This move signals a significant expansion of OpenAI’s ecosystem and could reshape how users interact with the web. Instead of relying on traditional navigation, users will interact through a conversational interface similar to ChatGPT, allowing them to ask questions, perform tasks, and conduct research directly within the browser.
With ChatGPT boasting 400–500 million weekly active users, OpenAI’s browser could potentially capture a significant share of the market if adopted by its existing user base and may exert pressure on the browsing giant Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) ad money. Chrome is a cornerstone of Google’s ad business, and a successful OpenAI browser could strain this revenue stream, that constitutes nearly 75% of Alphabet’s total income.
