A magnitude 6.7 earthquake that struck off the coast of Taiwan early on Wednesday rattled buildings and roused people from their sleep, leaving one injured and causing a half-constructed bridge in the island’s east to collapse.

Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes as it lies near the junction of two tectonic plates. It does not issue tsunami warnings unless a quake registers at more than magnitude 7.0.

The US Geological Survey initially estimated the 1:41am (1741 GMT Tuesday) quake to be magnitude 6.9, but downgraded it to 6.6 before finally assessing it back up to 6.7.

It also revised the depth from an initial 10 kilometres (six miles) to 24km.

The quake hit off Taiwan’s east coast — near the island’s scenic tourist city Hualien — but was felt over much of the island.

Government-issued alerts sent people’s cell phones blaring, and social media lit up with people posting their reactions on being woken up.

“The chandelier on my ceiling shook for more than three minutes and didn’t stop,” local reporter Chao Li wrote on Facebook.

“It’s shaking so much, it scares people to death,” he said in an accompanying video.

An AFP reporter also felt their building in Taipei’s Zhongshan district shake a few minutes just after 1:41am.

Local media on Wednesday ran footage from grocery stores that showed items flying off the shelves when the quake hit.

“It’s a pretty good-sized quake,” a U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist said. The temblor struck 4.7 miles deep, causing at least six aftershocks, including two with a magnitude of 5.4.

A preliminary 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck a remote part of western Nevada early Friday morning, with people from Salt Lake City, Utah, to California’s Central Valley reporting they felt it.

The temblor occurred around 4 a.m. near the California border, in an isolated part of Nevada near Tonopah, about 120 miles southeast of Carson City, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The initial quake struck about 4.7 miles deep, the USGS said, causing at least six aftershocks, including two with a magnitude of around 5.4.

“It’s a pretty good-sized quake,” USGS geophysicist Randy Baldwin told NBC News on Friday morning. “It’s hard to say whether there will be any damage.”

“It’s a pretty remote area, but it’s an active area,” Baldwin said. “There are faults crisscrossing this entire area.”

Footage from the scene showed mothers dressed in nightgowns hugging their newborn babies in a car park as they evacuated a damaged maternity hospital amid freezing temperatures.

The women, newborn babies, and incubators were being moved to a new location with the help of the army.

In Zagreb, people fled apartments and took to the streets while parts of the capital experienced electricity cuts. A church bell tower was damaged and some buildings collapsed, Reuters news agency reported.

Several fires were also reported. Residents shared photos of belongings falling off shelves, broken bottles, and glass inside homes.

Officials first said a 15-year-old was killed, but doctors later said she was in critical condition and they were fighting to save her life. They gave no immediate details on the extent of other injuries.

‘Complex situation’

Croatia’s Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic issued an appeal on Twitter for people in the streets to keep a social distance from each other as the country struggles to contain the spread of the coronavirus. So far, Croatia has confirmed 206 cases of the virus and one death.

Up to five people are allowed to be together while keeping distance.

The prime minister urged the citizens to remain calm and stay outside their homes in the central parts of Zagreb, which sustained the most damage.

“We have two parallel crises that contradict each other,” Plenkovic, the prime minister, said after an emergency meeting of Croatia’s top officials.

Al Jazeera Balkans’s Mirna Brekalo reporting from Zagreb said some residents have gathered in a local park, to protect themselves from potential aftershocks.

“In these situations of increased fear, it’s understandable that some people aren’t currently thinking about the coronavirus, which creates an additional problem for the whole situation,” Brekalo said.

Croatian soldiers wearing masks and carrying shovels could be seen helping efforts to clear the damage on the streets of Zagreb.

Top officials toured the damaged areas as some citizens criticized city authorities over the poor states of buildings in the old part of the city, some of which date back to the 19th century.

“We will try to clear the streets as soon as possible,” Plenkovic said. “Stay outside your homes and keep distance.”

Interior Minister Bozinovic said the situation was complicated by the restrictive virus-related measures in place.

“There are rules for when there is an earthquake, but when there is an earthquake at the same time when there is a global pandemic, then it’s a much more complex situation,” Bozinovic told the state HINA news agency.

A HUGE earthquake has hit off the coast of Canada near Port Hardy on the west coast of the country, according to local reports.

A strong quake that measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, has struck off the coast of Canada, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake hit around 177km off Port Hardy which is in British Colombia on Christmas Eve.

The tremor was located around 500km north of Vancouver on the west coast of the country.

The quake hit at around 7.35pm local time (12.36am GMT).

The depth was recorded at around one to five kilometres.

There have so far been no reports of damage or injuries from the earthquake.

Port Hardy has a population of 4,132.

The district is located on the northeastern tip of Vancouver island.

It comes as a string of earthquakes struck the northeastern end of Vancouver Island on December 23.

Earthquakes Canada said the first quake measured 5.1, the second 5.6 and the third 5.8.

Seismologist Andrew Schaeffer of Earthquakes Canada said a number of smaller aftershocks came along with the larger quakes.

He also said no one came forward and said they had felt the quakes.

He added: “You’d have to be ready and waiting and expecting it to feel it.

“It would be pretty hard to distinguish it from a big truck driving by a few hundred metres away.”

The region is apparently a hot spot for quakes.

A 7.1-magnitude quake struck the area near Ternate city of North Maluku province of Indonesia early November 15.

Jakarta (VNA) – A 7.1-magnitude quake struck the area near Ternate city of North Maluku province of Indonesia early November 15.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake was centered in the sea about 140 kilometers northwest of Ternate. However, the agency gave no tsunami alert.

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climate, and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunami warning for North Sulawesi and North Maluku, but it was canceled about two hours later.

No report on casualties and damage has been given.

Indonesia, one of the most disaster-prone nations on earth, straddles the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide and a large portion of the world’s volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.

A 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island in September 2018 killed more than 2,200 people, with over 1,000 more missing.

AMBON CITY, Indonesia: At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured after a strong earthquake struck Indonesia’s remote Maluku islands Thursday (Sep 26), destroying homes and triggering landslides that buried at least one of the victims.

“The total number of people who died in the earthquake is 20,” national disaster mitigation spokesman Agus Wibowo said in a statement.

“At least 100 people were injured and more than 2,000 evacuated.”

Among those killed was an infant, he added.

Terrified residents ran into the streets as buildings fell in around them after the 6.5-magnitude quake hit at around 8.45 am local time (0045 GMT).

One person was buried in a landslide while others were hit by falling debris, the local disaster agency said earlier.

Another person died of a heart attack as the tremor hit, while one woman died after falling off her motorbike while fleeing to higher ground, officials said.

Residents in Ambon, a city of about 400,000 people, were seen helping injured residents with blood-stained clothes, while images showed wrecked homes with collapsed walls and rubble-strewn on the ground.

Some patients fled a local hospital as the quake hit, prompting officials to set up makeshift shelters outside the building, an official said.

“The impact was felt across Ambon city and surrounding areas,” said Rahmat Triyono, head of the earthquake and tsunami division at Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

“Many people were woken up by the shaking … it felt like a truck was passing by.”

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck about 37km northeast of Ambon in Maluku province at a depth of 29km.

The area was hit by at least two dozen aftershocks including one that measured 5.6-magnitude, Triyono said.

“I was asleep with my family when suddenly the house started to shake,” said an AFP reporter in Ambon.

“The quake was really strong. We ran from our house and saw the neighbors fleeing too. Everybody was panicking.”

Architect Suryanto Soekarno said a construction site where he and his employees were working was rocked by the tremor.

“It was a really hard shock,” he told AFP.

“Filing cabinets fell over and my employees ran away to save themselves. Some were injured but thank God only with minor wounds.”

“NO NEED TO PANIC”

Initial reports said the quake struck offshore, but later analysis found it hit onshore, raising the potential for damage, according to Indonesia’s national disaster mitigation agency.

Local BMKG head Oral Sem Wilar called for calm.

“People were panicking and started to evacuate in some places, but we are trying to tell them there’s no need to panic because there’s no tsunami threat,” he told AFP.

The Southeast Asian archipelago is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth. It experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide.

In August, five people died and several were injured after a powerful undersea earthquake rocked Indonesia’s heavily populated Java island.

Last year, a 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island left more than 4,300 people dead or missing.

The force of the impact saw entire neighborhoods leveled by liquefaction– a process where the ground starts behaving like a liquid and swallows up the earth like quicksand.

Nearly 60,000 people are still living in makeshift accommodation nearly a year after the double disaster, the Red Cross said this week.

On Dec 26, 2004, a devastating 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra and triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 throughout the region, including around 170,000 in Indonesia.

Lima, Peru — A powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck a remote part of the Amazon jungle in Peru early Sunday, collapsing buildings and knocking out power to some areas but causing only one reported death. The quake struck at 2:41 a.m. and was centered in a vast nature preserve 57 miles east of the small town of Yurimaguas.

Helping limit damage was the earthquake’s depth, at 70 miles below the surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Earthquakes that are close to the surface generally cause more destruction.

President Martín Vizcarra called for calm before traveling to the zone with members of his cabinet to survey the damage. He said first reports indicate a bridge had collapsed and several homes and roads had been affected.

“It’s a quake that was felt throughout the Peruvian jungle,” said Vizcarra, who was scheduled to host a regional summit Sunday in the capital with the presidents of Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador.

Ricardo Seijas, chief of the National Emergency Operations Center, said one person died when a rock fell on a house in the Huarango district.

A preliminary survey by authorities found that six people were injured and 27 homes damaged across seven provinces. Three schools, three hospitals and two churches were also affected.

In Yurimaguas, a bridge and several old houses collapsed and the electricity was cut, according to the National Emergency Operations Center.

Images circulating on social media showed residents in several parts of the country panicked as the quake shook buildings.

Earthquakes are frequent in Peru, which lies on the Pacific’s so-called Ring of Fire. On August 15, 2007, a similarly sized quake struck near Lima, killing more than 500 people.

MANILA: A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck at sea off the southern Philippine coast late Friday (Feb 8), though there were no early reports of damage and the local seismology office said it expected none.

The US Geological Survey and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake struck at 7.55pm (1155 GMT), its epicentre about 41km east of the town of General Luna on Mindanao island.

It had a relatively shallow depth, measured at 24 kilometres by the US agency – and 19 kilometres by the local quake monitors – but the latter said in an advisory that it was not expected to have caused damage.

The Philippines is part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches from quake-prone Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
