(CNN) A 7.0 preliminary magnitude earthquake has struck Japan off the coast of Ishinomaki, a city located just 65 miles (104 km) from Fukushima, the site of a devastating 9.0 magnitude quake 10 years ago.

A little more than a month after a 7.5 earthquake struck Papua New Guinea, a 6.9 magnitude tremor occurred near the coast and triggered a tsunami warning earlier today.

Papua New Guinea’s location within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped string of volcanoes along the edges of the Pacific Ocean, makes seismic activity common.

According to National Geographic, 90 percent of all earthquakes occur in the Ring of Fire and 75 percent of the world’s active volcanoes are located in that region.

Although no damage was reported, resort goers near where the quake struck felt the shaking and ran out of buildings in fear of collapse.

“We felt the earthquake, everything was moving so we went out of the building,” May Dovon, a receptionist at the Rapopo Plantation Resort told The Guardian. “Nothing was damaged.”

The earthquake struck around 100 miles southwest of the town of Rabaul on New Britain Island.

According to the Guardian, the area where the quake was felt was much remote than where the earlier 7.5 quake struck.

The latest earthquake triggered a tsunami warning that was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center which went out to all coastlines located within 200 miles of the epicenter of the earthquake.

The tsunami warning was later called off, but while no damage has been reported for this quake the country is still recovering from the earlier quake.

The February earthquake caused major landslides, damaged water supplies and killed 100 people.

A powerful magnitude-7.9 earthquake hit Alaska early today, sending tsunami warnings across the west coast of North America, from Alaska to Canada and the United States (Washington, Oregon, and California).

Those tsunami warnings are officially canceled after further information and analysis were collated by seismographs across Alaska by the National Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska and the USGS. Alaska did, however, experience minor tsunami waves of approximately 1 foot.

The concern for a tsunami was rooted in the location of the earthquake, which struck off the coast of Alaska in the Gulf of Alaska. The magnitude 7.9-earthquake epicenter was located 175 miles to the southeast of Kodiak, Alaska and deep underwater. The concern was that movement along a fault, which caused this earthquake, would shift water upward and cause a large wave to emanate from the location of the earthquake.

How Do Tsunamis Form Like The One In Alaska Today

You can “model” this scenario in the bathtub or while swimming. Place both of your hands side by side and palm up about 6 inches below the surface of the water. If you suddenly move one hand down and the other hand up, you’ll notice you create a wave that radiates from your hands. That is the same movement which geophysicists fear will create a deadly tsunami.

Thankfully, this particular earthquake, which was centered 15 miles below the surface of the Earth, did not produce a significant tsunami due to the relative motion along the fault which we will discuss below. While the tsunami threat is significantly diminished, officials are warning residents across California, Oregon, and Washington to limit their exposure to the beach for the rest of the day. This is because while there may not be a tsunami, there could be unpredictable currents along the coastlines.

Immediately after the powerful earthquake hit Alaska, fishermen, and residents along coastal Alaska fled to higher ground, evacuating entire towns as tsunami warnings blared over sirens. Police warned that this was not a drill over loudspeakers as people woke from their homes at 1am today. Residents of Kodiak, Alaska went to inland emergency shelters, which opened shortly after the earthquake.

While the earthquake was sufficiently powerful enough to destroy infrastructure, at a magnitude of 7.9, the fact that it was offshore and far away from coastal communities meant little actual damage. In addition, this particular earthquake did not produce a tsunami due to the relative direction of the slippage between the two plates. In this instance, the movement which produced the earthquake was along a strike-slip fault. Using the analogy before with two hands, palm up, 6 inches below the surface of the water. This time, instead of moving one hand up and one hand down, move one hand forward and one hand backward. You’ll notice this doesn’t produce the offset which triggers a wave. This type of fault movement is less dangerous for earthquakes underwater as they are significantly less likely to produce a large tsunami than, for instance, thrust fault movement.

While this tsunami warning wound up not producing a tsunami, the potential for damage and destruction from this powerful of an earthquake is significant. In 2011 a magnitude-9.1 earthquake off the coast of Japan killed more than 20,000 people, caused widespread infrastructure damage, and destroyed nuclear reactors.

Geology Behind The Alaska Earthquake

The earthquake Alaska experienced this morning is along the Aleutian island arc, the chain of islands that extends to the west of Alaska. This island chain marks the location where the Pacific plate is subducting underneath the North American Plate. This subduction causes volcanoes to appear along this boundary and produces the deep Aleutian Trench. The Pacific Plate continues today to be pushed northwest at a rate of approximately 60 millimeters per year.

This subduction zone is the site of the recent earthquake in Alaska. While this area is known for major thrusting movements, thankfully this particular earthquake was a result of strike-slip movement. This is due to transform motion between the two plates as they jostle against one another. The Aleutian Island chain is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, whereby the Pacific Plate is subducting underneath continental crust in a giant arc from the southern tip of South America, northward, and south to the southwest Pacific.

As long as the Pacific Ocean continues to expand at the East Pacific Rise, we will see earthquakes and volcanic activity along the coasts of the Pacific Ocean. The East Pacific Rise spreading is very generally speaking the root cause for everything from the Mount St. Helens eruption to the deadly Japan earthquake of 2011.  In Alaska alone, there have been 12 large earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 or greater since 1900. These large earthquakes are often prone to produce tsunamis and will undoubtedly continue into the future.

Hence the requirement for advanced real-time monitoring of seismic activity. Federal agencies, the United States Geological Survey, in combination with the National Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska, do an excellent job at early detection and warning so residents will have as much time as possible to prepare and evacuate if there is a devastating earthquake and/or tsunami.

As of Friday evening, the National Emergency Committee said 58 had died in the earthquake, according to Mexico’s civil defense chief Luis Felipe Puente.

Hardest hit were southern states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, but tremors from the temblor that hit just before 1 a.m. ET were felt 460 miles away in Mexico City. Thousands of pajama-clad residents fled into the streets to escape their shaking houses.

This quake, which prompted warnings of possible tsunami waves up to 10 feet high, was stronger than the 1985 tremor that killed more than 5,000 people in Mexico’s capital, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said.

But with an epicenter 40 miles off the country’s coast, the first reports were that Mexico City had largely been spared.

It was a different story in Oaxaca, where Gov. Alejandro Murat reported at least 45 fatalities. More deaths were reported in the Chiapas and Tabasco states, including three children, according to officials.

One child in Tabasco was killed by a collapsing wall, the state’s Gov. Arturo Nunez said. Also, a baby at a hospital died when the building lost power.

The Mexican president said there had been at least 62 aftershocks and warned his countrymen to brace themselves for one that could hit 7.2 on the Richer scale could hit in the next 24 hours.

In the immediate aftermath of the quake, more than homes and businesses lost power, Peña Nieto said. Within hours, electricity had been restored to 800,000 of them.

In Chiapas, the state closest to the offshore epicenter, there were reports some buildings had been badly damaged. Its governor, Manuel Velasco Coello, said on Facebook that around 1,000 army troops were helping with the rescue and recovery effort.

Several towns that were in danger of being hit by the tsunami waves were evacuated, Coello said.

In Mexico City, survivors described how they were shaken awake by the quake.

“I felt the shaking and knew it was an earthquake,” said Mark Van Eps, a 39-year-old musician from Los Angeles who was vacationing in Mexico City. “There was an earthquake alarm shortly after that.”

“The street and buildings started swaying considerably,” said Harry Neville-Towle, a 30-year-old art director visiting from Sydney, Australia. “All the cars started pulling over and people started coming out of their houses … People were afraid to go back inside for at least an hour, as we were all unsure of whether their might be an aftershock.”

Classes were canceled in Mexico City and several other states so that officials could make sure the buildings were structurally sound, the president said on Twitter.

Meanwhile, small tsunami waves of 3.3 feet washed ashore the city of Salina Cruz while 2.3-foot waves were measured at the resort town of Huatulco, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The Mexican government agency warned that waves of up to 10 feet could hit other parts of the country.

“We are waiting for a while to see if this is going to happen or not,” Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong told Mexican broadcaster Televisa.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially estimated the magnitude at 8.0 before revising it to 8.1. The Mexican Seismological Agency rated it at magnitude 8.4.

In neighboring Guatemala, President Jimmy Morales said there had been some damage and unconfirmed reports that one person had died.

Meanwhile, Mexico was bracing for another natural emergency on the other side of the country.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Katia was likely to strike the Gulf coast in the state of Veracruz early Saturday as a Category 2 storm that could bring life-threatening floods.

A magnitude 8.4 earthquake has been reported off the coast of Mexico, with residents told to evacuate and a tsunami warning issued for the region and neighbouring countries.

The quake struck 200km south-west of the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez just after midnight on Thursday local time, and was said to be the strongest earthquake to hit the country since 1985, according to the civil protection agency.

The Pacific tsunami warning centre said hazardous waves could be possible “within the next three hours” for the coasts of Mexico, Guatemala, El Savador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras and Ecuador.

In an updated warning, the centre predicted waves over 3m for parts of the Mexican coast, and waves between 0.3 and 1 metres for the Cook Islands, Ecuador, Fiji, rench Polynesia, Guatemala and Kiribati.

Initial waves recorded arriving on the coast at the Mexican cities of Salina Cruz, Puerto Madero and Huatulco were between 0.3 and 0.7 metres over tide level.

Waves below 0.3 metres were forecast for countries as far as Australia, Japan and Vietnam.

The tsunami threat to Hawaii was still under evaluation, said the warning centre.

In Mexico, civil protection officials were checking for damage in Chiapas, but the quake was so powerful that it frightened residents in Mexico City more than 1,000 kms (650 miles) away. People fled apartment buildings, often in their pyjamas, and gathered in groups in the street.

Around midnight buildings swayed strongly for more than minute, loosening light fixtures from ceilings.

Rodrigo Soberanes, who lives near San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, told the Associated Press his house “moved like chewing gum” with the quake.

Civil Defense in Chiapas said on its Twitter account that its personnel were in the streets aiding people and warned residents to prepare for aftershocks.

In Mexico City, helicopters crisscrossed the sky with spotlights. Some neighbourhoods had electricity while others were in darkness.

The Mexican seismological authority reported a series of magnitude 6 aftershocks.
