The Krasheninnikov Volcano just erupted for the first time in centuries.

The volcano, located in the Kamchatka Peninsula in far eastern Russia, erupted in the morning of Sunday, Aug. 3, Reuters and CNN reported, citing Russia’s RIA state news agency and scientists.

Olga Girina, head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), called it “the first historically confirmed eruption of Krasheninnikov Volcano in 600 years,” per the outlets.

He said volcanic material was thrown up to 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from its crater, blanketing nearby villages and towns with tons of volcanic debris and forcing residents to flee.

The Shiveluch volcano erupted just after midnight and reached a crescendo about six hours later, spewing out an ash cloud over an area of 108,000 square kilometres (41,700 square miles), according to the Kamchatka Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Geophysical Survey.

Lava flows tumbled from the volcano, melting snow and prompting a warning of mud flows along a nearby highway while villages were carpeted in drifts of grey ash as deep as 8.5 centimetres (3.5 inches), the deepest in 60 years.

Pictures showed the cloud billowing over the forests and rivers of the far east and of villages covered in ash.

“The ash reached 20 kilometres high, the ash cloud moved westwards and there was a very strong fall of ash on nearby villages,” said Danila Chebrov, director of the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey.

Mount Ontake, a 10,062-foot volcano about 175 miles west of Tokyo on the border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures, has been at a Level 2 alert since Wednesday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. That’s the highest alert there since Aug. 21, 2017.

A Level 2 alert means the erupting volcano may hurl rocks up to 3,280 feet from its crater, according to the agency.

Ontake was at Level 1, which signals “potential increased activity,” on the agency’s five-level alert system.

Increased tremors have been detected at the mountain since Wednesday afternoon. Ninety-seven earthquakes were recorded from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. that day, the agency said.

An Ontake eruption on Sept. 27, 2014, killed 58 people and left five others missing.

The agency urged people to stay out of the danger zone in Otaki village and Kiso town in Nagano prefecture and Gero city in Gifu prefecture.

After the eruption, officials at Yokota Air Base in western Tokyo warned residents and their pets to stay indoors to avoid breathing ash that could fall on the installation. However, no ash was observed in the area.

Visitors have not been allowed on the mountain during the winter season since 2014, Kyodo News reported Thursday.
