CAIRO (AP) — Sudanese paramilitary forces seized a key military base in the army’s last stronghold in the western Darfur region, activists and aid groups said Monday, a significant blow in the war that has gripped the country since 2023. Medical groups reported dozens of civilians killed.
Over a quarter-million people — half of them children — have become trapped in el-Fasher, North Darfur’s provincial capital, where desperate fighting has raged for over a year. The fall of the city to the Rapid Support Forces could herald another split of Sudan, more than a decade after South Sudan’s creation.
The war started in April 2023 when tension between the military and the paramilitary RSF exploded into fighting in the capital, Khartoum, and elsewhere in the northeastern African country.
