The Vatican has outlined guidelines for transplanting of organs or tissues from one species to another

The Vatican has announced that Catholics are permitted to receive transplants of animal tissues to address medical conditions, as advancements in procedures involving genetically modified pig or cow organs continue.

An 88-page document, outlining ethical guidelines for such transplants, reaffirms earlier Church teaching, stating there is no objection to these treatments provided they follow best medical practices and avoid animal cruelty.

Pope replaces New York’s pro-Trump Cardinal with pro-migrant Chicagoan

The newly named pro-migrant archbishop of New York called himself an “unworthy servant” during his first Mass in the city after Pope Leo XIV named his fellow Chicago native to replace a conservative cardinal Thursday.

In a significant shift for the US Catholic Church, Leo replaced Timothy Dolan, who stepped down after reaching the church’s retirement age of 75, with Ronald Hicks, a 58-year-old bishop from Illinois.

“I’ve always loved the energy of New York,” Hicks said at a Mass for the staff of the New York archdiocese in Manhattan’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which he also addressed in Spanish. He will be formally installed February 6.

Vatican commission votes against allowing women as deacons

A high-level Vatican commission has voted against allowing women to serve as deacons, maintaining the Church’s practice of all-male clergy, according to report given to Pope Leo XIV.

The commission, in a 7-1 vote, said historical research and theological investigation “excludes the possibility” of allowing women to serve as deacons at this time but recommended further study of the issue.

The report, published today, said the group’s assessment of the matter was strong, but “does not as of today allow a definitive judgement to be formulated”.

Vatican nixes use of ‘Co-Redemptrix’ as title for Mary

The Vatican’s doctrinal office said Tuesday the title of “Co-Redemptrix” is not an appropriate way to describe Mary’s participation in salvation.

In Mater Populi Fidelis (“The Mother of the Faithful People of God”), the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) said when an expression requires frequent explanation to maintain the correct meaning, it becomes unhelpful.

“In this case, the expression ‘co-redemptrix’ does not help extol Mary as the first and foremost collaborator in the work of redemption and grace, for it carries the risk of eclipsing the exclusive role of Jesus Christ,” according to the doctrinal note, released Nov. 4.

Pope Leo XIV has met with one of the most prominent advocates for greater LGBTQ+ inclusion in the Catholic Church

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Leo XIV met Monday with one of the most prominent advocates for greater LGBTQ+ inclusion in the Catholic Church and encouraged his ministry, sending a strong signal of welcome in the early months of his pontificate.

The Rev. James Martin, a New York-based Jesuit author and editor, said Leo told him he intended to continue Pope Francis’ policy of LGBTQ+ acceptance in the church and encouraged him to keep up his advocacy.

“I heard the same message from Pope Leo that I heard from Pope Francis, which is the desire to welcome all people, including LGBTQ people,” Martin told The Associated Press after the audience. “It was wonderful. It was very consoling and very encouraging and frankly a lot of fun.”

Vatican announces first U.S. pope: Leo XIV

May 8 (UPI) — Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States has been elected the new pope and has chosen the name Pope Leo XIV.

Pope Leo XIV is the first U.S. pope and the second American pope after Pope Francis, who was from the South American nation of Argentina.

Pope Leo XIV formerly was known as Cardinal Robert Prevost and is a 69-year-old member of the Augustinian religious order, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Pope Leo XIV addressed the crowd that gathered in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, some of whom waved U.S. flags after learning the new pope is from the United States.

But he insisted on soldiering on, including when he visited inmates at a prison in Rome on Holy Thursday, sources told the outlet’s Italian-born Vatican correspondent, Elisabetta Pique.

Vatican Excommunicates Major Pope Critic For ‘Schism’

The Vatican has excommunicated Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, one of Pope Francis’s most virulent critics, after judging him guilty of splitting the Church, the dicastery in charge of doctrine said Friday.

The 83-year-old ultra conservative, who has called in the past for Francis to resign as pope, has been on trial since last month after being accused by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith of the crime of schism, or splitting the Catholic Church.

“His public statements manifesting his refusal to recognise and submit to the Supreme Pontiff, his rejection of communion with the members of the Church subject to him, and of the legitimacy and magisterial authority of the Second Vatican Council are well known,” wrote the dicastery in a statement.

“At the conclusion of the penal process, the Most Reverend Carlo Maria Vigano was found guilty of the reserved delict of schism,” it wrote, adding that his punishment was “excommunication” in accordance with canon law.

Vatican releases new norms on alleged supernatural phenomena

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith releases a document detailing new norms regarding cases of reported supernatural phenomena. As a rule, neither the local bishop nor the Holy See will declare that these phenomena are of supernatural origin, but will only authorize and promote devotion and pilgrimages

A new document from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith published on Friday, May 17, has updated the norms for discerning alleged supernatural phenomena. The norms come into force on Sunday, May 19, the feast of Pentecost.

The document is preceded by a detailed presentation by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery, followed by an introduction and six possible conclusions. The procedure allows for faster decisions while respecting popular devotion.

As a rule, the Church’s authority will no longer be engaged to officially define the supernatural nature of a phenomenon, a process that can require large amounts time to thoroughly study an event.

Vatican approves blessings for same-sex couples in landmark ruling

VATICAN CITY, Dec 18 (Reuters) – The Vatican said on Monday in a landmark ruling approved by Pope Francis that Roman Catholic priests can administer blessings to same-sex couples as long as they are not part of regular Church rituals or liturgies.

A document from the Vatican’s doctrinal office, which effectively reversed a declaration the same body had issued in 2021, said such blessings would not legitimise irregular situations but be a sign that God welcomes all.

It should in no way be confused with the sacrament of heterosexual marriage, it added.
