Russia has stoked World War 3 fears in recent years after aggressively annexing Crimea and allegedly interfering in the US presidential elections.

Crispin Blunt, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, appeared on the BBC’s Daily Politics to discuss UK defence spending and policy.

He told host Jo Coburn that Britain and its allies had missed their chance to contain the Russian threat, and that Vladimir Putin was now a “serious problem” for the West.

He said: “There was a strategic question for the nations of the West when the Soviet Union ended.

“I would argue that in that period of the 1990s we were too triumphalist and we failed to engage the interests of Russia properly post the end of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.

“We missed our opportunity there, then the oil price rose.

“That gave Putin the opportunity to reboot the Russian economy, to reboot Russia’s defence capabilities, and to give Russia some sense of national pride and nationalism.

“And that, together with this organised kleptocracy surrounding Putin, has created a serious problem now for the West because Russia is no longer within our sphere of influence.

“That, I would argue, is one of our failures of the Cold War.”

Mr Blunt added that Britain was committed to meeting its NATO military spending obligations of two percent of GDP, but refused to say whether it would increase to three percent.

Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson reignited the debate over military spending over the weekend after a Sunday newspaper reported he had threatened to “crush” the Treasury and bring down Theresa May if the Ministry of Defense did not receive a £20 billion cash boost.

Mr Williamson allegedly boasted: “I made her – and I can break her.”

Chancellor Philip Hammond responded by declaring that there was no money left for extra military spending.

CHINESE defence minister General Wei Fenghe said his visit to Moscow was a demonstration of the strong diplomatic relationship between the two countries and a warning to the United States, saying “we’ve come to support you”.

General Wei Fenghe was in Russia to meet with Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu, in his first foreign trip since being appointed to the position. His comments have sparked fears that current tensions may escalate to World War 3.

He said: “I am visiting Russia as a new defence minister of China to show the world a high level of development of our bilateral relations and firm determination of our armed forces to strengthen strategic cooperation”

“The Chinese side has come to show Americans the close ties between the armed forces of China and Russia … we’ve come to support you.”

He added that China is willing to express “our common concerns and common position on important international problems at international venues as well.”

New Chinese defence minister claimed his visit to Moscow was a show of strength against the US

Mr Shoigu claimed that Wei’s visit “underlines a special character of relations between Russia and China”.

The unequivocal show of support comes days after Russia announced that it had tested a new ballistic missile capable of hitting Florida. Earlier this week it announced it will expell 60 American diplomats and close the US Consulate in St. Petersburg in a tit-for-tat response to similar measures by the US.

The United States expelled 50 Russian diplomats last month over the poisoning of Sergei Skripal in Salisbury in March.

The United Kingdom and United States have blamed Russia for the incident which which involved a military-grade Novichok nerve agent and sparked an international diplomatic confrontation. Russia strongly denies the accusations.

Tensions escalated in the days after the attack when British Defence Minister Gavin Williamson accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of attempting to “subvert, undermine and influence countries around the world”, and told him to “shut up and go away”.

It later emerged that US President Donald Trump had proposed a meeting between himself and Putin at the White House in a telephone call with the Russian premier in March.

Trump told reporters that he expected “to be seeing President Putin in the not-too-distant future”.

Sarah Huckabee-Sanders, White House spokesperson, confirmed Mr Trump had extended the invitation for a meeting, and that the White House was a possible venue, but gave no further details.

A statement released by the White House said: “As the President himself confirmed on March 20, hours after his last call with President Putin, the two had discussed a bilateral meeting in the ‘not-too-distant future’ at a number of potential venues, including the White House.”

In late March, Chinese president Xi Jinping hosted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for talks that were widely viewed as a diplomatic coup for the North Korean leader before his expected meeting with Donald Trump later this year.

INDIA must prepare for World War 3 with Pakistan and China because there is “no space left for talks” as tensions between the three nuclear armed nations rise exponentially, a group of experts has declared.

Retired Brigadier for the Inidan Army, V. Mahalingam, explained that New Delhi must prepare for a two-front war with both of its neighbours and stated that Pakistan’s unwillingness to “give even an inch in either Kashmir of Afghanistan” is a grave threat. He said: “As of today, there is no space left for talks with the Pakistan government.

“There, it is the military that is ruling and it is not willing to give even an inch in either Kashmir or Afghanistan.”

Manoj Joshi, a distinguished fellow at the Observer Research Foundation, added to the fears of a two-front war by insisting that India has been unable to break the “Pakistan-China nexus”.

He commented: “When was the last time a country won a two-front war? Unfortunately, for us we have not been able to use our diplomacy to break the Pakistan-China nexus and that is our challenge.”However, V. Mahalingam was eager to try and quell fears of World War 3 by detailing that cooperation between India and China surrounding the area of Doklam showed positive signs.

Retired Vice Admiral, Satish Soni, stated that in a situation of heightening tensions, New Delhi should “exploit its geographical advantage” presented by the Indian Ocean.

He remarked: “In the Indian Ocean, the game is very long and it is being played very slowly. India has a geographical advantage and it should exploit it.”

In addition to consistent violations of a ceasefire along the contested border known as the Line of Control, both India and Pakistan appear to be engaging in an arms race.

Last week it was confirmed that China had sold an optical tracking system to Islamabad – such technology is widely used in missile testing.

The sale marks the first time the Asian superstate has sold such equipment to a foreign power.

Pakistan has long sought to develop multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles (MIRVs) while India has focused on putting together nuclear warhead missiles in a singular form.

“We are also strengthening our ability to move forces across Europe, but also across the North Atlantic.”

Since Russia invaded Crimea a number of political spats have taken place between the two countries.

Last year Russia accused Ukraine of trying to stage armed demonstrations in the southern peninsula.

However, Ukraine argued Russia had placed tens of thousands of troops on the border.

Reaffirming his support for Ukraine, Mr Stoltenberg said: “It’s not possible to give you an exact date for staying in Eastern Europe.

“We will stay there as long as necessary.”

Recently additional Western troops have been deployed on Europe’s Eastern border with Russia as Mr Putin held his first war game with Belarus for four years.

Despite the additional Western troops during the war game in September, Russia’s military forces dwarfed those of NATO.

President Putin has previously accused neighbouring NATO-affiliated countries of being the aggressors, defending similar military drills as acts of dissuasion.

However, the Russian leader has also previously outlined his wish to see the international organisation fail, describing it as in his county’s best interest.

However, he went on to add that Russia “don’t see that falling apart just yet.”

Thee are fears that without NATO’s presence in the area that Russia would invade more neighbouring countries.

NATO was originally founded in 1949 as an alliance against the Soviet Union and has maintained its opposition to Russia’s expansionist aims ever since.
