The earthquake struck off the Wellington coast.

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake stuck near Wellington at 11.28pm on Sunday night, nearly a year to the day that a 7.8 earthquake hit Kaikōura.

The Sunday night earthquake was 45 kilometres deep. GeoNet reported the shake was 30km west of the capital, after initially reporting it was 20km west.

It was widely felt, with more than 11,200 “felt it” reports made to GeoNet within 20 minutes.

Many on social media said the quake felt bigger than it was, noting the eerie timing, just two days before the first anniversary of the destructive November 14 Kaikōura earthquake, which also rattled Wellington.
