LONDON — Millions of people in Spain, Portugal and parts of southern France lost power on Monday following a “severe disruption” in the European electrical system, the Spanish prime minister said.

The cause of the disruption is still unknown, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in remarks Monday evening local time.

The Spanish government said it called an emergency crisis meeting to fix the situation as soon as possible.

The interior minister of Spain declared a national emergency in multiple regions, including the communities of Madrid and Andalucía, due to the power outage.

]]> MADRID, Nov 19 (Reuters) – Spain will legalise about 300,000 undocumented immigrants per year over the next three years as it seeks to expand its labour force in the face of an ageing population, Migration Minister Elma Saiz told reporters on Tuesday.

Spain, led by a leftist minority coalition government, has been largely receptive to migrants even as other European countries such as Italy and Germany seek to tighten border controls.

“Spain has to opt between being an open, prosperous country or being a closed and poor one, and we have chosen the former,” Saiz said, adding that the nation needs around 250,000 to 300,000 tax-paying foreign workers a year to sustain its welfare state.

The reform shortens and simplifies legal and administrative procedures for work and residence permits, allowing migrants to register either as self-employed or salaried workers, and provides them with additional labour rights guarantees.

]]> Oct. 31 (UPI) — Rescue efforts were continuing Thursday in eastern Spain after more than a year’s worth of rainfall fell in eight hours, triggering flash flooding that killed at least 158 people, destroyed roads, bridges and cut power and left some areas cut off from the outside world.

The number of confirmed deaths climbed from 95 to at least 158 Thursday, as authorities continued to make grizzly discoveries, including multiple people trapped inside vehicles and buried by mud and debris, Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente told reporters.

Authorities said 92 of the deaths were in Valencia Province on the eastern coast, two in neighboring Castilla La Mancha and one in Malaga Province on the southern coast but with many areas only accessible by helicopter and an unknown number of people unaccounted for there were fears the death toll could rise.

]]> Dozens of tractors have been blocking all major crossing points between Spain and France from Irun in the Basque Country to La Jonquera in Catalonia since Monday morning. The rally is expected to last until Tuesday.

Farmers’ protests have yet again caused traffic chaos in the continent in a message to lawmakers in Brussels and their potential voters just days before the European elections.

The protest, organised by Spanish Revolta Pagesa, a Catalan farmers’ platform, together with a number of agricultural organisations from all over Spain and several French farmers’ unions, saw dozens of tractors and other vehicles block the border between Spain and France since Monday morning.

They obstructed all main crossing points stretching from Irun in the Basque Country to La Jonquera in Catalonia.

Ireland, Norway, and Spain have announced they will formally recognise a Palestinian state from 28 May.

Spain and Ireland said the decision was not against Israel nor in favour of Hamas, but rather in support of peace.

Israel reacted angrily, warning the move would mean more instability in the region and recalling its ambassadors to all three countries.

Both Hamas and its rival, the Palestinian Authority, have welcomed the recognition.

Norway was first to make its announcement Wednesday in a move co-ordinated with the other two countries.

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service has said, in the latest in a series of similar incidents involving the animals.

The vessel, Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49ft) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9am local time on Sunday.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before the boat started taking on water. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar. The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.
