Many call the American effort to obtain either tariff parity or a reduction in the roughly $1 trillion trade deficit and 50 years of consecutive trade deficits a “trade war.”

But then what do they call the policies of the past half-century by Europe, Asia, China and others to ensure asymmetrical tariffs, pseudo-health and security trade restrictions, and large surpluses?

A trade peace? Trade fairness?

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz leaves for China on Saturday for a three-day diplomatic visit that includes meetings with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Accompanied by a high-level business delegation, the German leader is expected to address grievances over the trade deficit between the EU common market and the world’s second-largest economy.

Scholz is also expected to question China’s ties with Russia amid the Ukraine war and Beijing’s aggressiveness toward Taiwan — a self-ruled island China claims as its own.

Scholz is scheduled to meet Xi and Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing on Tuesday, the last day of his trip. This is Scholz’s second trip to China as chancellor — he completed his first visit in November 2022.

The numbers: The trade deficit in goods widened 5.7% in September to $92.2 billion as a strong dollar crimped exports. Yet a sharp decline in the trade gap since the spring is likely to help the U.S. economy post the first increase in quarterly growth since the end of last year.

The trade gap in goods rose from $87.3 billion in the prior month, the Census Bureau said. Exports fell and imports moved higher.
