Venezuela moves towards setting up a new Parliament

Caracas, Dec 12 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela is moving today towards setting up a new National Assembly (unicameral Parliament), in a scenario marked by the categorical triumph of the Great Patriotic Pole in the recent legislative elections.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) accredited the deputies elected last December 6, who will take office on January 5 to begin the 2021-2026 legislature, after five years of dominance by sectors of the extreme right in the legislative body.

The president of the CNE, Indira Alfonzo, urged parliamentarians to assume their positions with responsibility and to act on the basis of respect for the Constitution and state institutions.

‘Go therefore to legislate for the country, for the people, to build the forum for debate, dialogue, and political agreement,’ underlined the highest authority of the electoral power during the act of proclamation of the deputies, held simultaneously in all states from the country.

At the CNE’s Strategic Operations Center, Alfonzo highlighted the robustness of the electoral system, as well as the democratic vocation of the Venezuelan people, willing to settle political differences through voting despite difficulties and adverse conditions.

The alliance of the Great Patriotic Pole won 253 seats out of 277 in the National Assembly of Venezuela, in a process characterized by the participation of just over 30 percent of the 20 million 700 thousand Venezuelans summoned to the democratic exercise.

Likewise, the opposition group Acción Democrática reached 11 deputies, Avanzada Progresista and El Cambio three per capita, Primero Venezuela secured two seats, while the Independent Electoral Political Organization Committee and the Communist Party each secured one seat in the legislative body.

The elected parliamentarians at the national and regional levels were joined by three representing indigenous peoples, elected for the first time in history through the customs and traditions of indigenous communities in an event held in 10 states of the country.

‘The act of proclamation of the deputies to the new National Assembly is the starting point of the recovery cycle of the Venezuelan Parliament. We have a powerful legislative tool to open the paths of dialogue, consensus, and solutions,’ said the head of state, Nicolás Maduro.

At a press conference offered this week with international media, Maduro affirmed that in addition to the pressing issue of economic recovery, political dialogue will be Parliament’s priority when it is installed on January 5, 2021.
