Syria’s Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani is due to arrive in Washington D.C. on Thursday for his first official trip to the US capital since the fall of former president Bashar al-Assad in December last year. Talks between the top Syrian diplomat and local lawmakers will be focused on the lifting of remaining US sanctions.
Syria‘s foreign minister is heading to Washington on Thursday, a foreign ministry source told AFP, in the first such visit in more than 25 years.
“Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shibani will travel to Washington to discuss the lifting of the remaining sanctions,” the source said, requesting anonymity as they were not allowed to brief the media.
