TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — President Joe Biden has invited Prime Minister Naftali Bennett to Washington next week to discuss Iran as well as Israel’s relationship with the Palestinians, the White House said Wednesday.

The long-expected visit with Israel’s new prime minister will take place Aug. 26 amid tensions with the Islamic Republic and Israel’s fragile truce with militant Hamas rulers in Gaza following an 11-day war in May.

The meeting will “underscore the United States’ unwavering commitment to Israel’s security,” according to the statement from presidential spokeswoman Jen Psaki. The leaders, she said, “will discuss critical issues related to regional and global security, including Iran.”

Bennett, meanwhile, described the upcoming meeting as important. His office said Bennett and Biden “will discuss a series of diplomatic, economic and security issues, especially the Iranian nuclear program.”

The Israeli leader made no mention of the cease-fire efforts with Hamas — even as an Egyptian mediator was in the country — or pledges by the U.S. and Israel to bolster Hamas’ rival, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The meeting next week will be the first between the American and Israeli leader — and Bennett’s first diplomatic trip as prime minister — at a sensitive time for the security of the Middle East. Politically, both men want to show a steady hand at the helm of their respective governments in the wake of the Israel-Gaza war and the collapse of Afghanistan’s government on Biden’s watch.

Both nations want to put the brakes on Iran’s conduct in the region and on its nuclear program. But they diverge on the key question of reinstating the 2015 nuclear accord. Former President Donald Trump pulled America out of that agreement in 2018.

Biden campaigned on restoring the deal, with changes to address Iran’s conduct. Bennett and his predecessor, Benjamin Netanyahu, staunchly oppose the accord and have vowed that Israel will act against Iran on its own if need be.

For Bennett, strengthening Israel’s relationship with its strong ally, the U.S., is especially important as he leads a coalition government of eight parties from across the political spectrum. Under the coalition deal, Bennett, a founder of the Israeli settlement movement, will step down in 2023. Centrist Yair Lapid, now Israel’s foreign minister, will then take the top job.

For Biden, it’s a chance to change the subject from the Taliban’s blitz across Afghanistan and the collapse of the U.S.-backed government there after 20 years.

While Bennett, who leads a small hard-line party that opposes major concessions to the Palestinians, made no mention of the Palestinians, the White House did — a reflection of human rights concerns for Palestinians among some in Biden’s party.

“The visit will also be an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss efforts to advance peace, security, and prosperity for Israelis and Palestinians and the importance of working towards a more peaceful and secure future for the region,” the White House said.

There have been no substantive talks between Israel and Abbas’ government in over a decade. With relations chilly, and the Palestinians divided between rival governments, the prospects for resuming negotiations appear slim.

But Bennett has indicated he would like to improve ties and bolster the Palestinian economy. This week, Israeli authorities postponed a meeting in which hundreds of new homes in West Bank settlements were to be approved. It was unclear if the delay was the result of American pressure.

The 11-day war between Israel and militant Hamas rulers inflicted heavy damage on Gaza. Some 254 Palestinians were killed, including at least 67 children and 39 women, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Twelve civilians, including two children, were killed in Israel, along with one soldier.

A major outbreak of measles in Israel has caused one death and over a thousand cases in the last eight months, officials have revealed.

A majority of the cases were recorded in Jerusalem, including that of an 18-month-old girl who was brought last Thursday by ambulance to Shaarei Tzedek hospital without a pulse and not breathing. The doctors failed to save her life.

It was the first case of a child dying from measles in Israel since 1990. The child belonged to a Charedi sect in Jerusalem which for religious reasons do not record births of their children with any government ministry, including the health authorities, meaning they are not routinely inoculated.

Israeli children are usually inoculated for measles twice, at the age of one and then again after starting school at six. Cases have been rare in recent decades, although there were small-scale outbreaks in 2007 and 2015.

This time, however, there have been some 1,300 cases, of which over half where in the Jerusalem area.

Most Charedi rabbis are clear on the need to be inoculated but the few small groups who object appear to be the source of the latest cases in Jerusalem.

A measles outbreak in Stamford Hill, North London, has been traced to residents who caught the disease during a recent visit to Israel.

But the Israeli outbreak is not confined to the Strictly Orthodox community and there have been nearly a hundred cases in Tel Aviv alone. Doctors ascribe these to a small but persistent trend among secular parents who oppose giving their children the MMRV vaccine because of widely discredited online articles linking the vaccine to autism.

Israel’s Health Ministry began a nationwide drive this week in hospitals and family health clinics to inoculate all children.

Two days after US VP Mike Pence says Trump ‘actively considering when and how’ to fulfil his campaign pledge of moving the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, reports surface that the US president is considering announcing his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital as an interim.

US President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to announce in the coming days that the United States recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and is giving serious thought on how to fulfil his election campaign pledge to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

According to fresh information in Israel, Trump is giving greater thought to the idea due to domestic political considerations, primarily stemming from reinvigorated pressure by the Republican party and Evangelical Christians.

To that end, Trump and his staff are considering how to avoid signing for a second time the waiver that would leave the embassy in Tel Aviv.

Presidents of both the Republican and Democratic parties have renewed the waiver every six months for years, enabling them to bypass a law that requires that washington order its Israeli embassy be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Trump promised during his election campaign that he would move the US embassy “to the eternal capital of the Jewish people, Jerusalem.”

While hopes in Israel have so far been dashed that a US president would finally fulfil the embassy pledge, Trump has taken a number of steps that have constituted a departure from previous administration.

Most notably, in May Trump arrived at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, becoming the first sitting US president to visit the ancient Jewish holy site.

Close Trump associates have reportedly recommended that he make the announcement of transferring the embassy in the near future.

(Photo: AFP)

In the interim, one of the ideas currently being mooted is to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital as a gesture for Israel’s 70th independence celebrations as a first step toward the administration’s announcement of its peace initiative between Israel and the Palestinians.

Hopes were raised in Israel this week when US Vice President Mike Pence said on Tuesday that Trump is actively considering “when and how” to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Pence made the comment in remarks at Israel’s Mission to the United Nations in Queens, at an event celebrating the 70th anniversary of the United Nations’ vote calling for the establishment of a Jewish state.

“President Trump is actively considering when and how to move the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem,” stated Pence, after receiving a standing ovation from the crowd.

Officials in Jerusalem say that the Americans are currently examining the ramifications of the recognition.

American intelligence circles may caution Trump against the move, warning of the security-related ramifications that could ensue and danger that it could pose to American embassies around the world.

Rumors of Trump’s planned announcement were met with warnings from Jordan’s King Abdullah II, who said during a visit to the US that “the transfer of the American embassy to Jerusalem at this stage will have repercussions in the Palestinian, Arab and Islamic scene.”

He also added that it would “endanger the two-state solution and could be potentially exploited by terrorists to stoke anger, frustration, and desperation in order to spread their ideologies.”
