BEIRUT – About 50,000 people fleeing conflict between Kurdish-Syrian forces and the last ISIS holdouts have taken shelter in recent weeks at an already overcrowded refugee camp in eastern Syria, the UN said.

It said in the past week alone 13,000 people, the majority of whom are women and children, have arrived at the Al-Hol camp at the border with Iraq, in the Syrian region of Hasake.

The UN denounced the grave humanitarian and sanitary conditions at the camp.

Some refugees at the camp are wives of jihadist fighters who were arrested by the Kurdish forces, as well as the wives’ children.

The UN cited sources that reported 84 people died attempting to reach the Al-Hol camp between December and now, two-thirds of whom were children under age five.
