About 8,000 migrants arrived in Spain in September, breaking a monthly record for this year. The number of tragedies at sea is also rising.
At least 27,136 migrants have arrived by sea so far this year in Spain, according to the most recent figures from the country’s interior ministry. Of these, about 8,000 landed in the month of September alone, a 2021 record that surpassed the previous record set in August, when about 3,700 migrants arrived. The landings in September make up nearly 30% of the total for this year so far.
Increased arrivals in Balearic Islands and southeastern Peninsular Spain
In recent weeks, migrant arrivals have increased on the Balearic Islands and in the southeastern area of Peninsular Spain. This is in addition to arrivals on the Canary Islands, which was the arrival point for nearly half of all migrants by sea.
The migrants departed mainly from the coasts of Algeria, according to experts in migrant flows to Spain.
It’s not uncommon for these routes to experience tragedies at sea. Two weeks ago, for example, at least eight bodies were found on the coasts of Almeria, including that of a child.
On Monday October 4, the prefecture of the Balearic Islands said it was notified of a possible shipwreck, and investigations are underway to determine whether there are people missing.
In addition to migrants who arrived by sea, at least 1,500 undocumented migrants have come through land borders in Ceuta and Melilla, Spanish enclaves located in Morocco, not including the approximately 10,000 undocumented migrants who arrived in Ceuta en masse in a chaotic 48-hour period in May.
