DONALD Trump blasted the EU and other nations at a rally in Michigan by threatening to “take on” the bloc and claims it takes “advantage” of the US.

The US president said the EU “sounds so nice” but it was “formed to take advantage of the US”.

Mr Trump told supporters: “I do not blame them (the EU). I blame past presidents.

“Long-term you’re going to be so happy… or we are not doing business with these guys.”

The EU was temporarily spared from a round of tariffs on metal imports imposed by Mr Trump’s administration in March, but the exemption is due to expire in the coming days.

While he pledged to support US farmers, Mr Trump accused Brussels of putting up barriers and called for markets to be opened up.

He said: “When we take on China or the European Union, which has tremendous blocks, it’s very hard for us to sell stuff into the European Union.

“It was put there to take advantage of the United States, OK.”

Responding to a member of the crowd shouting “not anymore”, he replied: “You’re right. Not anymore. We told them that yesterday actually, we said the same words ‘not anymore’. Those days are over.

“But we’ve got to open up these markets. It’s not fair.”

French president Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are reported to have urged Mr Trump to extend the EU’s exemption from punishing tariffs on aluminium and steel during recent visits to Washington.

Bemoaning the US’s deficit in international trade, Mr Trump told the rally: “Long-term you’re going to be so happy… we’re going to get it opened up or we’re not doing business with these countries.

The President also lashed out at China during his harangue.

Donald Trump has been engaged in a war of words with China over trade.

Earlier this month, US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin hinted that America is ready for an all-out trade war with China.

The President also slammed the location of the US embassy in London.

He blamed the Obama administration for building the embassy in an “off-location”.

The US leader said it was “lousy and horrible”.

Mr Trump added: “In the UK, in London, we had the best site in all of London. The best site.

“Well, some genius said, we’re gonna sell the site and then we’re going to take the money and build a new embassy…

“They go out and they buy a horrible location. And they build a new embassy.

“That’s the good news. The bad news is it cost over a billion dollars.”

Downing Street confirmed on Thursday that the Trump would conduct his first Presidential visit to the UK in July.

The trip follows months of speculation over a potential date.

It is expected to be a “working visit” rather than a full-blown state occasion.

UK ambassador to the US Sir Kim Darroch said he was “delighted” Mr Trump will visit.
