Roughly eight in 10 Americans want to maintain or increase funding to police departments, according to the results of a recent poll conducted for the National Sheriff’s Association.

The survey data shows that 53% of respondents support boosting funding, 26% support maintaining current funding, and 11% favor reducing funding.

Research firm Technometrica Market Technology conducted the survey from May 31 to June 3. The death of George Floyd, which prompted national protests, occurred on May 25.

“This poll makes it clear that the American people are supportive of funding local sheriffs’ offices to keep people safe,” said Jonathan Thompson, head of the National Sheriff’s Association. “Sheriffs must continue to build public trust and the validity of law enforcement. Each of us must provide leadership and partnership with our citizens of color. We hold solemn our commitment to listening, learning, healing, and action.”
