Nine people died on Saturday after Typhoon Yagi made landfall in Vietnam before weakening into a tropical depression. The rest died in the floods and landslides that followed on Sunday and Monday, state media VN Express reported.

The water levels of several rivers in northern Vietnam were dangerously high.

A bus carrying 20 people was swept into a flooded stream by a landslide in mountainous Cao Bang province on Monday morning. State media said four bodies were recovered from the bus and one person was rescued alive. The others were still missing.

A historic storm that produced epic amounts of rainfall triggered devastating, widespread flooding across portions of the northwestern United States and British Columbia, Canada, last week. The storm displaced thousands of residents on both sides of the border with thousands still stranded almost a week later. The storm was also blamed for one death in the U.S. and four others in Canada and prompted multiple state of emergency declarations.

Search and rescuers in British Columbia continue to try and reach thousands of residents still stranded by a combination of landslides and roadway closures. An estimated 18,000 people remained stranded as of Thursday, according to The Guardian.

Several portions of Highway 1, the main route of the Trans-Canada Highway through British Columbia, remained closed on Friday due to washouts with no estimated time of reopening, according to DriveBC.

Canadian officials have described the flooding as a once-in-500-year event, also known as a 500-year flood. A 500-year flood is defined as a flood that has a 1 in 500 (0.2 percent) chance of occurrence in a given year.

The most prolific rainfall totals from last week’s event centered along the border between the U.S. and Canada and impacted northern Washington state and southern British Columbia. Nearly a foot (300 mm) of rainfall deluged the city of Hope, British Columbia, from the previous weekend into early last week. Double-digit rainfall totals were also observed in places such as Quinault, Washington.

Much of far southern British Columbia picked up widespread rainfall totals of 6-8 inches (150-200 mm) throughout the prolific event. Even Vancouver, Canada’s third-largest city, the country’s largest port and a major economic hub, recorded widespread rainfall on the order of 5 inches (125 mm) or more.

As of Wednesday, a number of inundated areas in both the U.S. and Canada had yet to see floodwaters fully recede even days after rainfall had ceased. Heavy rainfall also forced large swaths of land to give way and create disastrous, even deadly results.

The body of a woman was recovered from a mudslide near the town of Lillooet, British Columbia, on Tuesday. The mudslide, which buried a total of seven cars, forced rescue crews to work in a level of debris they had never encountered.

“It is a significant amount of debris. It makes it very difficult for our search crews. The mud is up to their waist. I can’t recall our team being involved in anything like this in the past,” David MacKenzie, the Pemberton District Search and Rescue manager, told The Associated Press.

Officials, especially those in British Columbia, are worried that the death toll will continue to climb as rescue, recovery and clean-up efforts continue.

“We expect to confirm even more fatalities in the coming days,” British Columbia Premier John Horgan said, according to Reuters.

On Saturday, British Columbia’s chief coroner, Lisa Lapoint, released a statement that confirmed an additional three bodies were recovered from the landslide near Lillooet. According to the Vancouver Sun, all three bodies were men who had previously been reported missing due to the landslide. One other person remains missing.

Members of the Canadian armed forces have been deployed to help thousands of residents who have been stranded since last Sunday, the BBC Reported. The troops will also help rebuild the devastated areas.

One man told the BBC that the scenes in the aftermath of the storm were like “Armageddon.”

On Wednesday, Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, declared a provincial state of emergency for British Columbia. According to a press release, the state of emergency was set forth to “mitigate impacts on transportation networks and the movement of essential goods” and to support response and recovery efforts.

Last week’s floods have caused major issues for transportation networks across portions of British Columbia. Every major route between the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, which includes Vancouver, and the interior of the province has been severed by flooding, washouts or landslides, according to the AP.

On Wednesday, two of Canada’s largest rail companies, Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. and Canadian National Railway Co. announced their tracks into Vancouver remained unusable, according to Reuters.

“Our focus is on clearing, repairing and reopening roads to connect the Interior and the North to the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, to get our supply chains moving,” said Rob Fleming, British Columbia’s minister of transportation and infrastructure.

The full economic ramifications of these floods and disruption to transit may not be fully realized for quite some time, adding yet another hurdle to an already-stressed supply chain.

The devastation of last week’s unprecedented flooding was also quickly felt by the agriculture industry of British Columbia. Although the town of Abbotsford, a significant farming community, was under an evacuation order on Tuesday, some farmers stayed behind in an attempt to rescue their livestock.

Dramatic footage of rescue efforts showed farmers and volunteers racing against the clock to pull cows out of rising water. Rescuers tied ropes around the necks of the cows and pulled them to safety, while some used their bare hands and others turned to jet skis.

Despite the best efforts of rescuers in the province, Provincial Agricultural Minister Lana Popham said that thousands of animals had died and others would have to be euthanized, according to Reuters.

Home to more than 1,200 farms, Abbotsford supplies half of the dairy, poultry and eggs consumed by those living and working in British Columbia, according to The Guardian.

As of Thursday, at least one death was attributed to the heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding in the United States. The body of a 59-year-old man was discovered on Wednesday near Everson, Washington. The man, identified as Jose Garcia, had been missing since Monday when his truck was swept away by floodwaters.

Evacuations and water rescues were conducted elsewhere in the state early last week. In one incident, the United States Coast Guard shared a video showing a harrowing rescue by helicopter of six adults and four children, including one baby, near the town of Forks, Washington. Farther north, flooding in Bellingham, Washington, left more than 500 residents displaced after the nearby Skagit River overflowed its banks.

AccuWeather forecasters say this major flooding event was a result of a phenomenon known as an atmospheric river. This particular atmospheric river setup is known colloquially as “the Pineapple Express” since the moisture extends back to Hawaii and the tropical Pacific.

According to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty, British Columbia will get a brief reprieve before unsettled weather returns.

“British Columbia will see a dry and milder period on Sunday and Monday before a storm can bring a dose of lighter rain and mountain snow on Tuesday,” Douty explained.

While this early-week storm may not be enough to significantly impact cleanup or lead to new flooding, there may be a more potent storm on the horizon, according to Douty.

“Though it is still expected to pale in comparison to what recently hit the province, a more significant storm can impact the region during the second half of this week,” Douty cautioned.

Iota left a trail of devastation in its wake as it tore across parts of Nicaragua and Honduras earlier this week. The storm made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane on Nicaragua’s northeastern coast late Monday, hitting almost exactly the same stretch of the Caribbean coast that was devastated by Hurricane Eta two weeks ago.

Nicaragua Vice President and first lady Rosario Murillo on Wednesday raised the nation’s death toll to 16. The victims were spread across the country, swept away by swollen rivers or buried in landslides.

Rescuers searched at the site of a landslide in northern Nicaragua, where the local government confirmed four deaths and neighbors spoke of at least 16.

On Wednesday, CD-SINAPRED, which is Nicaragua’s emergency management agency, tweeted footage of the area where the landslide occurred at Macizo de Peñas Blancas, a mountain in Matagalpa province.

There were seven confirmed dead at the mountain, and the search continued, Murillo said.

Nicaragua’s army said it was sending 100 rescuers to the site. Access was complicated by downed trees blocking roads.

Monsignor Rolando José Alvarez, the Roman Catholic bishop of Matagalpa, tweeted Wednesday that priests are being sent to the Macizo de Peñas Blancas.

“At this moment our priests are mobilizing to that area and we are making ourselves available to all who are affected,” he wrote, in a translated tweet.

Two days of torrential downpours have unleashed heavy flooding and landslides in southeast Brazil, killing at least 30 people, according to authorities.

Civil defense officials said another 17 individuals were listed as missing following the landslides and building collapses.

An additional 2,600 residents have been evacuated from their homes in the state of Minas Gerais, where regions have been devastated by the heavy rains.

Rescue workers in Minas Gerais used a break in the rains to try and clean up some of the damage following rain-triggered landslides.

Fatalities were reported in Belo Horizonte, the state’s capital and largest city, where a new record was set for the greatest amount of rainfall in a 24-hour period. Additional deaths were reported in the state’s interior areas.

The governor of Minas Gerais, Romeau Zema, will fly over the flooded area on Sunday to evaluate the damage.

More rain is expected in the area, as well as in other parts of Brazil including Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo.

The deadly floods came the same weekend that Brazilians were commemorating the deaths of 270 killed one year ago when a dam burst in the municipality of Brumadinho, also in Minas Geiras.

The ongoing rains have killed at least 100 people since last month, authorities have said.

Most of the victims lost their lives in landslides, while others drowned in swollen rivers and flash floods.

On Monday, more bodies were recovered from cold mud in West Pokot where a landslide on Saturday buried parts of Tamkal and Nyarkulian villages.

Area Senator Samuel Poghisio said at least 56 people died, while Governor John Lonyangapuo said 43 people were killed in the disaster.

In a press conference in Nairobi on Monday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the national government would verify the numbers.

In Kajiado, five members of a family died on Monday morning after their car was swept off as they crossed a flooded Ng’tataek bridge between Namanga and Bissil.

Kajiado Central sub-county police commander Daudi Ole Lornyokwe said the victims included a woman, her two children, and two men.

The deaths bring to more than 100 people killed since the short rains began last month.

Earlier this month, the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, citing figures from the Kenya Red Cross Society, said the rains had killed at least 48 people by November 8.

Matiang’i asked those living in low-lying areas in Murang’a Kiambu, Nyeri and Taita Taveta counties to take precaution because those places were prone to mudslides.

“We are urging people to move to safe grounds. Of course, it’s uncomfortable. But at this time we’d rather they feel funny but safe,” Matiang’i told reporters during a press conference at Wilson Airport.

He was accompanied by Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa and Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai.

Matiang’i said they were forced to turn back mid-air on their way to West Pokot.

He said they were traveling in two police helicopters but the pilots were advised the weather was too risky.

“We were forced to land in Eldoret. We had left Nairobi at 8 am but in Eldoret we were told it gets even worse in the afternoon. But we will try again tomorrow (Tuesday) morning,” he said.

Matiang’i said the Meteorological Department has warned the ongoing rains will continue until mid-December.

“Because of technology, these warnings are highly reliable and should not be ignored,” the CS said.

Mutyambai said police in North Rift had joined efforts to distribute food and non-food items like blankets and mattresses to victims in West Pokot.

“All county commissioners and police commissioners are on alert,” he said.

The heavy downpour has been attributed to the unusual warming of the Indian Ocean.

The phenomenon, called the Indian Ocean Dipole, happens nearly every 10 years, unleashing destructive rains and flooding across East Africa.

More than one million people have been displaced in Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Tanzania – but scientists say more misery is coming.

The Indian Ocean dipole, sometimes called the Indian El Niño, is an irregular change in the sea temperature in the western (near Kenya’s coast) and eastern (closer to Australia) areas of the Indian Ocean.

When the ocean around East Africa is far warmer than usual, there is higher evaporation and moist air flowing inwards into East African countries as heavy rains.

Scientists say this year the strength of the dipole is of a magnitude not seen in years, perhaps even decades.

More than 120 people were injured as many areas were hit by record amounts of rainfall and violent winds, according to national broadcaster NHK. Officials urged residents to be on alert with evacuation orders remaining for about 5.9 million people across 17 prefectures, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

The heavy rain destroyed river banks throughout Japan — most seriously the Chikuma River in Nagano prefecture, northwest of Tokyo. Houses were flooded in the area, with NHK showing footage of collapsed bridges and residents being rescued by helicopter from rooftops.

Typhoon Hagibis, the biggest storm to hit Japan in decades, had moved away from the island by Sunday morning. It has been downgraded to a tropical storm, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. At its peak, Hagibis was packing winds of up to 252 kilometers per hour.

More than 420,000 buildings across the country have lost electricity due to the typhoon, the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry said in a statement.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said a total of eight local governments, including Tokyo and Nagano, have requested assistance from the country’s Self-Defense Forces.

The government will send Ryota Takeda, chairman of the National Public Safety Commission, to Nagano prefecture and Land Minister Kazuyoshi Akaba to Saitama prefecture, Suga said.

Across Japan, more than 800 domestic flights had been cancelled for Sunday as of early morning, according to NHK.

The area around Tokyo worked to return to normal on Sunday morning.

Heavy rain and flood warnings were lifted, and subways and most train services in the region resumed operations, NHK said. Bullet-train service heading west from the capital also was restored, according to Central Japan Railway.

Tokyo Disneyland planned to resume operations at noon after closing on Saturday.

Rugby World Cup organisers decided to go ahead with three out of four games scheduled for Sunday, including a closely watched contest between Japan and Scotland.

The match between Canada and Namibia was called off amid safety concerns following torrential rains that caused flooding and landslides around the venue in northern Japan.
