Israeli PM Netanyahu travels to Washington to meet with Biden, Congress

July 22 (UPI) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will arrive in Washington on Monday for talks with the Biden administration and address a joint session of the House and Senate on Wednesday.

The visit comes at a tenuous time in Israel, which is at war with Hamas in Gaza and taking fire from other fronts, and the United States with President Joe Biden officially ending his re-election bid on Sunday.

Biden has given strong support for Israel in defending itself against Hamas since that war started in October but has also strongly criticized Netanyahu for his handling of the war and the mounting deaths of Palestinian civilians.

While Israel officially has not weighed in on U.S. politics, Netanyahu grew closeto Donald Trump as he moved the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and implemented other pro-Israeli policies, such as recognizing its annexation of the Golan Heights. He also had a chilly relationship with Democratic President Barack Obama, whom Biden served as vice president under.

Ukraine war: Zelensky’s visit shows neither Ukraine nor US want peace, Russia says Published

Russia has strongly criticised the visit to Washington by Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, accusing the US of fighting an indirect war against it.

President Joe Biden has pledged $1.85bn (£1.45bn) of military aid for Ukraine – including an advanced missile system to help guard against Russian attacks.

In a defiant address to US lawmakers, Mr Zelensky welcomed the assistance.

But Russia’s US ambassador said these “provocative actions” would lead to an escalation with severe consequences.

Anatoly Antonov told Russian state media that Moscow was “trying to appeal to common sense at all levels”, but talk of delivering the Patriot missile system to Kyiv was “deeply disturbing”.

Patriot missiles are capable, effective and expensive. The White House says they will help defend Ukrainians against “Russia’s barbaric attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure”.

Moscow has complained that no calls for peace were heard during President Zelensky’s trip to Washington – with spokesman Dmitry Peskov describing this as proof that the US was fighting a proxy war with Russia.

Bill protecting same-sex, interracial unions clears Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House gave final approval Thursday to legislation protecting same-sex marriages, a monumental step in a decadeslong battle for nationwide recognition of those unions that reflects a stark turnaround in societal attitudes.

President Joe Biden is expected to promptly sign the measure, which requires all states to recognize same-sex marriages. It is a relief for hundreds of thousands of couples who have married since the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision that legalized those marriages and have worried about what would happen if the ruling were overturned.

The bipartisan legislation, which passed 258-169 with almost 40 Republican votes, would also protect interracial unions by requiring states to recognize legal marriages regardless of “sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin.” After months of negotiations, the Senate passed the bill last week with 12 Republican votes.

US election: Control of Congress hangs in balance after midterms

Republicans and Democrats are in a tight race for control of the US Congress, a day after the midterms.

With votes still being counted, Republicans are favourites to win the House of Representatives, but the fight for the Senate is on a knife-edge.

Democrats have gained a key Senate seat in Pennsylvania, but two other contests remain too close and one is heading for a run-off vote next month.

The economy and abortion were the biggest concerns for voters.

Though this should have benefitted Republicans, they have not seen the “red wave” of victories they had hoped for.

The US Congress is made up of two parts – the House of Representatives and the Senate. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate were up for grabs. Members of the House represent their local populations and Senators represent the interests of their states.
