France is going to have to get its act together if it wants to see the cash, says Home Secretary Priti Patel

The French government will not see a penny of the promised financial aid until it stops the flow of migrants heading for the British Isles across the English Channel, said British Home Secretary Priti Patel on Tuesday, just a day after a record 1,000 migrants allegedly arrived to British beaches.

The United Kingdom is to send €62.7 million to France to strengthen police patrols.

According to preliminary reports from the British media, on Monday, the record in terms of the number of migrants who came to Great Britain by sea from France was broken.

Sky News and Daily Mail talk about 1,000 men, women, and children but point out that the interior ministry has not confirmed the figures.

The previous record comes from Aug. 21, when 828 migrants arrived on British shores in one day.

On Monday evening, Patel met with her fellow conservative MPs, whom she told that the French were to blame for the relentless wave of migrants arriving in the UK.

According to The Times, the Home Secretary is ready to suspend the promised funding if the French police fail to stop at least three of the four migrant ships.

“We’ve not given them a penny of the money so far, and France is going to have to get its act together if it wants to see the cash. It’s payment by results, and we’ve not yet seen those results,” Patel told MPs.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson supported Patel and added that the government was ready to take all possible steps to stop migratory pressure.

The UK government is considering using cruise ships, possibly similar to this one docked near Athens this week, to process asylum seekrs –

The UK government is considering plans to move arriving asylum seekers offshore to small islands or disused ferries moored of the British coast while their claims are processed, officials have said.

The proposals are among several being debated by ministers who want to discourage migrants from attempting to cross into the country from France.

More than 5,000 people successfully crossed the English Channel in small boats in the first eight months of this year, double the number that made the journey in the whole of 2019.

Many are taken by people smugglers who can charge thousands of euros per person for the trip.

European authorities announced this week that 12 people were arrested as part of a four-nation police operation to dismantle one criminal network of smugglers.

But British Home Secretary Priti Patel is understood to favour offshore processing, a system controversially used in Australia, to fulfil her promise to deter arriving economic migrants by making the sea route “unviable” for illegal crossings.

One idea — to process the migrants on decommissioned oil rigs in the North Sea — was deemed a “no go”, The Times reported on Thursday.

But plans including using dozens of cabins on board old cruise ships or building a processing centre on a small Scottish island are still being discussed, it added.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed to UK media that plans were being developed so that the UK “can keep providing protection to those who need it while preventing abuse of the system and criminality, which, as we have seen with the rise in gang-facilitated Channel crossings, is a problem.

“As part of that work, we have been looking at what a whole host of other countries do to inform a plan for the UK.”

Other possible locations for potential offshore centres including the remote Atlantic Ocean of Ascension Island are no longer being considered as sites after officials said they would be expensive and logistically complicated.

Johnson has called crossing the Channel a “bad and stupid and dangerous and criminal thing to do”, stating that “cruel and criminal gangs” were taking advantage of those who are vulnerable.

The proposed British model would emulate a system used for decades in Australia, where asylum seekers arriving by boat were not kept in the country while their claims were processed.

Human rights campaigners have long opposed the Australian government’s policy of moving migrants to centres on the islands of Manus, in Papua New Guinea, and Nauru. The controversial centres have been closed and reopened several times in recent years.
