French President Emmanuel Macron is unable to dispose of his three-way-split parliament, so instead he has attempted to put together a new government after the last became the shortest-lived in modern history. The job was too much for skilled negotiator Michel Barnier who found himself in the job for just three months until his government collapsed last month, now Macron turns to a man described as a “maneuverer, champion of pluralism and compromise”.

Rishi Sunak – the outgoing PM – accepted responsibility for the result and apologised to defeated colleagues during a brief statement outside a rainy 10 Downing Street. He said he would resign as party leader in the coming weeks.

Italy took over the rotating presidency of the Group of Seven (G7), which includes the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Britain and Italy, at the start of January.

It will host numerous ministerial meetings throughout the year, including a leaders’ summit in June.

However, Meloni said she wanted to hold a special session before June focused on AI.

Liz Truss has resigned as UK prime minister after just 45 days in office.

Speaking outside of 10 Downing Street on Thursday afternoon, she announced there will be another leadership election within the ruling Conservative Party, which will decide who succeeds her.

This makes Truss the shortest-serving PM in UK history and the country’s fourth leader in little over three years. Her replacement will be appointed in the coming week.

Announcing her resignation, Truss said she arrived in office during a “time of great economic and international instability.”

“We delivered on energy bills and cutting national insurance,” she continued. “We set out a vision for a low tax high growth economy that would take advantage of the freedoms of Brexit.”

Former foreign secretary takes over from Boris Johnson, inheriting a country on cusp of crisis

LONDON—Liz Truss became Britain’s third prime minister in just over three years on Tuesday, appointed by Queen Elizabeth II and entering Downing Street amid a toxic brew of looming recession, high inflation and a historic energy price shock.

Ms. Truss, 47, flew to Balmoral, the queen’s home in Scotland, to formally take over from Boris Johnson. After the monarch asked her to form a government she will address the nation from London later Tuesday. Ms. Truss will then announce the makeup of her new cabinet.

Barely into office, Ms. Truss must quickly make a policy decision that could shape the rest of her tenure: how to protect businesses and individuals from soaring energy prices caused by the continuing war in Ukraine. Household energy bills are set to soar by 80% next month, proving unaffordable for many and pushing up inflation.

The longtime government minister has marketed herself as a libertarian in the mold of former leader Margaret Thatcher, but the expected economic fallout of the energy crisis is prompting the new leader to consider a massive government bailout of consumers and businesses to avoid a wave of bankruptcies and deeper economic pain.
