Jakarta (AsiaNews/Agencies) – A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Banda Sea today between the Sulawesi islands and Papua, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the US Geological Survey reported.

Since the quake was extremely deep (640 km), it was not powerful enough to trigger a tsunami in the Indian Ocean region.

Still, people in Kupang, a city in the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara, far south of the epicentre, ran outside, frightened, as buildings and streetlights swayed.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency did not report any damages so far.

This is the third major earthquake to hit the country in the last two days. On Wednesday, two large and shallow earthquakes, 6.8 and 6.9 respectively, struck within six minutes of one another off Indonesia’s Sumatra Island.

In neither case was a tsunami warning issued, nor any injuries or serious damage reported.

Located on the Pacific Ocean’s seismically active ‘Ring of Fire’, Indonesia has regularly experienced deadly earthquakes and tsunamis.

In 2018, a 7.5 earthquake triggered a tsunami that left 4,300 people dead or missing. The 2004 9.1 earthquake off the coast of Sumatra unleashed a huge tsunami that killed 220,000 people in the Indian Ocean region, 170,000 in Indonesia alone.

Jakarta (VNA) – A 7.1-magnitude quake struck the area near Ternate city of North Maluku province of Indonesia early November 15.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake was centered in the sea about 140 kilometers northwest of Ternate. However, the agency gave no tsunami alert.

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climate, and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunami warning for North Sulawesi and North Maluku, but it was canceled about two hours later.

No report on casualties and damage has been given.

Indonesia, one of the most disaster-prone nations on earth, straddles the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide and a large portion of the world’s volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.

A 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island in September 2018 killed more than 2,200 people, with over 1,000 more missing.

AMBON CITY, Indonesia: At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured after a strong earthquake struck Indonesia’s remote Maluku islands Thursday (Sep 26), destroying homes and triggering landslides that buried at least one of the victims.

“The total number of people who died in the earthquake is 20,” national disaster mitigation spokesman Agus Wibowo said in a statement.

“At least 100 people were injured and more than 2,000 evacuated.”

Among those killed was an infant, he added.

Terrified residents ran into the streets as buildings fell in around them after the 6.5-magnitude quake hit at around 8.45 am local time (0045 GMT).

One person was buried in a landslide while others were hit by falling debris, the local disaster agency said earlier.

Another person died of a heart attack as the tremor hit, while one woman died after falling off her motorbike while fleeing to higher ground, officials said.

Residents in Ambon, a city of about 400,000 people, were seen helping injured residents with blood-stained clothes, while images showed wrecked homes with collapsed walls and rubble-strewn on the ground.

Some patients fled a local hospital as the quake hit, prompting officials to set up makeshift shelters outside the building, an official said.

“The impact was felt across Ambon city and surrounding areas,” said Rahmat Triyono, head of the earthquake and tsunami division at Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

“Many people were woken up by the shaking … it felt like a truck was passing by.”

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck about 37km northeast of Ambon in Maluku province at a depth of 29km.

The area was hit by at least two dozen aftershocks including one that measured 5.6-magnitude, Triyono said.

“I was asleep with my family when suddenly the house started to shake,” said an AFP reporter in Ambon.

“The quake was really strong. We ran from our house and saw the neighbors fleeing too. Everybody was panicking.”

Architect Suryanto Soekarno said a construction site where he and his employees were working was rocked by the tremor.

“It was a really hard shock,” he told AFP.

“Filing cabinets fell over and my employees ran away to save themselves. Some were injured but thank God only with minor wounds.”

“NO NEED TO PANIC”

Initial reports said the quake struck offshore, but later analysis found it hit onshore, raising the potential for damage, according to Indonesia’s national disaster mitigation agency.

Local BMKG head Oral Sem Wilar called for calm.

“People were panicking and started to evacuate in some places, but we are trying to tell them there’s no need to panic because there’s no tsunami threat,” he told AFP.

The Southeast Asian archipelago is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth. It experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide.

In August, five people died and several were injured after a powerful undersea earthquake rocked Indonesia’s heavily populated Java island.

Last year, a 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island left more than 4,300 people dead or missing.

The force of the impact saw entire neighborhoods leveled by liquefaction– a process where the ground starts behaving like a liquid and swallows up the earth like quicksand.

Nearly 60,000 people are still living in makeshift accommodation nearly a year after the double disaster, the Red Cross said this week.

On Dec 26, 2004, a devastating 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra and triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 throughout the region, including around 170,000 in Indonesia.

WASHINGTON: A powerful but deep 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Papua New Guinea on Tuesday (May 7), officials said, cutting power and knocking items off shelves though there were no immediate reports of serious damage.

The quake struck at a depth of 127km, about 30km from the town of Bulolo, according to the US Geological Survey. It was also felt in the capital Port Moresby about 250km away.

Officials said there were no immediate reports of major damage and the depth of the tremor meant there was no tsunami threat.

“We have no reports as yet” of serious damage, Inspector Leo Kaikas, Bulolo police station commander, told AFP. “We are still assessing the situation,” he said.

Staff at Bulolo’s Pine Lodge hotel said there was very minor damage from objects falling off tables, but nothing more serious.

Residents in Lae, more than 100km away, said the quake knocked things off shelves and worktops and cut electricity in some areas.

“I had just woken up,” Christopher Lam, a designer who lives in the city, told AFP. “It lasted a little more than 30 seconds. We had household items knocked off their shelves and the power got cut.

“Things seem to have returned to normal. No structural damage here, though I’m not sure about other buildings in the city.”

There are estimated to be around 110,000 people living within 50km of the epicentre, according to UN data.

The Moresby-based National Disaster Management office said while there were no early reports of damage, but news from the quake zone could take time to trickle in.

“We are awaiting assessments,” a spokesman told AFP.

The country’s rugged highlands region was hit by a 7.5-magnitude quake in February last year that buried homes and triggered landslides, killing at least 125 people.

The scale of that disaster did not become apparent for days due to PNG’s poor communications and infrastructure.

There are regular earthquakes in Papua New Guinea, which sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire – a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.

Along the South Solomon trench, an area of the Pacific that includes PNG, there have been 13 quakes of magnitude 7.5 or more recorded since 1900, according to USGS data.

Thanks to the incredible work of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the United States Geological Survey and the National Earthquake Information Center, you now can – and I suspect even seasoned seismologists will be blown away by the animation they’ve produced.

The video below, released back in December of last year, shows every single recorded earthquake or earthquake sequence from January 1, 1901 straight through to New Year’s Eve of the year 2000. The size of the circles is proportional to their magnitude (roughly speaking, a measure of how much energy each quake unleashes from its source), and the colours are linked to how deep beneath the surface the quake took place.

If you needed a reminder that the planet has a pulse – largely thanks to plate tectonics – then here it is. There’s a lot of information to take in, so let me highlight the most interesting points of the animation for you.

See animation here: https://www.garnertedarmstrong.org/earthquakes-of-the-20th-century-video-animation/ or https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=156&v=jhmF-IwP6uM

First off, the number of recorded earthquakes seems to dramatically increase over time, particularly from the 1970s onwards. This isn’t because the planet is suddenly becoming more seismically active; it’s because around that time, seismometer tech, as well as telecommunications and signal processing tech, became significantly more advanced. As time ticked on, more seismometers were increasingly placed in seismically active and potentially treacherous parts of the world. Both these factors meant that more quakes were being detected with greater precision than ever before. (In fact, seismometers today are so ludicrously sensitive that they pick up on all kinds of rumbles, not just those created by tectonic activity.)

That technological improvement is still continuing, by the way: Aside from continual improvements to computational processing power, newer machine learning techniques are able to pick out previously undetected, very low magnitude (as low as 0.3, for example) quakes hidden in pre-existing seismological records. In fact, as smaller quakes have and still happen all the time compared to their larger and far less frequent brethren, these techniques are increasing the number of documented earthquakes by at least ten times in parts of California compared to those picked up by more traditional methods.

You can also probably spot that most earthquakes take place on a horseshoe-shaped ring around the Pacific Ocean. This is the so-called Ring of Fire, a conveniently shaped network of major tectonic boundaries that are continuously shifting around in very complex ways.

This part of the world is responsible for 75 percent of the world’s volcanoes and a staggering 90 percent of the planet’s earthquakes, but despite these statistics, this colloquially named network doesn’t mean much geologically. Although the underlying causes may be similar, any quakes that occur here happen independently of each other. In some cases, an earthquake can trigger another one on the same fault or on a fault very close to it, but that’s it. There’s also pretty much no evidence that volcanic eruptions can trigger other volcanic eruptions, although there’s an ongoing healthy debate as to whether earthquakes, in some circumstances, can initiate volcanic eruptions nearby.

As is also depicted by the animation, the very largest earthquakes, particularly those approaching or exceeding a magnitude 9.0 event, occur on or within subduction zones, like the one running along the western seaboard of South America. This is when one tectonic plate is descending and falling beneath another and into the lower mantle to be slowly destroyed. In general, the geological conditions at these sites allow for the greatest amount of stress to accumulate over long periods of time, as well as permitting huge and sometimes lengthy slips on the faults in question. Nothing lasts forever, mind you: More than a billion years from now, when enough of Earth’s internal heat has trickled away into space, plate tectonics will grind to a halt, subduction zones will die out, and these sorts of colossally powerful earthquakes will cease to happen.

At any one moment in time, an earthquake is taking place somewhere in the world, just as around 40 volcanoes or so are erupting. It’s one thing to say it; it’s another, far more impactful thing entirely to see it. So do yourself a favour: watch these quakes rock the planet, and you might just come away with a new appreciation of how unbelievably active our planet is.

MANILA: A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck at sea off the southern Philippine coast late Friday (Feb 8), though there were no early reports of damage and the local seismology office said it expected none.

The US Geological Survey and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake struck at 7.55pm (1155 GMT), its epicentre about 41km east of the town of General Luna on Mindanao island.

It had a relatively shallow depth, measured at 24 kilometres by the US agency – and 19 kilometres by the local quake monitors – but the latter said in an advisory that it was not expected to have caused damage.

The Philippines is part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches from quake-prone Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

In recent months there has been an alarming amount of seismic activity all along “the Ring of Fire”, and there have been times when the number of global earthquakes has been way above normal. Could it be possible that all of this unusual seismic activity is leading up to something? As you will see below, experts are telling us that we are overdue for the “Big One” to hit California. And when it does eventually strike, it could be far worse than most people would dare to imagine.

Most of the 39 significant earthquakes that have struck California within the last 24 hours have happened along the San Andreas Fault. The following comes from CBS News…

A swarm of earthquakes along the San Andreas Fault, the largest measuring a 4.1 magnitude, rumbled through the Hollister area and the Salinas Valley Friday morning. CBS San Francisco, citing officials, reports the quakes rattled nerves but caused no major damage.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 4.1 quake hit at 5:58 a.m. PDT 12 miles southwest of the small community of Tres Pinos. It was followed by quakes measuring 3.6, 3.2 and 3.0.

Officials are saying that this shaking was caused by “movement along the San Andreas Fault system”, and the initial magnitude 4.1 quake was quickly followed by a series of more than 20 aftershocks…

After a magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck 12 miles from Hollister at 5:58 a.m., more than 20 aftershocks rattled the area in the following hours. The smaller quakes registered as high as 3.6 magnitude and were felt as far away as Monterey and Santa Cruz.

When you live in an area that sits along a major earthquake fault, it can be easy to forget the potential danger if nothing happens for an extended period of time.

But the danger is always there, and for many California residents the rattling that we witnessed on Friday was a clear reminder of that fact.

Thankfully, these earthquakes did not cause substantial damage, but local residents were definitely shaken up…

One in Hollister said: “Was asleep, felt like someone was shaking the bed.”

Another resident in Monterey Bay expressed concern that recent quakes could indicate a major earthquake – commonly known as the ‘Big One’ – could be on the way.

They wrote: “Been feeling a lot of tremors the last several months.

“The Hayward Fault is overdue and coming to thump. Any time now. It’s definitely coming relatively soon.”

Hopefully this current shaking will fizzle out and things will go back to normal.

But experts tell us that California is definitely overdue for a major earthquake and that “the Big One” will happen at some point…

Experts say California is overdue for a huge earthquake with some warning a major magnitude 7.0 is likely within the next 30 years.

A 2008 report by USGS described the Hayward Fault, which runs to the east of San Francisco, as a “tectonic time bomb” which could threaten the city’s seven million residents.

And when “the Big One” does strike, it could potentially be far worse than most people have ever imagined.

In a previous article, I quoted from a news story about a recent study that concluded that a major earthquake could potentially “plunge large parts of California into the sea almost instantly”…

The Big One may be overdue to hit California, but scientists near LA have found a new risk for the area during a major earthquake.

They claim that if a major tremor hits the area, it could plunge large parts of California into the sea almost instantly.

The discovery was made after studying the Newport-Inglewood fault, which has long been believed to be one of Southern California’s danger zones.

When I first read that, I was absolutely stunned.

But according to Cal State Fullerton professor Matt Kirby, there is a very strong possibility that this could actually happen someday…

Cal State Fullerton professor Matt Kirby, who worked with the Leeper on the study, said the sinking would occur quickly and likely result in part of California being covered by the sea.

“It’s something that would happen relatively instantaneously,” Prof Kirby said. “Probably today if it happened, you would see seawater rushing in.”

The fact that our planet is entering a time of unprecedented seismic activity has been a major theme in my work for a very long time, and I am particularly concerned about the west coast. Just a few weeks ago, there was some unusual shaking farther north along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, and I anticipate that the shaking of coastal areas will continue to intensify until things finally break loose.

And the truth is that we can see signs of impending change all around us. Down in southern California, a “moving sinkhole” is now traveling up to 60 feet a day, and it is “destroying everything in its path”…

It is the beginning of the San Andreas fault, where experts fear ‘The Big One’ could begin.

But a small, bubbling pool of mud that stinks of rotting eggs near the Salton Sea is causing concern.

Dubbed ‘the slow one’, experts studying the phenomenon say it is similar to a ‘moving sinkhole’ – and is speeding up, destroying everything in its path.

Imperial County officials studying the muddy spring say it has has been increasing in speed through – first 60 feet over a few months, and then 60 feet in a single day.

Of course this is not just a west coast phenomenon. We have been witnessing unusual seismic activity all over the world, and it has become very clear that our planet is becoming increasingly unstable.

Natural disasters are going to continue to grow worse and worse, and that is going to have extremely serious implications for all of us.

A huge magnitude 6.8 quake rocked the region early on Tuesday morning.

The earthquake followed an earlier quake that was given a preliminary 6.5 magnitude on the Richter scale.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has reported the first quake has no potential to cause damage.

It was reviewed after it was initially registered as a 6.5 and then downgraded to a 6.3 on the Richter scale.
