Karol Nawrocki, who takes over as Poland’s president on August 6, owes his rapid ascent to a significant shift in voters’ political opinions and ideological preferences, some of which have echoes in the political scene in the United States. Those trends, and Nawrocki’s approach to politics, could serve the new head of state well in his dealings with US President Donald Trump—and help keep both countries aligned in the contest against Russia.

Nawrocki’s narrow win in June came as a surprise, as his opponent, the liberal mayor of Warsaw Rafal Trzaskowski, was largely regarded as a shoo-in. However, Trzaskowski’s poor campaign and apparent detachment from vast segments of Polish society led to his failure.

SEOUL, June 3 (UPI) — South Koreans headed to the polls in record numbers on Tuesday to vote for a new president exactly six months after a botched martial law decree by impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol unleashed political turmoil and deepened divisions in the country.

As of 6:00 p.m., some 33.8 million voters had cast a ballot, reaching a record-breaking 76.1% of South Korea’s 44.4 million eligible voters, according to the National Election Commission. The figure was the highest during the same period since South Korea began holding direct elections in 1987.

Interest in the race has remained sky-high since a snap election was called after Yoon’s removal from office in April. Most polls have shown liberal Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung holding a commanding lead over the conservative People Power Party’s Kim Moon-soo, with a Gallup Korea survey last week giving Lee an edge of 49% to 35%.

George Simion, the leader of the far-right AUR party, won a dramatic first-round victory earlier this month, riding a wave of anger from Romanians who had seen the presidential race annulled late last year because of claims of Russian interference.

But it was the softly spoken Nicusor Dan who swept to victory with 53.6% of the vote, even though Simion was more successful in the diaspora.

“We need to build Romania together irrespective of who you voted for,” said Dan, once his victory was secure.

Romania has set a date to rerun its presidential election after concerns of Russia’s “aggressive hybrid action” first time round, but there’s still a risk the result may be similar at the second attempt and see ultranationalist Călin Georgescu triumph.

The new vote will take place on May 4, with a runoff planned two weeks later, on May 18.

The Moldovan Central Electoral Commission confirmed Sandu’s victory on Monday morning.

Sandu won 55% of the vote, according to preliminary results, and in a late-night speech on Sunday she promised to be president for all Moldovans.

Her rival Alexandr Stoianoglo, who was backed by the pro-Russian Party of Socialists, had called for a closer relationship with Moscow.

During the day the president’s national security adviser said there had been “massive interference” from Russia in Moldova’s electoral process that had “high potential to distort the outcome”.
