The coronavirus poses such a great risk that it could mark the end of the EU if it is mismanaged, warned the pope yesterday in his Easter speech.

Europe was “faced with a historic challenge, on which not only its future but that of the whole world will depend,” said the 83-year-old Pope in his blessing.

The message was delivered to St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican to a dozen invited members of the congregation, in accordance with the lock rules. Normally, the message would be read from a balcony overlooking Saint-Pierre Square at the end of an open-air mass attended by tens of thousands of people.

The Pope urged political leaders to show solidarity and concern for the common good, paying particular attention to needs.
