The 9-0 decision rejects that members of a majority group must show “background circumstances” in addition to the normal requirements to prove a claim under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.

“We conclude that Title VII does not impose such a heightened standard on majority-group plaintiffs,” Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, former President Biden’s sole appointee to the court, wrote for the court.

Marlean Ames, who worked for the Ohio Department of Youth Services for two decades, sued under the landmark law over claims she was passed over for a promotion and demoted in favor of gay colleagues.

Ames appealed to the Supreme Court after lower judges ruled in favor of Ohio, finding Ames hadn’t shown proven “background circumstances” that indicate hers is the unusual case where an employer is discriminating against the majority.

A two-paragraph Supreme Court order is upending the lives of some 350,000 Venezuelan migrants who have been allowed to live and work in the U.S. with special legal protection from deportation.

The court’s order Monday allows the Trump administration to strip Temporary Protected Status from the group of hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans as a legal case on the matter continues.

Attorneys representing the TPS holders said the Supreme Court’s brief order raises questions, including exactly when the 350,000 Venezuelans will lose their legal protections.

WASHINGTON — Conservative members of the Supreme Court on Wednesday leaned toward allowing Oklahoma to approve the first-ever religious public charter school in a case that could weaken the separation of church and state.

While several conservative justices expressed support for the school’s arguments, Chief Justice John Roberts emerged during the more than two-hour argument as a potentially decisive vote.

There is the possibility of a 4-4 split, as one justice, conservative Amy Coney Barrett, is not participating. That outcome would preserve an Oklahoma Supreme Court ruling that blocked the proposed school.

The Supreme Court released three rulings on Thursday, one of which was the behemoth 6-3 decision to throw out affirmative action in higher education; the other was a ruling about a trademark infringement case. The final is an important, but somewhat quieter, ruling that strengthens legal protections for people of faith in the workforce.

In a 9-0 decision in the case Groff v. DeJoy, the Supreme Court clarified the precedent used to decide religious accommodations in the workplace, expanding them and sending this case back to the lower courts in light of the ruling.

In the 1977 ruling Trans World Airlines v. Hardison, the court said employers need not make religious accommodations for an employee should doing so impose even a small burden on the employer, or as Title VII says, imposes an “undue hardship.” The justices felt this language was unclear.

The US Supreme Court has struck down US President Joe Biden’s proposal to wipe out billions in student debt.

The 6-3 ruling effectively cancels the plan, which would have forgiven about $10,000 (£7,800) per borrower – and up to $20,000 in some cases.

But the plan has been in limbo since some conservative states sued, arguing the president overstepped his authority. The Supreme Court agreed.

The decision affects the loans of more than 40 million Americans.

In the wake of the decision, US media reported that President Biden is expected to announce new actions to protect borrowers later on Friday. In a statement, Mr Biden said that “the fight is not over” and that he believed that the ruling was “wrong”.

The total federal student debt has more than tripled over the past 15 years, rising from about $500bn in 2007 to $1.6tn today.
