“Even when I was there eight years ago, there was always a heavy debate on tariffs — on the positives and the negatives of tariffs, on the intended consequences, unintended consequences,” Gary Cohn, IBM Corp. vice chairman and Trump’s former National Economic Council director, said Tuesday on Bloomberg TV. “Look, it’s day one of a four-year administration. You don’t have to put tariffs on day one.”

During his first term as president from 2017 to 2021, Trump warred with the South Asian nation over tariffs but shared a healthy relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Closer to the end of his time in the White House, India and the United States agreed to negotiate a limited accord, in an effort to bridge their differences.

“India is open to lowering tariffs for entry of U.S. companies if that means better trade terms for Indian goods,” said one of the sources aware of the government’s thinking, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

It showed imports fell 2.3% in October from a year earlier, while China’s trade surplus rose to $95.7 billion in October, up from $81.7 billion in September.

Exports far surpassed analyst’s estimates of about 5.5% growth and outpaced September’s growth of just 2.4%. It was the fastest expansion since July 2022.

First-quarter bilateral trade totaled US$53.85 billion. China’s shipments to Russia rose 47.1% year-on-year to US$24.07 billion, while shipments from Russia were up 32.6% to US$29.77 billion, data from China’s General Administration of Customs showed.

In March alone, total bilateral trade reached US$20.07 billion, up 77% on a yearly basis, accelerating from 36.4% in the first two months, Chinese customs data showed.
