In Hawaii, a 5.7-foot tsunami wave amplitude was reported in Kahului, with a 4.9-foot wave in Hilo, a 4-foot wave in Haleiwa and a 3.9-foot wave at Hanalei, sending thousands of people fleeing to higher ground, Fox Weather reported Wednesday morning New York time.

The quake hit an area about 85 miles east of Kamchatsky, on the southeastern coast of the Russian peninsula, at 1:24 p.m. Hawaiian Time, according to officials. It’s one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded — and the most powerful the world has seen in 14 years.

Seven airports, including Sam Ratulangi international airport in Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province, remained closed after Tuesday’s eruption, the second in two weeks. Schools were shut to protect children from volcanic ash.

The volcano is on tiny Ruang Island, part of the Sitaro islands chain.

The Indonesian geological agency urged people to stay at least 4 miles from the volcano’s crater. It warned people on nearby Tagulandang Island, the closest to the volcano, of possible super-heated volcanic clouds from a further eruption and a tsunami if the mountain’s volcanic dome collapses into the sea.

Baku, AZERTAC

A volcanic eruption in Tonga that triggered a tsunami was hundreds of times more powerful than the atomic bomb the US dropped on Hiroshima during World War Two, Nasa says, according to BBC.

The eruption “obliterated” a volcanic island north of the Tongan capital Nuku’alofa, the agency said.

Tonga says more than four-fifths of the population has been affected by the tsunami and falling ash.

Three people were confirmed killed in the tsunami last week.

Before the eruption, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcanic island was two separate islands joined by new land formed in 2015.

Nasa says the eruption was so powerful all the new land is gone, along with “large chunks” of the two older islands.

The widespread emission of volcanic ash, gases and particles from the eruption has proven to be a massive challenge for Tongan officials.

In the immediate aftermath of the eruption and tsunami, there were fears that water sources had been polluted by the thick blanket of ash, increasing the risk of diseases like cholera and diarrhea. However, officials noted that testing in recent days had cleared ground water and rainwater as safe to drink.

But fine volcanic ash and emissions continue to pose a public health risk. Exposure could potentially cause breathing difficulties, affect the cardiovascular system, and irritate the lungs, eyes and skin.

The Red Cross has been responding to the Tonga tsunami, which has badly affected all 36 of its Pacific islands after the volcanic eruption on Saturday, 15 January 2022.

After repeated flare-ups, the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano finally erupted in the early hours of Saturday, 15 January.

The underwater blast lasted eight minutes, sending ash 60,000 feet into the sky in a 5km plume.

The impact was felt as far away as Peru, with ‘violent’ waves reaching 6,200 miles across the Pacific, spilling thousands of oil barrels into Peruvian waters.

Just 64km south of the volcano, the small Pacific Island country of Tonga was slammed by a tsunami wave of 1.2 metres.

The impact immediately severed communication lines, cutting off the islands from the rest of the world.

As a result, the true extent of the damage remains unknown. But overhead images show the islands blanketed in layers of volcanic ash. In coastal areas, trees were ripped down by the waves and buildings torn apart.

Early reports from the Tongan government say that 84% of the population has been directly affected and 99% of people have been impacted in some way.

Two islands have been evacuated due to the total destruction of all homes.

It has been reported that five people have lost their lives.

An unfolding situation: ‘Devastation in Tonga could be immense’
So far, dust and ash has hampered relief efforts.

But the Red Cross and International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) have been working round the clock to reach people, since the volcanic eruption.

Staff and volunteers have been travelling across the 36 islands, alongside authorities, to provide humanitarian aid to those worst affected. Katie Greenwood, IFRC’s Pacific Head of Delegation, says:

From what little updates we have, the scale of the devastation could be immense – especially for outer lying islands. But local Red Cross teams are well place to respond quickly to emergencies like this.

“Trained Tonga Red Cross teams will be on the ground supporting evacuations in coordination with public authorities, providing first aid if needed, and distributing prepositioned relief supplies.”

Although the picture is still unclear, there are fears that communities may not have access to safe and clean drinking water due to pollution from the ashfall and salt water from the Tsunami.

Shelter is also a concern, particularly for those communities near the coastline.

“The Red Cross currently has enough relief supplies in the country to support 1,200 households with essential items such as tarpaulins, blankets, kitchen sets, shelter tool kits and hygiene kits,” Katie continues.

“Red Cross societies and the IFRC will be on-hand to replenish supplies where needed.

“We are determined to provide the extra resources and support they may need in the face of such a devastating disaster,” Katie said.

Finding family and friends in Tonga
With communication lines down, people around the world have been unable to check on the welfare of family and friends in Tonga.

“One of the other priorities for the Tonga Red Cross will be to work with our Movement partner, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to restore family links,” Katie says.

“This will help people from all over the world try and find out if their family and friends in Tonga are safe and well.”

Supporting Red Cross societies around the world
The British Red Cross is able to support other Red Cross societies through regular gifts from our supporters.

If that’s something you do already, thank you. If not and you’d like to support our work in this way, sign up today.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. A tsunami threat had been issued but the danger has passed.

A powerful magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was felt in Miami, and police said some buildings were being evacuated in the city.

The Miami Police Department said in a tweet that it was assisting firefighters with reports of vibrations in the Brickell and downtown areas. There were no reports of injuries.

The police department in Miami later said that the Brickell area, which had seen some buildings evacuated earlier, was secure and there were no mandatory evacuations. Traffic and public transportation were resuming as normal, police said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had issued a tsunami threat for Belize, Cuba, Honduras, Mexico, the Cayman Islands, and Jamaica, with waves of up to 3 feet, but later said that the danger had passed.

In Santiago in eastern Cuba, Belkis Guerrero, who works in a Roman Catholic cultural center in the center of that city, told The Associated Press that “we were all sitting and we felt the chairs move” and that “we heard the noise of everything moving around.”

Tim Redell, who was visiting Jamaica on business, told NBC News that there were around 180 people there for a business conference in a giant ballroom and “the floor started shaking.” They evacuated the building, Redell said.

The Stephen P. Clark Center, which houses government offices for Miami-Dade County, was one of the buildings evacuated as a precaution.

The city had seen an influx of media and sports figures as it gears up for the Super Bowl on Sunday. The NFL said in a statement that the quake had not affected any of the sanctioned Super Bowl events at the Hard Rock Stadium and other venues around Miami.

The quake was centered about 86 miles northwest of Montego Bay, Jamaica, and 87 miles west-southwest of Niquero, Cuba. It hit at 2:10 p.m. and the epicenter was 6 miles beneath the surface.

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck off northwestern Japan on Tuesday, triggering a two-hour tsunami advisory for three prefectures in the region.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck Tuesday night at 10:22, or 9:22 a.m. EDT, 30 miles southwest of Sakata and more than 6 miles below the surface. Sakata is about 200 miles north of Tokyo.

Officials in Murakami, a city of 60,000 people in Niigata Prefecture, told Japan’s Kyodo news service the quake rumbled for about a minute.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said several minor injuries were reported in Niigata and Yamagata, but no serious ones. He urged residents to be prepared for possible aftershocks.

City officials were moving coastal residents to higher ground as a precaution, Tsuruoka city crisis management official Takehiko Takahashi said.

Some train lines suspended operations, and Tohoku Electric said about 8,200 homes and businesses were without power. No problems were reported at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, a nuclear plant in the region.

NHK TV station showed broken glasses and dishes scattered on the floor of a bar in Tsuruoka after customers rushed out, leaving behind their half-eaten food on the counter.

The tsunami advisory was for Yamagata, Niigata and Ishikawa prefectures. Japan Meteorological Agency said the first small wave of tsunami reached Awashima Island in Niigata Prefecture at 11:05 p.m. The wave reached Sakata in Yamagata Prefecture a short time later before the tsunami advisory was lifted.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in Japan, and the coastal region in Niigata has been shaken by major quakes in the past. A magnitude 6.6 quake in 2007 killed 11 people and injured 1,000.

In 2011, Japan was rocked by the magnitude 9.0 Great East Japan Earthquake. It triggered a massive tsunami that flooded more than 200 square miles of coastal land. More than 15,000 died in the disaster, and two nuclear power plants were severely damaged and have not been in operation since.

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Sulawesi island Friday, prompting tsunami warnings that were later lifted.

The strong quake was centered at a depth of 10.5 miles below the surface and hit near a cluster of islands off the east coast of Central Sulawesi, according to the United States Geological Survey.

About 310,000 people were within a 62-mile radius of the earthquake’s center, according to the Global Disaster and Alert Coordination System. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency warned of a possible tsunami after the quake, which struck at 6:40 p.m. local time, but said at about 8 p.m. that the threat was over.

Earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions are common in Indonesia due to its proximity to the seismically-active Pacific “Ring of Fire.”

A 7.5-magnitude quake that hit the opposite side of Sulawesi last year, triggering a tsunami, killed more than 4,000 people and devastated the city of Palu. Although the city is far from the epicenter of Friday’s quake, people there felt it, and ran into the streets panicking, The Associated Press reported.
