Nikkei jumps after landslide victory for Takaichi’s ruling party

BANGKOK – Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 share index jumped as much as 5% to a record on Monday after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s governing party secured a two-thirds supermajority in a parliamentary election.

The Nikkei ended up 2,110.26 points from Friday to close at 56,363.94, having briefly topped 57,000 for the first time to set a new record.

The landslide victory gives Takaichi a much stronger mandate to pursue market-friendly policies, though the impact on Japan’s currency and bond markets may not be quite so positive.

Japan’s snap elections: A reckless risk or calculated gamble?

Less than half a year into office and Japan’s new prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, has called a snap election, dissolving the Lower House on Jan. 23 and sending voters to the polls on Feb. 8.

“I am putting my future as prime minister on this election,” Takaichi said at a press conference Monday, according to a Google translation of her remarks in Japanese.

“I would like the people to make a direct decision on whether they can entrust the management of the nation to Sanae Takaichi.”

The move comes despite the Lower House’s term running until October 2028, raising questions over why Takaichi chose to seek a fresh mandate so early.

President seeks to ensure stability during transition after green-left alliance’s surprise electoral win

Emmanuel Macron has asked Gabriel Attal to stay on temporarily as France’s prime minister to maintain stability after a snap general election left the country facing a hung parliament and fraught negotiations to form a new government.

Parties on the left want to seize the moment after their shock win over the far right and on Monday met to discuss policy and potential prime minister candidates. The green-left alliance, the New Popular Front (NFP), surprised pollsters by coming first in the final round – a win that was considered highly unlikely, with pre-election polls predicting a far-right surge into the lead.

However, with no absolute majority, efforts to form a new French government may take weeks.

The snap election was called last month after a humiliating defeat to the far-right National Rally (RN) of Marine Le Pen in European parliamentary elections.
