WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump continued to turn attention to the media in the aftermath of the spate of suspected mail bombs sent to CNN and some of his prominent critics, this time complaining that the cable news network was casting blame on him.

“Funny how lowly rated CNN, and others, can criticize me at will, even blaming me for the current spate of Bombs and ridiculously comparing this to September 11th and the Oklahoma City bombing, yet when I criticize them they go wild and scream, ‘it’s just not Presidential,’” he tweeted.

His CNN bashing is not unusual, nor is it all that surprising when it was sent: 3:14 a.m.

But Trump’s response to the discovery of the 10 suspicious packages, including those intended for former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has been in large part another way to air his grievances about the way he and his administration have been covered. On Thursday at the White House, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders complained that 90% of coverage of the president is negative, while calling it “ridiculous” to suggest that Trump’s rhetoric was in some way responsible for the mailing of the threatening packages.

Trump and his media allies have pointed to the overheated rhetoric of those on the left, including the hounding of members of the administration as they eat at D.C. restaurants.

As events were unfolding on Wednesday, including the evacuation of CNN’s headquarters in New York, CNN President Jeff Zucker said that “there is a total and complete lack of understanding at the White House about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media.”

Ohio Governor John Kasich, a Republican who has been a Trump critic, said that the president has a special responsibility with his command of the bully pulpit.

“He’s not capable of being a unifier,” Kasich told CNN. “In fact, I’ve become convinced he doesn’t know how to accept personal responsibility and always finds somebody else to blame.”

He cited Trump’s overheated rhetoric at rallies.

Kasich said, “When you get into a place and the crowd gets revved up, there’s always somebody on the edge that might do something very stupid. And we … now have a heightened sense of threats and panic and ‘The caravan is coming and they are going to be in your home,’ and all of this stuff, and you rev people up, and what happens? Someone out there who is unstable does something crazy. That is what I think we are seeing here.”

The White House has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Washington after the new year, setting up another high stakes summit days after President Trump’s national security advisor said its interference didn’t change the outcome of the election.

National Security Advisor John Bolton said Friday the White House has formally invited Putin to visit returning to an idea that was put on hold in July amid anger in the U.S. over the prospect of such a summit.

He spoke following his own visit to Moscow, where he said Russian election interference was ‘objectionable’ and had contributed to animosity in the bilateral relationship.

‘What the meddling did was create distrust and animosity within the United States, and particularly made it almost impossible for two years for the United States and Russia to make any progress,’ Bolton said. ‘That’s a huge loss for both countries, particularly for Russia,’ he added. ‘So it’s a lesson I think: Don’t mess with American elections.’

Trump also said this week he would probably meet Putin in Paris next month. ‘It’s being discussed right now,’ he said. But the certainty of the information was undercut when he inaccurately referred to Bolton as ‘Mike Bolton’ when discussing it.

‘I think we probably will. It hasn’t been set up yet but it probably will be,’ he said. Such a meeting would occur at the 100th anniversary of the World War I armistice in Paris.

The summit would put the two leaders together after the outcome of the 2018 midterm elections is determined, well into the second year of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, which has led to the indictment of 13 Russians accused of setting up cutouts, fake Facebook ads, spreading disinformation, and other efforts meant to sow divisions and interfere in the elections.

U.S. Intelligence also included Russia’s military intelligence hacked Democratic emails including those of Hillary Clinton’s campaign chair, during the elections.

Trump held a summit with Putin in Helsinki, the Finnish capital, and then issued Putin an invitation to visit Washington in the autumn. But that was postponed after Trump faced allegations of cozying up to the Kremlin.

‘We have invited President Putin to Washington,’ Bolton said at a news conference during a visit to ex-Soviet Georgia, days after meeting Putin and senior security officials in Moscow.

Bolton said he gave Putin an invitation to visit next year during his trip to Moscow, U.S. broadcaster RFE/RL reported.

It was not immediately clear if Putin had accepted the invitation. Putin last held a meeting with a U.S. president on American soil in 2015 when he met Barack Obama on the sidelines of a U.N. General Assembly.

Trump’s earlier invitation to Putin sparked an outcry in Washington, including from Republican lawmakers who argued that Putin was an adversary not worthy of a White House visit.

Trump has said it is in U.S. interests to establish a solid working relationship with Putin.

Bolton said that the Paris meeting would be brief.

In his earlier comments in Moscow, Bolton argued that the effort to interfere on its own was problematic.

“it’s the effort alone to interfere in our elections that are objectionable.

“The fact was that the outcome would have been the same by all the evidence we have,” Bolton said following talks with Putin.

A commentary released by the North’s Korean Central News Agency framed Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s recent call for pressure, not dialogue, to make Pyongyang change its behavior as a ploy to attain his political aims.

“Japan’s such rackets inciting the tension of the Korean peninsula is a suicidal deed that will bring nuclear clouds to the Japanese archipelago,” it said.

“No one knows when the touch-and-go situation will lead to a nuclear war, but if so, the Japanese archipelago will be engulfed in flames in a moment. This is too self-evident,” the commentary added.

In his address at the U.N. General Assembly last month, Abe urged all U.N. member states to block North Korea’s access to “the goods, funds, people and technology” necessary for its weapons programs.

“We must make North Korea abandon all nuclear and ballistic missile programs in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner. What is needed to do that is not dialogue, but pressure,” he said.

Millions of young men and 1.22 million women said they wanted sign up to counter the U.S. since Friday, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported.

Pyongyang has previously claimed that North Koreans have volunteered to join the military as part of propaganda campaigns to boost solidarity, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.

China, Pyongyang’s most important ally, on Thursday ordered North Korean companies in the country and joint ventures with Chinese firms to close within 120 days of the passing of the latest round of U.N. sanctions on Sept. 12.

The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to ban North Korean textile exports and cap fuel supplies following the North’s sixth nuclear test earlier this month.

The North Korean military enlistment claims came after Kim issued a statement Friday warning: “I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged U.S. dotard with fire.”

The North Korean leader spoke out after Trump told the U.N. General Assembly in New York that if “forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea.”

Malaysia banned its citizens from traveling to North Korea until further notice on Thursday, citing Pyongyang’s recent missile tests. Malaysia is one of the reclusive nation’s few diplomatic partners.

It came amid increasing diplomatic pressure on North Korea, after the country launched two intercontinental ballistic missiles, flew midrange missiles over Japan and conducted its sixth and largest nuclear test.
