“United States of Europe”-When?
Since the 1950s, I have been proclaiming that America will one day be stunned by the emergence of a new power bloc in Europe; that America and the Soviet Union would not go to war; that a reunited Germany would be pivotal to a future United States of Europe! Now, suddenly, the walls come tumbling down in Europe; governments topple in but days; the global news media begins frantically writing about the reunification of Germany; and from the White House to London, urgent meetings behind the scenes discuss the destabilization of Europe, the power vacuum in East Germany, the nightmarish economic, sociological and political problems for which no immediate solutions are evident. And everyone was so SURPRISED! But for me, and those of us in this work, the only surprising part was how quickly so many events in Europe occurred. That Europe is in ferment; that governments are toppling; that the two Germanys may soon be reunited, IS NOT SURPRISING AT ALL TO THOSE WHO SUPPORT TWENTIETH CENTURY WATCH magazine and the work on television. Here’s why!
Berlin: November, 1989
The euphoric crowds here are reminiscent of the masses of celebrants on New Year’s Eve in Pasadena, California, just before the famed Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl Game. For several nights now, police have closed off all vehicular traffic in the center of West Berlin. Along Charlottenstrasse and the Durfurstendam, hundreds of thousands of excited East Berliners jam the entrances and escalators to the big department stores, throng the streets where enterprising West Berliners have set up hundreds of kiosks, card tables, temporary booths, or just open-sided Volkswagen vans to sell food, drink, fresh fruit, T-shirts, cheap jewelry—anything that might allow them to capitalize on this massive invasion of their German cousins from across the wall. Some hot food stands are giving away food. I witnessed a West Berlin police station handing out free coffee.
I watched as hundreds waited by a street comer kiosk set up under temporary umbrellas where sales people were hurriedly unwrapping bananas, uncrating dozens of boxes of oranges. The delighted East Berliners—many of whom had not yet been born when the hated wall went up—were purchasing only a few of each, or just one banana, and then eating their first bite with a look of wonder on their faces.
My sons Mark and David watched with me at famous “Checkpoint Charlie” as a young East Berliner gleefully carried one pineapple in his hand. From a purely human point of view, it is difficult not to be caught up emotionally in the high drama of the euphoric excitement of millions of repressed people suddenly experiencing a taste of freedom; seeing the amazing, glittering development of West Germany in such stark contrast to their own homeland of comparative poverty. From a broader perspective, looking into the future, concerns about events yet to occur inside Eastern Europe dampen that emotion. All this euphoria will eventually become a swelling tidal wave of nationalism, and with it, increasing animosity toward America and Britain!
In the issue before last of The International News, I wrote a lengthy article entitled “World in Ferment,” detailing the enormous outpouring of dissent against communist repression; the cries for democratic reforms and freedom from China to Estonia; from Azerbaijan to Poland; from East Germany to Armenia. The pivotal figure in all this has been Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who implemented glasnost (openness) and perestroika (reconstruction).
Now, as nation after nation in East Europe follow the lead of Poland, and Lech Walesa’s Solidarity, it is time to ponder: Will democracy come to East Europe?
Government Crackdowns?
Excited masses, huge demonstrations, general strikes, emotional outcries for freedom in East Europe—these have dominated our news for months. There is much, much more to come.
But the euphoria over freedom does not suddenly bring freedom. National constitutions, laws, governmental institutions, economic systems—the infrastructure of a whole society—these do not change overnight. Time and again, Western observers have spoken about demonstrations in East Germany or Czechoslovakia possibly getting out of hand. Some, remembering the bloodletting in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, wonder darkly about government intervention. That such will occur is extremely doubtful in the light of statements from Soviet leadership. A Soviet intellectual who was instrumental in shaping Soviet policy toward Eastern Europe, Georgy Shakhnazarov, said, “We have said many times that we are ready to disband the Warsaw Pact tomorrow if NATO was also disbanded. We think that these questions must be solved in the context of an all-European political process.”
With the Soviet leadership signaling they will not interfere in free elections in Hungary or Czechoslovakia; with Gorbachev himself all but ordering East German communist leader Erich Honecker to resign, the hundreds of thousands taking to the streets in Prague, Bucharest, and East Berlin seem to have little to fear from Warsaw Pact Soviet tanks.
Democracy—Or Some Form of National Socialism?
One of the most frightening facts in all this sudden outpouring of emotion, this desperate bid for freedom and democratic reform in Eastern Europe, is that none of these people have a significant history of democratic governments or democratic institutions! Like many other sudden revolutions, we may awake one morning to find that several countries have leapt out of the arms of one kind of totalitarian repression into another.
First, we will see the emergence of political parties at every conceivable extreme—from reform-minded communists to militant socialists, from nationalists to laborites. Long repressed feelings will burst forth in passionate demonstrations from this or that group, led by this or that would-be leader. As occurred in the days of the flagging Weimar Republic in Germany, we may see such vying for political advantage turn ugly, with attacks, bombings, assassinations and riots. Each nation in Eastern Europe will face its own sets of problems in the context of its own national character; its own emotional, mental, moral and spiritual makeup.
The Pope and the Role of the Church
The moment Karol Wojtila acceded to the Vatican as Pope John Paul II, I said to audiences of thousands that he would be instrumental in prying loose the iron grip of Soviet domination over his homeland, Poland. That has happened. During the long struggle of Gdansk shipyard worker Lech Walesa and his fellows in Solidarity, the fledgling labor union was given encouragement, support, shelter and aid by Catholic clerics from one end of the country to the other. Who does not remember the fantastic outpouring of love and adoration on the part of millions of Poles when their favorite son returned to his home county; his home town? One crowd was estimated at one million!
Even though throwing Walesa in jail for a time, the militant government under Jaruzelsky did not dare assassinate Walesa, no matter how badly they may have wanted to, for they knew such an event, no matter how carefully contrived, would make Walesa into a martyr and unleash such a massive nation-wide riot that no one could guess at the outcome.
Then, in a stunning reversal, Walesa was freed; stumped the country at worker’s strident demands to attend massive rallies; Jaruzelsky resigned, and Walesa, offered the premiership, humbly declined; bowed to those more skilled at government. Now, Solidarity is the most important political force in Poland, and Walesa’s trip to the U.S. and triumphant speech before the Congress underlined the incredible influence of the pope and the Catholic Church in geopolitics.
Pope John Paul II is the most charismatic pope in history; a man revered, respected and worshipped by hundreds of millions. As a Slav, rising from the ranks, elected to a dizzying position at the pinnacle of power, he wields much more weight than any single world leader, more weight, in fact, than quite a number of them taken together. In an unprecedented, history-making meeting, Mikhail Gorbachev visited the pope in the Vatican prior to meeting George Bush off Malta. Gorbachev in talking about a “common European home,” has himself called for a United Europe “from the Atlantic to the Urals” (the pope’s own words—and remember the Urals are far to the east of Moscow!). But more importantly, Gorbachev needs all the clout he can muster just to survive.
As no single human in history from Hitler until now, Gorbachev has set in motion sweeping changes in many nations—so far, on the surface—for the good. The rapidity with which the old, stony-faced Supreme Soviet is losing its grip, not only on East Europe, but in the Soviet Union itself, has led many analysts in the West to speculate darkly about the coming downfall of Mr. Gorbachev. His visit with the pope is aimed, no doubt, at preventing loss of the vitally important Ukraine, where a quarter of all Russian food is produced, and a third of its industrial output is based—and where large numbers of Ukrainian Catholics are restively talking about having their own separate state. Same for Lithuania. Also to be discussed: A possible reciprocal visit of the pope to Moscow—if he can visit the Ukraine.
Gorbachev knows he is taking a calculated risk; knows it will require every bit of support, from every possible quarter, to bring about the desired economic reforms in his beleaguered country without virtual civil war, or a new revolution. Therefore, it made little difference to him that his visit was the first ever for any communist leader; or, for that matter, that he knew the Vatican strongly believes the Soviet leadership had to know what the KGB was up to when it allegedly sponsored the assassination attempt on the pope. Network news from Rome said the pope had been willing to “forgive and forget.”
If ever there was a visit between two heads of state that seemed tailor-made for success, it was that of Wojtila and Gorbachev. Both Slavs, they could speak in a common tongue. Both from small towns; both having studied acting in their youth; both having emerged as charismatic leaders who, in their own spheres, have made history, and both with a great deal to gain from such a meeting, it is no wonder it occurred, for all the fact that it was absolutely historic.
Gorbachev knows how powerful a force is wielded by the pope throughout Europe, and to a large extent in the Soviet Union itself. For centuries, Europe has been unable to separate religion from politics. Political parties have been nurtured inside the church from time immemorial. Though the Russian Orthodox Church is the official religion in the Ukraine, millions of those who faithfully attend services there are closet Catholics.
Vladimir Pravotorov, editor in chief of Science and Religion, a monthly magazine, put it just right: “…we are seeing a revival of nationalist movement which use the churches to advance their causes.”
How Bible Prophecy Describes Religious Influence in Geopolitics Near the End Time
One of the key figures in prophecy at the time of the end—the time of the Great Tribulation and the Day of the Lord—is the infamous “false prophet,” who will ultimately claim to be, not just a representative of God, but claim to be God!
Notice: “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day [the Day of the Lord] shall not come, except there come a falling away first [a great apostasy—millions embracing a false religion], and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition. Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God…And then shall that Wicked [one] be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan [he will have super-human power, influence, magnetism!] with all power and signs and lying wonders…” (2 Thessalonians 2:2-9).
The false prophet is the “lamb-like” beast who “…spake as a dragon [Satan]. And he exerciseth all the power [economic and military] of the first beast before him [the ten-nation “beast” power], and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast [the ten-nation combine], whose deadly wound was healed.
“And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast … which had the wound by a sword, and did live.” (Revelation 13:11-14).
This great religious personage is identified in many prophecies of the Bible!
Notice that the GREAT TRIBULATION is specifically called the “time of Jacob’s trouble”! It is a time of national privation and captivity for the two tribes who bear Jacob’s [Israel’s] name, Ephraim [Britain] and Manasseh [the United States].
God warns, “Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble [great trial, or tribulation]; but he shall be saved out of it [he shall go through it, not escape from it]. For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Eternal of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds [picturing slavery!], and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him: But they shall serve the Eternal their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them” (Jeremiah 30:7-9). The time setting of this prophecy is inescapable. It is at the time leading up to the first resurrection, which occurs at the moment of Christ’s return (1 Corinthians 15:50-52).
At the time of Christ’s return, His people in America and Britain are pictured as being under the heavy yoke of an enemy! That enemy is identified as Assyria—GERMANY in Bible prophecy—together with a GREAT FALSE UNIVERSAL CHURCH!
Note this well: the great false church is called the “lady of kingdoms” in Isaiah 47. A woman is the symbol of a church; in this case, a church which is more like a state than a church; a church which mixes in global politics; a church which wields political power. “I was wroth with my people [Israel], I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy YOKE. And thou saidst, I shall be a lady forever [an “eternal” church]: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart … thou … sayest ‘I am’ [a blasphemous title, for it belongs only to God], and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow [she is involved in a “marriage” or political concourse with a nation which alone in the world calls itself by the masculine term, “fatherland”], neither shall I know the loss of children [she has daughters—other, smaller churches which came out of her in protest]: But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude … of thine enchantments” (Isaiah 47:6-9).
Now, notice where the leaders of this unholy union of church and state meet their end: “…Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand: That I will break the Assyrian [Germany] in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall HIS YOKE depart … from off them, and his burden depart … from off their shoulders” (Isaiah 14:24-25).
This never happened in history! The Assyrian armies invaded Palestine from 721 to 718 B.C., carried hundreds of thousands of Israelites from the northern kingdom of the “House of Israel” into captivity. God says, “…the Eternal removed Israel out of His sight, as He had said by all His servants the prophets. So was Israel [but NOT JUDAH; not the “House of Judah”; the JEWS living in and around Jerusalem! Their separate kingdom continued for many, many decades following Israel’s disappearance!] carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day” (2 Kings 17:23).
Assyria was eventually subjugated by the rising power of Babylon, and disappeared from history. But never were Assyrian armies destroyed “upon God’s mountain,” or in the land of Palestine! Like the prophecies concerning the great false prophet, and the false church he heads, this prophecy concerning the Assyrian armies meeting final destruction in Palestine is for the future, at the time of the great battle of Armageddon.
So the YOKE to be laid on Israel—symbol of squalid privation and slavery—is laid upon our peoples by an unholy “marriage” between a great false church, calling herself the “lady of kingdoms,” who says she is an “eternal” church, and who boasts she shall not know “widowhood,” and a powerful combination of nations called “the beast” in prophecy; the final ten kings of Revelation 17!
You will be seeing, with your own startled eyes, the gradual formation of this beast power rearing up in Europe; seeing the influence of religionsucceeding where political ideologies have failed to bring old enemies together.
Without the influence of a great universal church it would be impossible for Poles, Czechs, Hungarians, Bulgarians, and many other Europeans to abandon their centuries-long suspicion and fear of Germany! But common goals of prosperity; common desperation resulting from decades of communist oppression; and a common religion will bring them together for a short time!
There is no church which claims more “signs and wonders” than the Catholic Church, with her weeping statues, relics, alleged appearances of the virgin, sacred shrouds, and the like. Who has not heard of Lourdes? Will an increasingly chaotic Europe seek to the centuries-long stability, dignity, and mystically splendid leadership of the church, and its pope?
Daniel’s prophecy of the coming ten-nation combine in Europe depicts the feet and toes of the great image as mixed with iron and clay. “And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it the strength of iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
“And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men [an interracial, mixed group of different nationalities]: but they shall not cleave one to another [they never have], even as iron is not mixed with clay” (Daniel 2:41-43).
The only nation on earth which has used iron as a symbol of its strength of will—and which has been a leader in the production of pig iron andsteel; in the building of conventional weapons—is Germany.
Bismark was called the “Iron Chancellor,” and the “Iron Cross” is one of the German army’s coveted medals. Now, notice: Daniel interprets Nebudchadnezzar’s dream as a great image which is destroyed by a symbolic rock [a type of Christ] which is dislodged from heaven, and which smashes the image on its feet, consisting of ten toes. The prophecy says, “And in the days of these kings [the final ten] shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever” (Daniel 2:44).
Notice! “And the ten horns [on the ‘beast’ of Revelation 17] which thou sawest are ten kings which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind [one policy; the same goal, or aim], and shall give their power [the power of a king is absolute; economic, industrial, military] and strength unto the beast.
“These shall make war with the Lamb [so they exist at the time of the end, just at the time of Christ’s Second Coming!], and the Lamb shall overcome them: for He is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with Him are called, and chosen, and faithful” (Revelation 17:12-14).
Who Are the Final Ten?
The ten nations, or kings, are not together yet. At this writing, it is difficult to say which nations will comprise the ten kings of Bible prophecy. It may be a many years-long process; it will take time. Following the shocking developments in Eastern Europe, the EEC may not develop as it has been planned. The “Common Market” may become a dinosaur within months; discarded in favor of other, more lucrative trading preferences.
Because we know Britain, and some of the Scandinavian countries perhaps much of Belgium, and at least the northern portion of France are Israelitish stock, we have speculated that these people may not be included in the final “United States of Europe” (if that is what it is ultimately called), but that some of the Western European nations may find themselves excluded, or, in Britain’s case, may simply withdraw, in protest, as a completely new and different alignment of European nations is formed. You need to WATCH developments in Europe, to be awake (1 Thessalonians 5:1-8) to world events, to ponder which events are important, and which are not. If you are continuing to read The International News and each issue of this magazine, you will know WHAT AND HOW TO WATCH! Now, here is what may happen to trigger a sudden turn toward ultra-nationalism in Germany.
Economic Setbacks?
For years, I have warned, “Any threat to newfound prosperity in West Germany could quickly change the face of West German politics.” West German political parties receive subventions from major industrial firms, some of them among the giants of the global economy. In one sensational book, Watcher Along the Rhine, veteran Reuter’s correspondent Brian Connel revealed how many of the heads of major German industries (some have since died) were former card-carrying members of the Nazi Party. He wrote of how serious economic reversals in West Germany could well divert these huge subventions into “less savory” quarters!
Western observers know Germany has had a history of political instability. The current situation has led to a plethora of news articles voicing the ominous possibility of “destabilization” in Europe as the two Germanys strive toward reunification.
Few Americans know or appreciate the deep feeling of Germans whose country has lain divided for forty-four long years; whose cities and towns have been the scene of war games played by NATO forces, or those of the Warsaw Pact. Few know of the bitterness of many young Germans who talk of abuses by American military personnel—fights and brawls in bars, robbery, rape. Few know the behind the scenes anti-Americanism that exists, for it is simply not reported in the news. But it is THERE!
And what of education? What has been the experience of millions of young East Germans as opposed to their counterparts in West Germany as they studied the causes for Germany’s defeat in World War II? Do you suppose for one instant they view that period in the same way most of you view it?
And what of their feelings about Germany’s massive loss of territory after the war? About ethnic Germans in Poland, Czechoslavakia and other countries? There is much to consider.
It will be important to WATCH, in the months ahead, the economic trends and conditions in central Europe, especially in the two Germanys! For NATO to be abandoned, and all American, French and British troops to leave Germany, a whole new global balance of power would have to be achieved.
And if Germany REUNITES, it would INSTANTLY destroy the present delicate balance of power between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, for a reunited Germany would possess the THIRD LARGEST STANDING ARMY IN THE WORLD! Make no mistake! Massive social upheavals are coming in Europe—in Germany.
There will be logical causes for massive social unrest in Germany: 1) Sudden collapse of the economy, perhaps from a global stock market collapse (blamed on the U.S.). 2) A new round of war in the Mideast and the cutoff of Europe’s oil by an Arab oil embargo. 3) Hundreds of thousands of Germans from East Germany are pouring into West Germany only to find jobs occupied by large numbers of Turks, Spaniards, and other minorities. One West German I met at the wall near Brandenburg Gate told me there were mutterings already being heard about these racial minorities holding German jobs. 4) If the two Germanys decide, multilaterally, to unite, the sudden drain on West German financial resources could trigger an immediate economic crisis. As one Western observer somberly wrote, “Power is lying in the streets of East Berlin, waiting for someone to pick it up.”
Whatever the cause, there will eventually be a return to extreme nationalism in Germany, and for a time that nationalism will seek pan-European expression!
Many Express Concern About Reunification
Many governments chafe over the specter of a reunified Germany. Editor in chief Mortimer Zuckerman of The U.S. News and World Report wrote “…the pulse of nationalism is now beating with renewed force on both sides of the Berlin Wall as divisions between East and West dissolve … So why not look forward to a reunited Germany? Because it would terrify both the East and the West with unpredictable consequences” (emphasis mine).
A member of the French Parliament, Loic Bouvard said, “We are very much concerned about the impact the rapprochement of the two Germanys might have on the European Community.” while some leaders in Czechoslavakia “view efforts at reunification as a drive powered by a revengeful spirit on the part of the Germans to reclaim territory lost in World War II.” The Associated Press’ Carol J. Williams wrote of how “German Unity Talk Stirs Jitters,” saying, “Although the superpowers profess to have no fear of a reunited Germany, Europeans on both sides of the East-West divide are growing increasingly nervous at the prospect of a German giant in their midst.”
Yet, the Kremlin, for all its forty-four year long history of fears of German revanchism, recently said, “Everything is up to the Germans”—this from Nikolai Slhislin, head of the Communist Party Central Committee’s East European Department. The prestigious Bonn based daily, Die Welt, quoted Yevgeny Primakov, head of the lower house of the Supreme Soviet, as telling CBS television interviewers, “The Kremlin has no objections to the departure of any of its allies from the Warsaw Pact.”
And then, just days before the Malta Summit, West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl called for the reunification of Germany; laid out a ten-point program to accomplish it; suggested committees on both sides of the wall to tackle the difficult problems like finance, industry, transportation, communications, the environment, security and so forth. His speech was met with enthusiastic support from both his own party and the opposition.
Europeans know a reunified Germany would mean nearly eighty million energetic, hard-working, unpredictable people in Central Europe, out-producing their neighbors, with a gross national product the size of Britain and France together, possessing the third largest standing army on earth, the biggest army in Europe outside Russia.
Those who remember Mr. Strauss’ calls for a nuclear Germany might find a few chills running down their spines as well, for German technology ranks at the top in the world. Hitler’s scientist were extremely close to development of an atomic weapon in the final days of World War II, and don’t forget it was the German scientists who powered both the U.S. and Russia’s space program. Britains’ prestigious Economist magazine said, “It [a reunified Germany] would have nearly 80 million people, and a GNP almost as big as Britain’s and France’s combined, plus the biggest army in Europe outside Russia. This will make most other Europeans gulp, even if that greater Germany stays non-nuclear and inside all the institutions of the West [Euratom, European Coal and Steel Community, EEC, NATO, etc.].
U.S. News and World Report wrote in its November 20, 1989 issue, “…one of the greatest unknowns remains the direction unfettered politics will take in East Germany.” And that is precisely the point of this article. For literally decades (see accompanying proof; the many, many quotations from past years), I have been warning that the greatest threat to the future well-being and security of the United States will come from Central Europe—possibly called “The United States of Europe”—and from Japan!
How well I remember the way people scoffed at such articles and messages years ago. I remember saying to doubters over radio and television, “But when you SEE these things happen WITH YOUR OWN EYES, then you will know you were not listening to someone’s ‘private opinions,’ but that a minister of God was speaking to you!”
I wonder, right now, how many millions of Americans, Canadians, South Africans, Australians and Britons are stunned by what has happened, and I wonder how many of them remember how they were warned?
WELL, NOW, IT IS BEGINNING! How long, now, to the impoverishment of the American people; to complete economic collapse; to the beginning of the GREAT TIME OF JACOB’S TROUBLE—the time of national privation and hardship never before imagined for America and Britain? How long, now, until we are at the feet of our former enemies?
A NEW ORDER is coming in Germany! A new wave of nationalism, this time in a broader, European context, is beginning to inspire the hearts and minds of millions across Europe. Europeans are sick and tired of living sandwiched between the two superpowers of Russia and the United States; sick and tired of having hundreds of nuclear-tipped missiles pointed at their cities and homes. NOW, IT IS THEIR TURN! NOW, EUROPEANS ARE TAKING INTO THEIR OWN HANDS THEIR DESTINY!
A part of that destiny is to tell Americans to GET OUT OF EUROPE, AND STAY OUT! You will SEE it happen. You will SEE our former enemies rise up to truly stupendous heights of national economic and industrial strength; see them become the leading military power of this earth!
I wish with all my heart it did not have to happen! God pleads, “…. turn ye [REPENT], turn ye, from your evil ways, for why will ye die, O house of Israel?” This is from Ezekiel 33, the chapter about God’s WATCHMAN who is told, “If when he see the sword [warfare] come upon the land, he blow the trumpet [give warning], and warn the people; Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul” (Ezekiel 33:3-5)!
Ezekiel was told, “Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of their houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.
“And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.
“And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument [I have been told, by hundreds over the decades, that I “have a good radio and television voice,” or that they thought my “delivery was terrific”]: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.
“But when this cometh to pass [THE GREAT TRIBULATION on Israelitish countries], (lo, it will come), THEN SHALL THEY KNOW THAT A PROPHET HATH BEEN AMONG THEM” (Ezekiel 33:30-33)!
Notice! Those who heed God’s last-days warning and witness are said to “deliver their souls.” Yes, God promises protection to some. Yet, Christ promised possible martyrdom to others, even as He promised to His own beloved disciples, including Peter. The point is, those who not only heed the witness and warning, but who REPENT; who turn to Christ in broken-hearted confession of sins; who are baptized, and receive God’s Holy Spirit, automatically become a part of the body of Christ, the church! They become a part of the work of that church which is preaching the Gospel as a witness to all nations!
They become a part of the work of the watchman!
Christ said, “Blessed is that servant, whom his Lord when He cometh shall find so doing ” (Matthew 24:46)!
What about you, and your loved ones? Are you one who can NOW, after these DECADES of witness and warning, finally take heed, and make the decisions you need to make before it is everlastingly too late? Are you one whom God is calling into His work; one who is to receive salvation, or one who will turn a deaf ear, scoff and sneer at God’s warnings, and pretend these shocking world events are not REAL?

Editors note: The following is shocking proof of the consistent witness and warning that has been going out to the world for literally decades—a warning about a coming UNITED STATES OF EUROPE, and a reunified Germany dominating such a union! Excerpts are taken from articles in past issues of The Plain Truth magazine, of which I was executive editor; many from past issues of Twentieth Century WATCH and The International News, and many from tape-recorded sermons, and personal-appearance campaigns all across the country. One or two are excerpts from my father’s early articles; some from senior editors or staff writers; many are excerpts from my own articles or sermons. All show a consistent, decades-long theme of warning about a coming United States of Europe—most of it during the very worst part of the cold war when most if not all professing “prophets” and well-known religious writers and evangelist were confidently predicting a coming war between the United States and Russia, falsely identifying RUSSIA as the “beast” of prophecy! In each case, please take careful note of the date.
The Plain Truth, June 1952, p. 11: “The 10 ‘horns’…in the 17th chapter [of Revelation] … will be … the revival of the BEAST, the Roman Empire, ‘out of the bottomless pit,’ by a ‘United States of Europe,’ or federation of 10 European nations within the bounds of the old Roman Empire” (that includes Eastern Europe!).
The Plain Truth, September 1952, article: “The BEAST is Rising Up,” p. 1: “Paris, France, While the eyes of the world are focused solely on the danger of Communism, America is completely overlooking the greatest danger the world has ever known: —a NEW power to rise up in Europe—a combination of TEN nations, that will crush out Western civilization!”
The Plain Truth, September 1953, p. 1: “…This [riots had occurred in East Germany], is the beginning of an East German revolt against Red tyranny. Czechoslovakia, Poland and other conquered nations behind the Iron Curtain have witnessed similar uprisings in recent weeks. It will take time, but Russia is going to lose out in some of these countries…”
The Plain Truth, November 1954, p.2: “…And now, a short nine years later [after Churchill had said the Western Allies should insure all German industry capable of producing arms be eliminated], behold the spectacle of Washington and London making every possible diplomatic effort, backed by AMERICAN DOLLARS, to do TWO THINGS: Create a UNITED STATES OF EUROPE, and to REARM GERMANY … there is only ONE nation that possesses the INDUSTRY, the energy, the PURPOSE, and the POWER to provide leadership within the new European Empire, and that is GERMANY. And once they rise to leadership within a new united European Empire—once its great, preponderant MILITARY FORCE is created and united under GERMAN MILITARISM, as it inevitably would be, it would be the height of folly to suppose that they would accept any further dominance from Britain or America …
The Plain Truth, November 1954, p.7: “Word comes from the College of Cardinals that the possibility of the new pope being chose (when that becomes a necessity) from the ranks other than Italian is not too remote. The next pope could be the man who will unite Europe!”
The Plain Truth, February 1955, p. 1: “…news analysts the world over are frankly worried about what they see taking place in Germany! … The Allied powers are spending billions of dollars to bring about the German dream of centuries—a United Europe, with Germany at its head! That is what the Kaiser wanted! That is exactly what Hitler killed millions for! AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOUR TAX DOLLARS ARE BRINGING!”
The Plain Truth, February 1962, p.5: “On the WORLD TOMORROW program, and in the pages of the PLAIN TRUTH, we have been shouting to a heedless world for (many) years this was going to occur … it would come as an ECONOMIC force, bringing unprecedented prosperity to Europe. But also, it is to become a political and military combine—a gigantic third power bloc in the world, that will include more population, greater man power, and possibly even greater military resources than either the United States or Russia. When this giant combine—a United States of EUROPE—finally emerges as such before a startled and dumbfounded world, it will last only a very short time. It will fight against Jesus Christ at His Second Coming!
The Plain Truth, March 1962, p.26: “Fascism in Europe is about to be reborn in respectable business attire, and the Treaty of Rome will finally be implemented to its fullest extent … the dream of a Holy Roman Empirereturning to power to dominate and direct the so-called forces of Christian mankind of the Western world is not dead, but still stalks through the antechambers of every national capital of continental Western Europe … IN THE DETERMINATION OF THE LEADERS IN THE COMMON MARKET NATIONS TO RESTORE THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE WITH ALL THAT THAT MEANS! “This United Europe will form a non-aggression pact or political alignment of some sort with the Soviet East. This United Europe will then consolidate its gains…”
The Plain Truth, May 1962, p.9: “With all eyes on COMMUNISM, and its threat to the peace of the world, a little-recognized new threat is rising up in Western Europe!”
The Plain Truth, May 1962, p. 45: “And how about the West, which has succored and supported the Germans so long? How about NATO and the string of other pacts which bind West Germany to the West? Dr. Mende [then leader of German Free Democratic Party] doesn’t say it in so many words. But what he implies is quite clear. The West can go to the devil … Germany wants (1) reunification of East and West Germany, (2) the recovery of the Eastern territories lost after the war, (3) security from being attacked from the East, and (4) more trade! The Germans well realize that only the Russians can offer a united Germany. The reunification of Germany is only possible through an agreement of some kind with Russia.”
The Plain Truth, November 1962, p.9: “Forming … is the great power in Europe we foretold years ago … the coming United States of Europe—foretold in these pages when the … world scoffed!”
Ibid., P-10: “Just as certainly as we restore Western Europe to economic prosperity, and then to military power, a successor to Hitler will emerge, gain control of this power through a ‘United States of Europe,’ which we [the United States government] are also encouraging, and we shall then wake up, too late, to realize we have restored our fascist enemy the power to destroy us! … battlefields are becoming economic, just as we said they would … the movement is … forming toward complete political solidification!”
The Plain Truth, November 1962, p.21: “Listen, now, to some of the most shocking news releases of recent times!
“ONLY THOSE DEAF TO THE SOUND OF HISTORY can fail to be excited by the French-German rapprochement and the steady movement toward the ‘making of Europe’…Historically, political union over so great a space came only from conquest or from the spread of a common culture. Where, in modern times, Napoleon, Bizmark, Hitler and Stalin failed, reason and mutual necessity are succeeding. A European political union would mean little if the ultimate power of deciding whether it fights—and dies—is going to rest with the Americans.”
Ibid,. p. 22: “In recent address at Harvard University, Professor Walter Halistein, President of the European Economic Community, said … the … Market is … highly political. He considers it the substructure for a hoped-for United States of Europe. He said, ‘I want to stress that … it is political, not just that it tends toward a political goal.’”
The Plain Truth, January 1963, p.5: “Daring new plans for monetary reform and economic planning are on the drawing boards. These will so inextricably mesh the economies of the Six, reports Time, that they will ‘clear the way for the final goal of a POLITICALLY UNITED EUROPE.’”
Ibid., P.28, 29: “So Germany—not atheistic, communist Russia—is ultimately going to support an Arab union against the Jews and against Israel—Britain and America! This is what prophecy foretells!”

You would be amazed, if you could see with your own eyes the … New Germany … Only a few short years ago, in the … recent memory or so many of us, Germany was a … beaten nation … cities in twisted, wasted rubble! Yet in just an amazingly short time, West Germany now challenges even the gigantic industrial power of the United States in most world markets!”

But—should any severe threat to that hard-won prosperity come—the picture will change … VIOLENTLY in Germany … your Bible predicts a great TRADE WAR between the economic power in Europe and the United States. It predicts terrible financial collapse of this country … Germany … would not escape unscathed in a hot trade war between the Common Market and the United States. Terrible economic disasters would result … and … a new Nazi Germany! “

The Plain Truth, August 1964, p.3: “Now the spectre of a united Europe is suddenly looming up … the United States is oblivious to this new threat to its power. When will we wake up and realize that what is shaping up in Europe is the revival of Fascism under the cloak of European unity?”

Tidings from Poland and East Germany reveal widespread dissatisfaction with Communism.”
The Plain Truth, December 1964, p. 16: “…God shows that in this end time He is going to use the modern Assyrians … the Germans—to dominate a United Europe.”
The Plain Truth, April 1965, p.19: “In spite of Mr. Churchill’s farsightedness, [written just after Churchill’s death] he could not see far enough into the future to visualize the outcome of a United States of Europe. He did not know from Bible prophecy that it would be comprised of ten nations, dominated politically by a Roman-Fascist-like system and religiously by a great universal, militant church. He could not foresee that this great politico-religio-economic power bloc of ten nations not only would refuse Britain membership [in the final United States of Europe—the ten], but would ultimately prove the undoing of the Anglo-Saxon people of America, Britain, and the Commonwealth countries.”
The Plain Truth, June 1965, p.8: “Germany already is the strongest nation in Europe. Under the aegis of religion it will dominate a coming United States of Europe (comprised of, not six, but ten nations; Revelation 17). They will ultimately out-trade our nations [Britain and U.S.] … finally bring us to our knees in economic and military defeat…”
The Plain Truth, June 1965, p.42: “The real strength of Spain lies in EUROPE! For years we have said on the WORLD TOMORROW program [of which I was the voice for about twenty-five years] and predicted in these pages that a UNITED STATES OF EUROPE was coming!”
The Plain Truth, July 1965, p.27: “this ecclesiastically dominated European commercial power bloc will try to—and for a short time will succeed in—dominating the entire Western world!”
The Plain Truth, September 1965, p. II: “…Germany is once again going to rally around a ‘strong man.’ But this time as part of a United States of Europe.”
The Plain Truth, September 1965, p.29: : “…one thing we can know. Neither the Germans nor Europe in general will wait forever. Soon, now, the German masses—and all Europe—are again going to be carried off their feet and delightfully persuaded to follow the man of the hour—to lead Germany and Central Europe into a new ‘glorious golden age.”‘
The Plain Truth, October 1965, p.7: “GERMANY TODAY PRODUCES ONE-FIFTH OF ALL THE WORLD’S GOODS. But at the same time, the Germans are becoming increasingly bitter as vacillating allies and their own bickering democracy push reunification of their country further out of reach.”
The Plain Truth, December 1965, p.17: “German ambitions are revealed in a new book written by…Strauss entitled The Grand Design … Strauss proposes a United States of Europe … and equal NUCLEAR FORCE!”
The Plain Truth, March 1967, p. 15: “To the Germans this [increased trade with Communist bloc countries] is the first major step in changing the status quo of Communist Europe. By establishing trade and political ties with the Russian satellites, West Germany is weakening the Communist bloc.”
Ibid., p.26: “By uniting Europe first, then the two Germanys second, the Germans will outsmart the Russians. And the Americans, to their consternation, will find themselves totally unable to control Germany any longer! The whole world will stand aghast when this finally happens!”
The Plain Truth, May 1967, p.4: “Second to building up a strong Germany, Adenauer’s efforts [written upon his death] were dedicated to the establishment of a United Roman Europe—a union of Germany with those lands once within the confines of the Roman Empire.”
The Plain Truth, September 1967: “A coming United Europe is going to astound this whole world … but the new 10-nation revival of the old Roman Empire will not be a force of peace.”
The Plain Truth, October 1967: “…the memory of the unity and strength of the Roman Empire has begun to fire the imagination of Europeans. A ten-nation united Western Europe with its … influence reaching around the world is prophesied to become the vital center of world trade and political-religious affairs. Rome is destined … to play a
most important role in the political and religious future of Europe and the whole world…”
The Plain Truth, August 1968, p.42: “The ]7th chapter of Revelation plainly describes a spiritual-political union of TEN KINGS, ten military/political leaders, and a great spiritual leader. For decades … (we) have been proclaiming the eventual creation of some form of united Europe … we have proclaimed repeatedly that the ultimate unifying force would be religious.”
The Plain Truth, September 1968, article titled “The United States of Europe Coming Soon?”: “To find Europe becoming a totally integrated political power; to find Eastern European nations emerging in full industrial, economic, and eventual political union would be met with shouts of joy and exuberance in Western Europe. It would mean an end to the hated wall—an end of a tense, seemingly endless Cold War .. and an end to [then] Walter Ulbricht’s Communist regime in East Germany.”
The Plain Truth, October 1968. I had just returned from Munich and Bonn, and interviews with head of the Christian Socialist Union of West Germany, Franz J. Strauss. Quoting him, I wrote on page 6: “One of our major conditions is that the desire for admission to the Common Market is not based upon the motivation to impede political integration. We want … members who are ready and prepared to join us on the way toward a political integration with the long-run goal of the United States of Europe.” Later he was quoted, “I believe the Europeans should take more responsibility for their defense…” The article pointed out how Strauss had been a fierce advocate for a united Europe with its own nuclear weapons.
Ibid., p.42: Strauss was quoted: “…I see as the only chance … that of building up a Europe—integrating the Federal Republic of Germany into that Europe and building bridges from an attractive, economically powerful, political and influential Europe which can defend herself—including a nuclear potential—to add to the power of the Europeans.”
During the seventies, many, many more articles were written, but space does not permit including them all. We now come to the late 1970s, when I had been forced to begin anew, about a year after the incorporation of The Church of God, International. The same message continued to be published.
Twentieth Century WATCH magazine, first edition, Summer 1979: Under the cover article showing a West German tank firing a missile, and titled, “A Monster Stirs; West German Military Power Increasing,” I wrote, “Hitler imagined a ‘Thousand-year Reich’ with himself … at the pinnacle of power, and dreamed of a millennial reign of ‘German Supermen’ over the world, as if he applied these prophecies [of a coming “Messiah”] to himself. This new leader of a united Europe, who will probably be a German, will attempt to fulfill the very same dream, proclaiming himself a great leader over the other 10 ‘kings’ (in today’s terminology, they could be presidents, premiers, prime ministers, etc.) and so wield power over a 10-nation combine, which will be the greatest power bloc the world has ever seen.”
Twentieth Century WATCH, Winter 1984: Cover story pictured Berlin Wall with East German border guards; lead article, “Will Germany Reunite?” I wrote, “A West German official recently said, ‘I get mad when Americans and others dismiss it [German reunification] as an impossible dream.’ Said a 42-year old engineer in Munich, ‘Why can’t we be like others, proud of who we are, without everyone calling it New German nationalism?”‘ On page 29, I wrote, “There may be no such thing as the remotest dream [in 1984], in the mind of a living German, that a reunited Germany, at the head of a future United States of Europe, could ever conquer the United States of America. But, even as many Germans understand, the current world situation is not the last chapter, either in European history, or in American history. The future will too soon be upon us.”
Twentieth Century WATCH, July/August 1988: Under cover story, “Superpowers in Decline; How ‘Glasnost’ and ‘Perestroika’ presage a ‘United States of Europe,”‘ I wrote, “Today, Eastern Europe is in ferment … for decades, I have been proclaiming the eventual creation of a United States of Europe … specifically, that several Eastern European countries would eventually come out from behind the Iron Curtain, joining this new supranational power bloc. I was saying this over television and radio, and before large audiences numbering into the many thousands … during the … Cold War; during the Kennedy era … I wrote, and preached for years, that Russia and the United States would NOT go to war; that a new and unexpected enemy would emerge from the ashes of defeat; that Germany would reunite and lead European unification! How could I have known, [written July, 19881 that Eastern European nations would come out from behind the Iron Curtain; link themselves, first economically, and then politically and militarily with Western Europe?”
Sermon Transcript, July 12, 1980: “…notice one foot [of Nebuchadnezzar’s image] is planted here and a foot is planted there. There are five toes on each. I speculate that might mean … a … Europe of five nations on the Eastern side, including the reunification of Germany… and five nations on the Westerly side…”
Sermon Transcript, Tyler, Texas, May 22, 1982: “…we may see a strange alliance between the Soviet Union and Western Europe … an alliance of nations including Germany, and a ‘United States of Europe.”‘
Sermon Transcript, April 25,1987: “Many of you in this room have heard me saying that the prelude to World War III is going to be the collapse of the present day world economy, followed by the emergence of despots, dictatorships, and ultra-nationalists governments in countries all over the world, especially (in) Germany. The reunification of Germany in the context of a unified Europe and the creation of a ten nation central bloc … will become the United States of Europe, and challenge the United States of America.”
Sermon Transcript, Charleston, South Carolina, May 16, 1987: “…some understand that Adolf Hitler was trying to put together the dream of German geo-politicians like Haushofer and Makinder … to create in the heartland of Europe … a United States of Europe, a vast trading combine which would embody all of those industrial…
inventive…people from the Urals to the Atlantic … the Poles, Czechs … the Germans and … East Germany … Adolf Hitler was nothing more than a weak revival of a prophesied seven resurrections of (the) … Roman Empire which was predicted to exist … until the time of the Second Coming of Christ … 10 kings are going to fight Christ at His coming…”
Sermon Transcript, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, June 18, 1988: “My son reminded me that when he was a little boy, right at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, I was saying before many live audiences and repeatedly on television and radio to millions … that the Soviet Union and the United States would not go to war. How could I have known that in 1963, ’64, ’65-how could I have known that in 1958? … How could I have been saying back in those years that a United States of Europe is going to become a super-giant, a third power bloc in the world; and that it will include major Eastern European nations? … I believe that the Japanese empire is once again going to emerge as a super giant of nuclear and conventional technology; is going to put to sea an ultra-modern, super powerful navy … and we are going to see a bizarre repetition of .. events that took place just prior to World War II.”
Sermon Transcript, Chicago, Illinois, July 16, 1988: “Some people in this audience were there in … Texas in the early 1960s and late 1950s when I talked about a coming United States of Europe and said … it will include nations now behind the Iron Curtain … I have never failed for twenty-five solid years to continually hammer home that theme!”
There are many, many more quotations I could include; hundreds of them. But surely these are sufficient.
The instant I heard of the sudden opening of the Berlin Wall, I made arrangements to travel to West Germany with two of my three sons, Mark and David, taking along a professional video camera and our still cameras; obtaining footage for a couple of special television programs, and the pictures on the cover, and accompanying this decade-ending issue of’ WATCH magazine. It is possible I shall return to Germany soon, especially if reunification is announced. For if and when it is, the excited celebration we witnessed in Berlin will pale in comparison, as EIGHTY MILLION Germans will take to their streets in an outpouring of excited emotion not seen since the days of the pinnacle of Nazi power under Hitler.
