]]> CHINESE defence minister General Wei Fenghe said his visit to Moscow was a demonstration of the strong diplomatic relationship between the two countries and a warning to the United States, saying “we’ve come to support you”.

General Wei Fenghe was in to meet with Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu, in his first foreign trip since being appointed to the position. His comments have sparked fears that current tensions may escalate to .

He said: “I am visiting Russia as a new defence minister of  to show the world a high level of development of our bilateral relations and firm determination of our armed forces to strengthen strategic cooperation”

“The Chinese side has come to show  the close ties between the armed forces of China and Russia … we’ve come to support you.”

He added that China is willing to express “our common concerns and common position on important international problems at international venues as well.”

New Chinese defence minister claimed his visit to Moscow was a show of strength against the US

Mr Shoigu claimed that Wei’s visit “underlines a special character of relations between Russia and China”.

The unequivocal show of support comes days after Russia announced that it had tested a new ballistic missile capable of hitting Florida. Earlier this week it announced it will expell 60 American diplomats and close the US Consulate in St. Petersburg in a tit-for-tat response to similar measures by the US.

The United States expelled 50 Russian diplomats last month over the poisoning of Sergei Skripal in Salisbury in March.

The United Kingdom and United States have blamed Russia for the incident which which involved a military-grade Novichok nerve agent and sparked an international diplomatic confrontation. Russia strongly denies the accusations.

Tensions escalated in the days after the attack when British Defence Minister Gavin Williamson accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of attempting to “subvert, undermine and influence countries around the world”, and told him to “shut up and go away”.

It later emerged that US President Donald Trump had proposed a meeting between himself and Putin at the White House in a telephone call with the Russian premier in March.

Trump told reporters that he expected “to be seeing President Putin in the not-too-distant future”.

Sarah Huckabee-Sanders, White House spokesperson, confirmed Mr Trump had extended the invitation for a meeting, and that the White House was a possible venue, but gave no further details.

A statement released by the White House said: “As the President himself confirmed on March 20, hours after his last call with President Putin, the two had discussed a bilateral meeting in the ‘not-too-distant future’ at a number of potential venues, including the White House.”

In late March, Chinese president Xi Jinping hosted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for talks that were widely viewed as a diplomatic coup for the North Korean leader before his expected meeting with Donald Trump later this year.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed the call in a press briefing on Monday.

“As the president himself confirmed on March 20, hours after his last call with President Putin, the two had discussed a bilateral meeting in the ‘not-too-distant future’ at a number of potential venues, including the White House,” Sanders said. The administration had no further comment on the matter, she said.

The Kremlin’s foreign policy aide, Yuri Ushakov, told reporters on Monday that Trump had suggested meeting at his official presidential residence and workplace in the US capital: “When our presidents spoke on the phone, Trump suggested having the meeting in Washington at the White House,” Ushakov said. “This is quite an interesting, positive idea,” he added.

Underlying tensions

Planning for the visit was interrupted by the expulsion of Russian diplomats from the US and other Western states following the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in England. The US has supported the UK’s claim that Russia was responsible for the poisoning with a military-grade nerve agent. Russia denies the accusation.

Tensions also continue with the US investigation into alleged meddling by Russia in the 2016 presidential election.

“I hope the Americans won’t abandon their proposal to discuss the possibility of holding the summit,” Ushakov said on Monday. “There was no time for discussion and there wasn’t even anyone to discuss it with,” Ushakov said, adding he hoped that “serious and constructive dialogue” could now start.

Trump met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the White House last May. The talks were in preparation for Trump’s meeting with Putin, which took place at the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg in July 2017.

Putin last visited the White House in November 2001 when he met former President George W. Bush.
