers around the Scarborough Shoal this week, in Beijing’s latest move to assert sovereignty over the hotly disputed atoll in the South China Sea, satellite images obtained by Reuters showed.

The deployment, which was not publicised by China, came ahead of U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s visit to the Philippines, which also claims the shoal that lies within its exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles.

China’s defence ministry did not immediately respond to questions from Reuters on the scale of the deployment or whether it was timed to coincide with Hegseth’s trip.

Exclusive: US deploys Typhon missile launchers to new location in Philippines

Jan 23 (Reuters) – The U.S. military has moved its Typhon launchers – which can fire multipurpose missiles up to thousands of kilometres – from Laoag airfield in the Philippines to another location on the island of Luzon, a senior Philippine government source said.

The Tomahawk cruise missiles in the launchers can hit targets in both China and Russia from the Philippines; the SM-6 missiles it also carries can strike air or sea targets more than 200 km (165 miles) away.

The senior Philippine government source said the redeployment would help determine where and how fast the missile battery could be moved to a new firing position. That mobility is seen as a way to make them more survivable during a conflict.

Philippines, United States sign military intelligence-sharing deal

MANILA, Nov 18 (Reuters) – The Philippines and the United States signed a military intelligence-sharing deal on Monday, deepening defence ties between the two nations facing common security challenges in the region.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin signed the agreement with his Philippine counterpart, Gilberto Teodoro, at Manila’s military headquarters where they also broke ground for a coordination center that will facilitate collaboration between their armed forces.

Called the General Security of Military Information Agreement or GSOMIA, the pact allows both countries to share classified military information securely.

“Not only will this allow the Philippines access to higher capabilities and big-ticket items from the United States, it will also open opportunities to pursue similar agreements with like-minded nations,” said Philippines’ defence ministry spokesperson Arsenio Andolong.

Exclusive: US keeps missile system in Philippines as China tensions rise

MANILA, Sept 19 (Reuters) – The United States has no immediate plans to withdraw a mid-range missile system deployed in the Philippines, despite Chinese demands, and is testing the feasibility of its use in a regional conflict, sources with knowledge of the matter said.

The Typhon system, which can be equipped with cruise missiles capable of striking Chinese targets, was brought in for joint exercises earlier this year, both countries said at the time, but has remained there.

The Southeast Asian archipelago, Taiwan’s neighbour to the South, is an important part of U.S. strategy in Asia and would be an indispensable staging point for the military to aid Taipei in the event of a Chinese attack.

China and Russia have condemned the first deployment of the system to the Indo-Pacific, accusing Washington of fuelling an arms race.

China’s foreign ministry said on Thursday it was very concerned about the plan to keep the system in place.

Typhoon Gaemi hits China after deaths in Taiwan and Philippines

Typhoon Gaemi has made landfall in mainland China after wreaking havoc in Taiwan and the Philippines.

More than 150,000 people living in the south-eastern Chinese province of Fujan have been relocated to safer areas in anticipation of the storm.

It comes after widespread flooding and landslides across Taiwan and the Philippines, killing at least 21 people.

The Philippines says it is “racing against time” to contain an oil spill after a tanker carrying 1.5 million litres of industrial fuel capsized and sank off of the country’s coast.

Filipino soldiers fought off Chinese coast guard ‘with bare hands’

Philippines soldiers used their “bare hands” to fight off Chinese coast guard personnel armed with swords, spears and knives in the disputed South China Sea, the country’s top military commander has said.

General Romeo Brawner accused Chinese vessels of ramming Philippine boats, then boarding them and seizing weapons.

One Filipino soldier lost a thumb when his vessel was rammed, the general said. China denied its personnel were to blame, saying they had been “restrained”.

There have been a string of dangerous encounters as the two sides seek to enforce their claims on disputed reefs and outcrops – this appears to be an escalation.

Philippines calls for expelling Chinese diplomats as South China Sea row escalates

MANILA, May 10 (Reuters) – The Philippines’ national security adviser called on Friday for Chinese diplomats to be expelled over an alleged leak of a phone conversation with a Filipino admiral in a significant escalation of a bitter row over the South China Sea.

China’s embassy in Manila had orchestrated “repeated acts of engaging and dissemination of disinformation, misinformation and malinformation”, with the objective of sowing discord, division and disunity, Eduardo Ano said in a statement.

Those actions “should not be allowed to pass unsanctioned without serious penalty”, he said.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian called the comments provocative and said Chinese diplomats in the Philippines had to be allowed to do their job.

“China solemnly requests the Philippine side to effectively safeguard the normal performance of duties by Chinese diplomatic personnel, stop infringing and provoking, and refrain from denying the facts,” Lin said at a regular press briefing in Beijing.

Philippines urges neighbors to stand together more strongly against China in the South China Sea

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said Monday that he had no choice but to defend his country’s territory in the South China Sea against what he called Chinese aggression and illegal actions in pursuit of Beijing’s own territorial claims.

“It is unfortunate that despite the clarity provided by international law, provocative, unilateral and illegal actions continue to infringe upon our sovereignty, our sovereign rights and jurisdictions,” Marcos told the Lowy Institute international policy think tank in the Australian city of Melbourne.

China claims sovereignty over virtually the entire South China Sea, which is one of the world’s most crucial waterways for shipping. That has put it at odds with the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei, which all maintain claims to islands, reefs and undersea resources in the region.

Manila, Philippines:

A strong magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook the southern Philippines on Friday, killing a married couple as people fled buildings and part of a shopping mall ceiling collapsed.

No tsunami threat was issued after the quake struck off Sarangani province on the main southern island of Mindanao at a depth of 78 kilometres (48 miles) at 4.14 pm (0814 GMT), the US Geological Service said in a statement.
