Walmart warns that higher are prices coming soon due to tariffs

Walmart will have to start raising prices later this month due to the high cost of tariffs, executives said on Thursday, even as the retailing giant’s U.S. comparable sales surpassed expectations in the first quarter.

Shares of the Bentonville, Arkansas-based company rose 2% in pre-market trading. Its stock is up more than 60% over the past year.

Walmart became the latest to avoid giving second-quarter profit guidance on May 15 due to the uncertainty around Donald Trump‘s tariffs that have roiled world trade.

U.S. shoppers will start to see prices rise at the end of May and certainly in June, Walmart’s Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said in a CNBC interview.

“We will do our best to keep our prices as low as possible but given the magnitude of the tariffs, even at the reduced levels announced this week, we aren’t able to absorb all the pressure given the reality of narrow retail margins,” CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement.
