Israel will reimpose lockdown measures in response to growing cases of the coronavirus.

The nation has to reverse course to avoid a broader shutdown that could paralyze its economy, said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel lifted its initial lockdown measures in early May.

Restaurants will be limited to seating 30 customers outside and 20 inside, and organized sporting events can be held but must do so without fans. Synagogues are restricted to no more than 19 congregants. Bars, clubs, event halls, gyms, and public pools will be closed.

Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, is also moving to increase the fine for not wearing a mask in public from 200 ($58 US) to 500 shekels ($145 US).

Israel has experienced large increases in COVID-19 cases over the last two days. Over 690 people tested positive on Monday, following 818 news cases on Sunday. The death toll has risen to 334. There are 12,359 active cases in Israel.
