Musk ramps up attacks on Brazil’s top judge as X faces possible suspension, Starlink finances frozen

Tesla, SpaceX and X Corp. leader Elon Musk ramped up his online attacks on Brazilian Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes on Thursday, amid an intensifying political and legal battle between the tech billionaire and his companies, and Brazil’s highest court.

De Moraes’ court announced on Wednesday that it was ordering Musk and X Corp. to appoint a legal representative for the social media company, formerly known as Twitter, in Brazil within 24 hours, or X would face “penalty of suspension of activities” there.

A suspension of X in Brazil could cause serious business problems for the already embattled social network. Brazil has a population of more than 171 million active social media users, according to market research by Oosga.

The nation is preparing for October municipal elections. And under Brazil’s laws, social networks there have to employ someone who can receive and consider government takedown notices about political misinformation.

A remote tribe was given the internet for the first time – here’s how it’s gone

For the last eight months, a remote Brazilian tribe has been getting high-speed internet for the first time.

The Marubo people live in one of the most isolated spots on the planet and although they have contact with the outside world, the tribe has preserved a traditional way of life for centuries.

They sleep in communal huts along the Ituí River, hunt and grow their own food, talk their own language and until recently have not had access to the internet.

But Elon Musk’s satellite-internet service, Starlink, which he launched in Brazil in 2022, has changed this.

Exclusive: Musk’s SpaceX is building spy satellite network for US intelligence agency, sources say

WASHINGTON, March 16 (Reuters) – SpaceX is building a network of hundreds of spy satellites under a classified contract with a U.S. intelligence agency, five sources familiar with the program said, demonstrating deepening ties between billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s space company and national security agencies.

The network is being built by SpaceX’s Starshield business unit under a $1.8 billion contract signed in 2021 with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), an intelligence agency that manages spy satellites, the sources said.

The plans show the extent of SpaceX’s involvement in U.S. intelligence and military projects and illustrate a deeper Pentagon investment into vast, low-Earth orbiting satellite systems aimed at supporting ground forces.

If successful, the sources said the program would significantly advance the ability of the U.S. government and military to quickly spot potential targets almost anywhere on the globe.

Ukraine war: Elon Musk’s SpaceX firm bars Kyiv from using Starlink tech for drone control

SpaceX has limited Ukraine’s ability to use its satellite internet service for military purposes – after reports that Kyiv has used it to control drones.

Early in the war, Ukraine was given thousands of SpaceX Starlink dishes – which connect to satellites and help people stay connected to the internet.

But it is also said to have used the tech to target Russian positions – breaking policies set out by SpaceX.

A Ukrainian official said companies had to choose which “side” they were on.

They could join Ukraine and “the right to freedom”, or pick Russia and “its ‘right’ to kill and seize territories”, tweeted presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak.

Elon Musk turned on Starlink in Iran

On Friday, SpaceX founder, Elon Musk, turned on Starlink in Iran. Signaling in a tweet to Secretary of State Antony Blinken that he will make the satellite internet system available in Iran.

Starlink satellites are already passing over Iran where they appear as a string of lights flying in tandem. This is good news for the embattled citizens of Iran.

Disruptions on the internet were widely reported throughout Iran. Mobile internet access has been cut in the capital city of Tehran. Extremely slow speeds on broadband connections are also reported. Netblocks, the internet watchdog, announced Wednesday that access to the popular platform Instagram is also being restricted.

Starlink has just been enabled to provide satellite internet inside Iran.

Normally the activation of Starlink requires the approval of each country. In Iran, the US has authorized SpaceX to activate the service without Iran’s permission.
