Cyclone Ditwah highlights: Cyclone Ditwah has weakened into a deep depression and now lies over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast, and south coastal Andhra Pradesh, IMD Amaravati director Stella Samuel told ANI news agency. According to the latest IMD update, the storm was centered near 13.0 degree north and 80.6 degree east latitudes, and was 50 km east of Chennai, 140 k north east of Puducherry, 160 km north/north east of Cuddalore, and 170 km south/ south east of Nellore.

The weather office had predicted heavy to very heavy rain at a few places over Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Chengalpattu and Vellore districts for today.

Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tirupathur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram districts and Puducherry, it said.

Strong winds with speeds of up to 60-70 kmph, gusting to 80 kmph, are also likely over the north coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, as well as the south coastal Karaikal area.

Sri Lanka bombings: Death toll rises to 290

Sri Lanka is reeling from the worst spate of violence since its civil war ended a decade ago. A series of bomb attacks on Sunday at hotels and churches across the country killed hundreds and injured many more.

The number of people killed in Sunday’s bomb attacks across Sri Lanka has risen to 290 and the number of wounded to more than 500, police said Monday.

The nine attacks, which targeted Christian churches and hotels popular with foreigners, amounted to the deadliest violence to hit Sri Lanka since a civil war ended 10 years ago.

No one has yet claimed responsibility, but police said they had arrested 13 Sri Lankan citizens in connection with the blasts.

Curfew lifted

Earlier on Monday, authorities lifted an overnight curfew and said that they had defused an improved bomb at the international airport in the capital, Colombo.

Officials will look into possible intelligence failures, the government said, amid reports that security services ignored warnings of an imminent attack against churches.

At least 27 foreigners, including citizens from the United States, Japan and India, died in the blasts.

Germany’s Foreign Ministry said it was “working urgently” to find out if any German citizens were killed or wounded.

Over 75,000 people affected by floods

Over 75,000 people belonging to 22,823 have been affected by flash floods and heavy winds in the Northern Province after days of heavy rains. Out of those affected, over 11,000 people were evacuated to 35 safe locations as their homes were inundated due to continuous rains.

The Disaster Management Centre said that one death has been reported due to the adverse weather condition.As of Monday morning, flood waters were receding and the situation was normalizing but people were told to remain cautious as more rains were expected in the coming days, said Disaster Management Centre spokesperson Pradeep Kodippili.

The worst-affected districts were Mullaitivu, Killinochchi, Mannar, Vavuniya and Jaffna. Military and the police were involved in rescue operations while President Maithripala Sirisena directed officials to provide immediate relief to the affected people.

The Meteorology Department warned shower or thundershowers will continue to occur in Northern, Eastern and North-central provinces.Fairly heavy falls above 75mm can be expected at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa and Western provinces and in Jaffna and Mullaitivu districts.
